The fires burned, greedily devouring the old wood and the surrounding trees; if rain didn't come it would likely spread and take out a large portion of the surrounding jungle. None of that mattered to Jareth, though. His blue eyes stared at the rising column of yellow and orange flames, as if transfixed, but he did not see them; he coudn't see anything, really. He had avenged his cousin, avenged everyone Zanara had ever killed, but that too, didn't matter. No, all that mattered to him, as he writhed on the ground next to Zanara's corpse, was that he would not scream. He would not give this damned jungle and that damned woman the satisfaction of hearing him break, no matter how much it hurt. And it hurt a lot; his insides were on fire, he could feel blood or some other fluid boiling up in his throat, spilling over and into his lungs. Or maybe it was the other way around, fluid from his lungs; either way, it was getting hard to breath. The pain was growing, as well. In his last moments, Jareth was given a rare experience; that of knowing just how much pain a man can endure before succumbing to death's cold embrace. It wasn't a nice death, or a pleasant one, but in its peculiar way it was a good death; he had fulfilled his vengeance, appeased the memory of his cousin, and perhaps in doing so his old crew would look more fondly upon him, now that he had proven his valor once again. But none of that mattered, not when his stomach felt like it should explode and his veins were full of green fire. "Urgh," he grunted desperately, face contorted in concentration as he fought to bear the pain. I will not scream, he said to himself, over and over, while yet he could think. I will not scream, I will not scream, I will not-! Then the boiling sensation erupted, and a gout of blood and black-flecked fluids shot up his throat; it poured from his mouth in gasping hacks, taking what was left of his breath with it. Once that was left he couldn't get any back, because the fluids in his throat and lungs were clogging it all up. And as he struggled for breath, as his vision began to fade and his thoughts grow disconnected, he could yet feel his heart, beating furiously in his chest as if to make the most of its last few seconds. The human body could last a month without food, and three days without water, but only thirty seconds without air. Jareth wouldn't succumb to the pain or the poison; he would asphyxiate, starved of oxygen, green fire burning his veins; but none of that mattered to him in his last seconds. All that mattered, as vision faded and his brain shut down at last, was that he had not screamed. I didn't scream, was his last conscious thought; it was a grateful thought, an oddly peaceful thought for such a violent death. And as last thoughts go, one could certainly do worse. Then, nothing mattered at all. And all that was left of the epic struggle for vengeance and death was a pair of dead bodies, one with a sword through its chest and the other with blood and liquified guts on its chest. The fires, greedy and inconsiderate, spread gleefully, consuming everything. In twenty minutes the clearing would be so much charred rubble, hastened when the heat ignited the remaining bullets of Jareth's oversized gun. One day, perhaps, explorers would come, and find naught but a pistol ruined by intense heat, a once-fine sword, and a charred dagger coated in the remnants of vile alchemy, there in the middle of a blackened swath of jungle. Nothing would remain to explain how these items got there, or the ashy remains of those who had once wielded them in mortal combat; no historians would ever write of how this glade was burned, or who lost their lives there; this, perhaps, is as it should be. |

This round has ended and judgement will now begin. First, the judgement on fighting ability and style: Before I render my vote I'd just like to say that both competitors did extremely well in this round. The battle was very entertaining from start to finish and both characters fought very true to their abilities and personalities. That said naming a victor is very hard but I must nevertheless pick one over the other. Since you both did so well I'm going to base my judgement solely on a minor flaw I noticed. So on that note I'm voting for Sargoth. The only issue I had with Karl's performance was his character's tendency to see through Zanara's diversions. Any one of them wouldn't have been a big deal on their own but together they added up and left a smudge on an otherwise spotless record. Jareth's unwillingness to enter the barracks in search of Zanara was a wise move but his reaction to the object thrown through the window as a distraction made it look like he could read her thoughts. Knocking the same object out of midair a post later and then immediately spotting Zanara in the tall grass near the end only strengthened that impression. Those few points sorta limited Zanara's reactions and didn't give Sarg any solid openings to counterattack. They didn't have much of an actual influence on the outcome of the match but I thought that if Jareth had been distracted by the object tossed out the window or had been stunned by it when it was thrown at him it would have made for a more interesting exchange. Same deal if Zanara had ambushed him from her hiding place in the tall grass as he searched for her. So, that's my vote cast. Two yet remain. Edited by Jet Blackbeard, May 5 2009, 05:41 PM.

Secondly, judgement upon the roleplay skill displayed by the participants. Both participants were very good indeed, but overall I feel that Sargoth has the edge. From setting the scene at the very start of battle through to the description of sudden death at the battle's end, Sargoth's posts seemed to flow a little more conherently with one another, building up a descriptive narrative that took in each action of the battle as it came around and fleshed out the surounding enviornment in quite beautiful detail. Karl had descriptive triumphs of his own, most particularly his own final scene, but overall I feel that Sargoth was just that little bit abler. In many ways, after reading this though again (completely this time), I now wish that this match had been the final of this tournament rather then a mere round one event. I doubt that any subsequent pairing will be able to re-live the standards displayed by Karl and Sargoth here, and find it quite unfortunate that we have to loose one of them so early in the contest. |

Although the victor has already been decided, I'm going to post a full review and judgment of this fight. As rules are, by their very nature, ways to enforce and define an organized structure, I'm going to use a clear structure of organization to view these rules. First of all, there were no outstanding corruption or abuse of rules, so judging is not as simply pointing to the worst crime. Instead I'm going to look at the number of slight transgressions, or less-than-ideal treating of rules. Although most of this will be dealing with the slight, due to the quality and character of the posts and posters respectively, that's what this judgment comes down to. 1. Be Realistic Quite simply, I don't think that either party transgressed in this respect. There is little to discuss. The parties tied for this rule. 2. Auto-Hitting Looking down the thread, we see this fight begin with a clear miss on the part of Karl. Further, he clarifies that his attempts at stealth were no doubt in vain, then inflicts a painful burning wound on himself, and later yet willing receives a "mouthful of poisoned air." Karl, on the receiving end, was quite sure of not only meeting the rule of this law, but the spirit, playing the part of a good sport. Sargoth followed a similar pattern, although generally not to the same degree, with one clear exception: he turned Karl's declared miss into a clear 'hit': having the round's first shot causing Zanara to tumble in a fall that disoriented her, shocked her, and nearly broke her back. As far as actually giving an auto-hit, there wasn't much to note: as close as it comes is when Zanara casts the cloud of green magic all around Jareth. However, noting the freedom gained by the rules, I'd say this wasn't a transgression. Nevertheless, this rule seemed best held to by Karl. 3. No God-Modding There stands as only one point I really see god-modding (ignoring rule 4), and that is post #7 (#6, ignoring the starting post). Karl forces Zanara to charge Jareth. This seemed out of place, unnecessary, and simply crossing the line. Thus, this rule seemed best held by Sargoth. 4. No Instant Death As, I understand, both Instant-deaths were agreed upon by both parties, there is not much to discuss in this area. 5. Don’t Use Combos Like rule #3, this rule was largely held to, with only one clear exception:
Although Sargoth isn't 'hitting the enemy when he's down,' he does line up a series of attacks/preparations for attack in short order. As such, this rule seemed best held by Karl. 6. Respect your opponent’s abilities This mainly goes back to what Bear said. Jareth seemed to understand too much, too often the plans, strategy, and mind of his opponent. As strategy of the writer is a key part of working with the rules, this seemed to be paticularly worthy of note. As far as physical ability, both seemd rather equal. This rule seemed to be upheld the best by Sargoth. Now, for my overall view of the rules? I'm going to have to hand my vote to Sargoth. |
