Zoren stepped onto the dock and looked enquiringly around. It was his first time setting foot in Horteka, and he could see why he had never come here before. The people were primitive and their capitol was more like a forest than an actual city.

“Remind me why we came here?” Edward was a fresh new crew member of Valuan origin. He had been a street thug in Lower Valua before Zoren had pulled him out of the situation. Zoren had need for some toughness and Ed fit nicely.

“You oughta know better than most how much the Valuan nobles love their gold.” Zoren briefly settled his hand on the handle of his pistol, to make sure it was actually there. “Ixa Taka apparently saw fit to make suits of armor out of gold. I imagine the nobles will die of happiness when they see their two favorite things crossed. Gold and slaughter.”

Elias was also a new recruit into Zoren’s crew, hailing from Esperanza, Zoren’s hometown. His navigation skills were highly sought after, especially his black rift navigation skills. Zoren’s paranoia had never completely died down after being hunted by a black pirate ring until their demise at the hands of the Valuan navy. The black fleet had sacked his base before he had even known it existed. A couple of idiots had revealed the existence and/or location of Eidolon after getting liquored or sexed up. With each passing day the possibility of Eidolon being revisited by the black fleet or some other clandestine operation became less remote. The base was well defended, but if something like that came knocking, there would be no returning. He would have to hide out in the dark rift for safety, and that was where Elias came in.

Zoren himself only carried a pistol and Elias carried a revolver. Edward had knives, brass knuckles, and a couple of semi-automatic pistols all hidden on his body. On jobs where violence was expected, Edward carried a modified Valuan lance rifle. No trouble was expected today, just a deal with an old armor merchant. “Let’s go.” Zoren released his hold on his pistol and they strode into the city.

“What do you want?”

“All your armor, it is made of gold, yes?” Zoren stood before the merchant, who sat on a intricately woven rug.

“Some of it.”

“I will take everything that is made of gold.”

The merchant raised an eyebrow quizzically. He could never quite understand white man’s fascination with gold. “There is not much, only five suits of armor and a couple of ritualistic daggers.” He bowed his head submissively, as if expecting Zoren to start a fight. “We are not a large operation and gold is too malleable to actually be considered for real suits of armor. We use our time to work on suits of armor that will protect the wearer, see?” And he pointed at a restored suit of Valuan armor.

Zoren had been hoping for at least twenty suits of armor, possibly even more. They were going to have to find something else in Ixa Taka worth taking to Valua, otherwise this journey would have lost him money. “How much?”

“25,000 gold.” The merchant continued to look at Zoren’s boots.

“Pay him.” Zoren turned to Elias, who immediately swung his knapsack off his shoulders and pulled a cloth bag full of gold pieces out. He swiftly but unhurriedly counted out an equivalent amount for the value. “My men will be by later today to retrieve what has been bought. If anything is missing…” Zoren paused for a moment before ending simply. “Things will go poorly for you.”

What else was he going to buy? Did he need to buy anything else? He could probably turn around and auction each suit of armor for at least 10,000 each if he found the right buyers. “Can I interest you in a handmade carpet for your sweetie at home?” Another aging merchant cut across Zoren’s thoughts.

“What do you think Elias?” Zoren appraised the carpets, they looked halfway decent.

“They certainly aren’t from Nasr, but they have a nice look to them…” Elias squinted his eyes behind his glasses, trying to see them as a Valuan nobleman would.

“Don’t you want to hear what I think?” Edward looked slightly put off.

“You aren’t paid to think, you’re paid to bash people’s skulls in if they make me mad.” Zoren’s voice came across harshly before relenting at Ed’s look. “Fine, what do you think?”

“Totally buy them. They’re nice.”

“Anything else?” Zoren had been expecting a bit more.

“Nope…” Edward looked at them again. “Oh, and I want that one.”

“You can have it.” Zoren appraised the rugs again and finally nodded his head, as if deciding. “We’ll take them all.”

“ALL?” The merchant’s eyes bugged out momentarily before he regained composure. “Very well, that’ll be 50,000 for the entire stock.”

It was Zoren’s turn to go bug eyed. “How many carpets is that?”

“About 100.”

Zoren turned enquiringly at Elias for a second. “That is about 500 gold per carpet, sir.” Was what he got.

“I’ll pay you 20,000 for the lot.”

“I’ll take no less than 40,000.” The merchant crossed his arms.

“Would you like me to bash his head in sir?” Edward asked hopefully, causing the merchant to swiftly draw back in fear.

“35,000.” Zoren ignored Edward.

“DONE!” The merchant quickly spit on his hand and extended it, Zoren did the same.

“Pleasure to do business with you. My men will be by shortly. And just so you don’t try anything…” Zoren withdrew Protos from his bag and briefly spoke with it in a quiet voice. It hovered just out of reach of the shopkeeper and began running a simple pattern. “Don’t do anything stupid and you don’t have to worry about that thing.” Zoren pointed warningly at Protos and then turned to leave, it already felt as if it had been a long day...

“I… I guess this is it, then...”

Jel’din swallowed, finding her eyes were being drawn downward to the timbers of the Horteka dockside – or to the nearby trees, or to a ship docking on one of the lower levels of the harbour – casting her gaze anywhere but toward the boat she’d just gotten off from, and at anyone other then the friend standing just in front of her. Yes, she’d known all along that they’d be parting ways here… but Jel’din had never expected it to feel so final, as if an era of her life was coming to a crashing and deliberate end.

Kokyrie and Ada were already far away, both busy with the business of the Ixa’ness village, and wherever Hannah had gotten herself to these days was something Jel wouldn’t even begin to speculate about. Even though the Viper itself was long since sunk – blown to matchwood on a far off sky beneath a strange Blue moon – it felt to Jel as if here, today, was where her part in the Viper’s story was finally coming to a close.

She sniffed, and shuffled her feet a little upon the hardwood plank...

“Jel! Stop moping already, wouldya?” the chirpy voice of Nixie sounded in front of her, the young pirate rolling her eyes at her friend’s display. “We already did this back at Ixa’ness, remember?” she laughed, giving the healer a gentle nudge with her elbow. “Too much sap to go through it again!”

“Yeah; I’ll miss you, and you’ll miss me… but it’s only gonna be a month or so in Ixa’ness whilst things are sorted out, then I’ll be out on the skies again, catching up with you. ‘Specially if ‘Kyrie gets me that ship she promised!”

Running one finger along the underside of her eyelid, Jel’din gave another sniff and looked up at Nixie. “I hope…” she began, before cutting herself short with a quick swallow. “…I mean, I know she will, Nix. You’ll make a great Captain.”

The young Ixa’ness flashed a toothy grin. “Got to get the ship first, though! And Kyrie’s gonna keep me busy with her Chieftain-stuff untill then; you might even have more excitement chasing up those rumours, y’know?” Nixie tried to give a mock-gasp of horror, but couldn’t quite hide a smile.

Jel sniffed, but she didn’t seem to be moping anymore, and small smile of her own had surfaced from the glumness. “I doubt it, Nix… there might be nothing there to find any more, and even if there is it mightn’t be anything useful.” she shrugged her shoulders. “But; I don’t think I’d want to find much excitement, in any case.” She added sheepishly. “Excitement would...um… mean that something went wrong…”

“Then I’ll be heading up rescue you soon as I get a good ship, won’t I?” grinned Nixie. “Keep an eye and ear out for the Wildcat, y’hear?”

“I will, Nix…”

The two hugged quickly, then Nixie stepped back onto her boat. Jel waved as her friend cast away from the harbour, and was still waving half an hour later when Nixie’s boat finally vanished from sight, leaving nothing to see but open sky and the forested islands.

Lowering her hand to her side, Jel turned around slowly, her head held high this time, to get her first good view of the port of Horteka.
