As Marcus’ rapier struck his adversary, Vadik twisted to meet it with his back; the sharp tip of the blade slicing through clothing and across his flesh, slashing through layers of Vadik’s skin and tearing bloody lesions upon the man’s back. The yellow energy discharged from the blade and coursed into Vadik’s body with an electrical crackle, causing Vadik to scream with pain, and to drop to his knees and fall upon the hilt of his sand-buried sword for support. Marcus glowered down at the pain-wracked figure in front of him, panting harshly as he did so, his own body now feeling uncomfortably dry and hot from all this exertion. If Vadik’s plan had been to tire them both out so one of them would die in the sands then he seemed to have accomplished his goal; right now Marcus felt parched and desperately needed a drink to sooth his aching throat, assuming there was even any water left within the wreckage; and assuming Vadik hadn’t already found and/or drunk it all. But before he went to go and scour the wreckage, Marcus realised, there was one more thing he needed to do. Vadik had attacked him irrationally and without warning; a shambling charge without any explanation or remorse. If the sun had addled his mind or if he had been on the edge of insanity ever since the crash itself, Marcus had know way of knowing; but he did know what had to be done. Vadik, in his current state of mind, was far too dangerous to him to be left alive. It was certainly regrettable – no officer of Valua truly deserved to be put down like some maddened beast – but if Vadik was left around, then Marcus was of no doubt that he would be attacked again… But before he could complete his self-justifications and carry out his plan, Vadik aptly demonstrated why the decision had been needed. Pulling his sword from the sand Vadik whirled about quickly, only for the sword to fly from Vadik’s grip and soar above his head almost before Marcus realised it was happening. But he reacted quickly; his own blade was still clenched in his hand as he stood above Vadik, and as the man fell onto his back, Marcus stabbed downward with a vicious thrust toward Vadik’s neck – just as the sound of a shot rang out below him, and Marcus felt a sudden, sharp, searing pain in his insides, and the sensation of warm blood seeping from somewhere it shouldn’t have been. But the pain didn’t stop the descending blade… |
