Arek couldn't believe he was being sent down on this. His temper was seething as he was guided by the two more senior members of the guard down to through the lady Rebana's castle. The conversation with the guard captain was still in his mind.

"You can't be serious sir."

"I'm dead serious Arek! By all rights and our lords law you should be hanging from a noose for what you did to that nobleman. You may have had a little more leeway with executions in the camp but the man was here as a guest of her ladyship. What possible reason could you have for striking him like that?"

Arek took a deep breath, in his time here he had thought the lady Rebana's guards would be soft because of their living conditions, after his first day of conditioning he knew that was far from the truth and the captain was right. He could strike him down now with no questions asked and no one would have a reason to ask questions.

"The nobleman presumed that he had the right to treat me as one of his own retainers, he had no right to grab my arm. Let alone insult my heritage!"

The captains stare was like ice, something he was used to but even now it was hard to keep his hatred in check. He had no real reason to feel any towards the captain but right now he was having his honor and methods questioned not only by that arrogant nobleman but by his own commmander.

"Look Arek, obviously you need some training in etiquette and behavior around nobleman. Unfortunately I don't have the time to train you myself and after that display no one hear will be willing to. So I'm sending you in to see if Lady Rebana will oversee your training."

The threat was unspoken but they were both military men and knew what would happen if she refused. He would be sent to the slavers market if he was lucky, and more than likely the pits to die.

Suddenly the guards stopped at the lady's door. One of them opened the door so Arek could enter and explain why he was here.

"Greetings My lady, the captain sent me down here in order to learn how to deal with the guests you so often recieve."

He had kept his eyes downcast while speaking, not wanting to risk being sent to the pits to fight to the death. He knew only to act as if she was another officer, and in his experience officers hated when you spoke to them as equals. Many would take a mans head if he looked the officer in the eye without being told to.

Kimari didn't look up from where she sat reading the book, her back straight as she sat in the chair, her back just a few inches away from touching the back of the chair.

- "Good day, Arek. Your presence was expected."

In itself, the words were calm, yet they hinted at a thin sheet separating Arek from the ice that lay behind it. This incident had been sufficiently covered up though it was not easy, and it seemed her latest recruit would need to learn some manners, or quite literally die trying.

- "Do you know why you are here?"

She still didn't look up, simply waiting to see if he knew what he had done wrong. It would make things so much easier after all...

Arek was surprised that she knew he would be coming, after all the captain had just given him the order to come down. He raised his eyes so that he could at least get a better look at the woman he was talking with. Lady Rebana was not an imposing woman by anyone's standards, she stood a half a foot shorter than Arek was and even though he was of slim build she looked as if she would snap easily enough under his own muscle. In her chair she seemed to look even less threatening than one should for this sort of meeting. The only thing threatening was the tone in her voice, it sent a chill down his spine. Arek wasn't accustomed to feeling fear, it was something that he was supposed to be immune to from his training. He swallowed down the growing lump in his throat and did his best to muster up all the courage he could for this meeting.

"I am here because there are some that feel I overstepped my boundaries when dealing with your visitor."

There was no need to go over the whole of the matter, they both knew just what he had done and though he felt he had done nothing wrong there were those who felt otherwise. He didn't know why but he felt the urge to state his reasons for his actions, as if she would somehow accept them.

- "No, you are here because I feel you have overstepped your boundaries."

Gently, almost delicately, she placed a bookmark on the page she was reading, and placed the book on the table so softly hearing it would have taken an effort. She looked at him then, a look that spoke volumes as to his reasons for being here. A Captain may have ordered him here, but there was only one commanding the Captains, especially over matters involving her.

- "As you are no doubt aware by now, i place a lot of care in attentiveness, and i expect the same from my subordinates to some degree. Therefore, you will repeat the entire conversation you shared with my guest to me now, and we shall run by it afterward to touch on certain qualities that need improving. You may begin."

Her voice was still calm, but she was speaking much in the way a schoolteacher would speak to her students. Not angry, not agitated... yet it was clear that denial was not an option.

"No, you are here because I feel you have overstepped your boundaries."

Her tone sent a chill down his spine, he had no real allies down here to help protect him from anyone who wanted him dead. The only reason he still lived was that Lady Rebana hadn't seen fit to simply send him to the pits. Life was cheap here and his was currently hanging by a thread.

"Yes lady Rebana"

Her tone had strangely changed, it was something he had occasionally heard his mother use when she was trying to teach him something before he was given over to the army. That wasn't to say that it was a warm tone, but it wasn't one that promised imminent death either.

Arek recounted his conversation, mundane questions to entertain the man while he waited for an audience with lady Rebana, who he was, where he was from, how he liked living there.

"After that he asked who my mother was, when he found out he said that it was amazing anything resembling a human could of come out of 'that demon loving whore.' After that he put his hand on my shoulder and shoved me out of his way like I was a piece of refuse. At which point I struck him in the stomach."

The man was lucky he hadn't drawn his sword and gutted him for his comment. The insult against his mother was something that wasn't taken lightly anywhere and the man had no right to insult her so!

Kimari nodded, it matched the story the noble had given her. There were a few minor inconsistencies of course, as could be expected when two interpretations collided in such a brusque manner, but nothing that she did not consider nitpicking at details.

- "Indeed. Though he should not have tried to goad you to test your composure, your reaction was completely unwarranted. Had his injuries been permanent we would not be having this conversation right now, remember this."

- "Now, i shall indeed teach you the proper way of dealing with a guest. Before we start though, you will need to control that temper of yours. It is a good thing to have at times, but in the heat of battle a lack of composure will have you break the line. I feel some additional training on this would be in order, therefore you will report to your Captain to receive it. He has already been notified."

The training, Arek would soon notice, was poised on trying to lure him out with insults and humiliation, and beating him whenever he took the bait. Beaten in the stomach mostly, but never to the point where he would lose consciousness. He was not exempt from regular drills either, as this was considered supplemental training. There was a chance a soldier could break, but from the small hints they dropped it would be clear that that would disappoint the officers.

Arek stood there in silence. There wasn't much he could do at this point but hope that she wouldn't send him to the gallows, for all of his training he still feared death.

"Indeed. Though he should not have tried to goad you to test your composure, your reaction was completely unwarranted. Had his injuries been permanent we would not be having this conversation right now, remember this."

Arek sighed in relief, if she was going to kill him she wouldn't of given him this chance to explain himself. He was going to live for a while longer at least, that he could be grateful for.

Reporting back to the captain, it seemed a bit redundant to send him here and then back to the barracks but he wasn't going to question orders.

"By your leave, Lady Rebana"

Arek was tapped on the shoulder and noticed that a few servants had entered during the conversation at some point. He turned and followed them out of the room and followed two of the other guardsmen back to the barracks, he was curious to the nature of the training he would recieve. Would it be about controlling his temper or learning to channel it into something more constructive, for the first time in a long time Arek wished he could just walk out and strike down a slave to slate his rage.
