One of the most famous stories from the North Blue is the tale of Montblanc Norland, an explorer from Lyneel. Over 400 years ago Norland left to explore the Grand Line, traveling many places from Villa to Jaya. Upon his return home, he lied to everyone about his journey to Jaya and seeing the city of Gold. The king heard about the city of gold and out of greed tricked Norland to take him there again. Norland, tricked the king into going to Jaya only to find the city of gold was not there. Upon his return one of his crew claimed his captain did indeed lie and tricked the king - Norland was killed, his last words were "I hid it in the skulls right eye!"

Some 200 years ago the ship dubbed the St. Bliss left from the Bliss Kingdom carrying a crew towards the Grand Line. The crew reached Skypiea eventually on their journeys but something happened once there, and the entire crew was sent Cloud Drifting, likely for major crimes. 200 years later the St. Bliss fell back onto the Grand Line. The ship was a wreck, and many would assume a fight had broken out, which may have happened during cloud drifting. Nothing more is known as for sure fact except that the ship was cloud drifting. Also during this period, in a certain region of the South Blue it was once a custom to cover teeth with tar to help preserve them.

Until 20 years ago, Ohara Island held the Tree of Knowledge, a famous place where the books recording the events of history were held. Inside the tree, the world's best archaeologists resided, studying the events of history and making sure the words held in each book were not forgotten. It was their duty to protect and preserve the books and the record of time. 20 years ago they dared to do the unthinkable and began to study a period known as 'the blank chapter', a period of history roughly 800 years ago that the world government banned from researching. When word got out on what they were researching the island was ordered to be destroyed using the 'Buster Call'. During the Buster Call, some quick thinking on the archaeologists' part saved the books inside the tree from being lost. They threw them into the lake outside, safe from the fire of the buster call that tried to destroy them.

Logue Town, the city in the East Blue located closest to the Grand Line , was the birthplace of the late Pirate King, Gold Roger. Twenty two years ago, it also became the place where he was executed, and it was the words spoken by Roger just before his death that set off the Great Age of Pirates. It became a stopping place for pirates heading towards the Grand Line, as a nearby Lighthouse lit up the route towards Reverse Mountain, the entrance of the Grand Line. This ended when Captain Smoker was placed in charge of the town's Marines.

The Grand Line ("偉大なる海路", Gurando Rain, "Grand Sea Route") is an ocean where much of the story takes place in the anime and manga of One Piece. The Grand Line is the ocean current that follows an imaginary line that runs east to west across the middle of the world and perpendicular to the Red Line. In effect, it's the equator in the world of One Piece. The Red Line is a vast continent that circles the globe from north to south and functions as a Prime Meridian. These two Lines divide the two oceans of the world into four seas or Blues: North Blue, East Blue, West Blue, and South Blue. This stretch of ocean is said to be the most dangerous place in the world, and is sometimes referred to as the Pirates' Graveyard because of this reputation. Most believe that it is impossible to safely leave the Grand Line save at its beginning and end; however, the World Government regularly sends ships across the Calm Belts by coating their hulls with Seastone - this renders them invisible to the Sea Kings.
