"You know, it would have been a lot more convenient if you were to have told me that you were involved with all of this in the past." Mhuahaha said laughing as he placed his bag on the ground. "Hold on with that wall for a second." Mhuahaha opened his his bag and pulled out a piece of wood, a torch.

He placed the torch on the ground for a moment whilst he closed his bag and hoisted it on his back again. He picked up the torch again and lit it with a magic fireball. "Right, now we're ready. How about you tell me the whole story on the way down? I'll follow you."

Reid shrugged, and chuckled.

"That wouldn't be nearly as fun, now would it? I'll fill you in on the way down. But first..."

He placed his hand on the wall, and pushed hard. Around his hand, a large door shape opened in the soil, the light from the torch revealing a large chamber inside.

"...we should open the door. And I'm glad we got the right side, or I'd have looked pretty daft there. Shall we?"

He entered, closing the door behind Mhuahaha. In the corners of the room, braziers lit as he flicked his hands at them.

"Long time since I've been in here. Welcome to the first temple of Ares in Karmina. This way."

He led Mhuahaha over to a door at the back of the room, and opened it, unveiling a well-lit room with an altar to Ares.

"I put the passage in the one place they'd never think to look."

Reid was standing beside the altar as he spoke, grinning.

"Like to guess where?"

Mhuahaha nodded, the whole searching is part of the fun indeed. He followed his friend inside the temple.

The room was rather bleak, just stone and the braziers. As he expected, the temples of Ares never held many riches inside them. They were dispensable, no need to cling onto them for dear life when this to is dispensable in servitude of Ares. If he were to guess though, the rest of the stuff must have been moved. The outside stones show extensive water damage, however, the temple shows heavy signs of neglect even before this. It was probably abandoned before this area flooded and covered all in thick layers of clay.

"You want me to guess? Well, seeing as there isn't much here except for the altar you are standing next to, my best guess is that its hidden under there. Now, if I know you it's probably opened through the use of magics. However, if you wanted it to be still accesible to others, you would have probably placed a device inside the altar. A device activated through the pressing of a switch. A switch hidden in the altar itsself perhaps?"

"Very good, my friend. I'm impressed. Yes, it's right underneath here, with a magic seal attached. I can open it by magic. As for the more mundane way to open it, I simply enchanted a few objects - specifically objects used in the worship of Gae, which would only be in the possession of her priests - to trigger the seal."

He placed a hand on the altar, and a faint purple light shone from it briefly, before it slid back to reveal a staircase heading below the current floor. Magical torches burst into flame as the altar slid back, lighting the stairs.

"Now, there's somewhere I'd like to go first when we head in. As thanks for my leaving a way in - not that I particularly felt the need for thanks, I hasten to add - I was given by the priests a sacred relic of Gae, although they called her by the name of Giai. A most pleasant surprise, actually. Rather than take it with me, though, I left it in the vault of the temple. I wouldn't mind having it with me as we wander. No real reason, mind you. I'd just like to see it again. It's been centuries."

He spoke as they descended the stairs, and as he finished they arrived in a corridor leading left and right. He turned right, and continued as they followed the passage.

"I should probably be more clear. There was a temple to Gae on the then-surface, where we just were. It was, however, mostly for the casual worshippers. The everyday citizens who happened to want to offer some thanks. The true temple, where the services took place, is this. Buried under the earth. The surface temple was buried by the priests of Ares who ordered the temple we just entered via built. I say priests - they were rather zealous and bigoted. Regardless, they insisted he and he along should be worshipped, so they flattened her temple and built their own. They, however, didn't know about this temple. Many of the priests of Gae were killed by Ares' over-devout. The ones that survived were the ones I helped in allowing access to this place. I've been here a few times, but only as far as this level, except one time in the level below. It goes many deeper, but only the priests of Gae were allowed in. So this will be as new for me as it is for you! Left here."

The duo entered a large stone vault, with items lining the walls.

"By the by, any of these seem interesting to you?"

The spark of archaeological discovery surged through his heart a few times before jumping to his head, jolting his brain. The walls of the vault was literally littered with hundreds of items. Some were from gold, some from silver, some inbetween. Electrum he believed this mix was called. Platinum, mithril, all the precious metals known to the ancients were present there. Not only metal lined the walls of this vault. Various ceramic objects, a pot from the linearbandkeramik, objects wich he recognised as stamps or seals from Mesopotamia, beautifully made thin orange earthenware originating from the orinoco flow, a host of objects a collector covets. A collector would kill for these even, or let men be killed judging by the amount of money this person would have to posess to buy such an object.

Then his eyes had adjusted to all that glitters and he began to see even more. A host of clay tablets written in linear A and linear B writing. The linear B writing has thus far never been understood. These tablets could the key to deciphering this lettering. Then more precious materials such as ivory and bronze. A bronze kettle used in ancient times to holde mead. Beautifully carved wodden objects, probably oak.

Wood, there was a though. Worshippers of Gea, or Giai as they called her appearantly, they practicly woshipped the alter-earth. It would only be logical to asume that they thus respect alter-earthly matter like the ground we walk on. Relics precious to their religion would therefor logically also have been made from such materials. Thus he cast is eye on a plain stone pot. It was the only object off its kind in the room holding, the only thing holding no appearant sign of glamour or ordainment. It looked like nothing special. He walked closer to it, examening it's markings. Linear B, he can't read it.

"Reid, you have lived through this era, could you and can you still read the language this object's inscription is written in?" He pointed to the pot. "It of interest to me. You see, it is the only object of its kind in this vault. Though plain to the naked eye, much care must have gone into the making of that pot. It was made out of one solid stone, a tough stone judging by the dark colour it holds. Colour when it comes to stones holds some information. A dark stone is usually a very heavy one as well. These are tell tale signs that these stones were formed under high presurre, most likely part of the sea's floor long ago. Now, these solid stones are a nightmare to work on. Their toughness makes it very hard to carve out any shape you want. This object is beautifully shaped and flawlessly rounded off. I'd like to know what is writ on this stone."

OoC: I just threw in a host of items from across the world. Not Asia though. My knowledge of Asian archaeology is very limited. Most of my knowledge lies in Europe before the year 0. I prefer 900 AD and further back.

Ohh and I watched the last crusade today. "You've chose wisely."? It just dawned on me that this looks a bit like the grail scene off Indiana Jones and the last crusade.

OOC: So it is. Valuables, and one mundane.
IC:
Reid wandered over and looked at the pot for a moment. "Oh, of course. It was the script Gea's followers used all the time. Though it's a bit worn. Let me see now..." He concentrated on the symbols, before raising his eyebrows. "Ah, this is mine! They moved it. So where have they got theirs?"

He tailed off, before spotting Mhuahaha's questioning look. "Ah, sorry, I should explain. This and others like it are used, or were used, in the worship of Gea, in reverence of her, really. This particular one was the gift the priests gave me as thanks. I decided to keep it here, seeing as they might want to use it in worship. Plus, I didn't have my bag of holding back then, so it would have been rather an awkward thing to carry. Every priest had one. The inscription on the side of this one says 'To the Archsage, and the glory of Giai'. The others were just 'To the glory of Giai'. I suppose theirs are all in the deeper vaults."

OoC: A short one for me right now. Sometimes beauty must be sacrifised for progress.

BiC: Mhuahaha looked over at Reid while he walked off. He quickly grabbed the pot, it was indeed quite heavy as he had expcted it to be.

"I think we should take it with us. It is yours, so you should take it anyway. Besides, if you say this object were used in Gea's reverence, it might come in handy later."

He gave the pot to Reid and walked out of the vault. He paused, realising he had no clue as where to go next. Luckilly, reid followed right behind him.

OOC: Thought I'd replied to this o.0 Oh well.
IC:
Reid placed the pot in his bag, exited the vault behind Mhuahaha and started back the way they had come. "The other way just leads to a store cupboard for spare scrolls and whatnot," he explained, "and aside from a room where they really just socialised, that's all that's on this floor. I've been to this floor a lot. The next one is the chapel where they held the regular services. I've been there reasonably often too. The floor below that is for more important ones, and has another vault. I've been down there a few times, but no deeper. I know lower floors have a chapel or two for much more important services, and a few more vaults, but beyond that, not a clue."

They had arrived back at the stairs, and Reid led the way down toward the next floor. The chapel was a small affair, but then the priests of Gae were few. It would house them amply.

OoC: It took a while, but let's go.

BiC: Mhuahaha looked at the chapel and sighed, it was rather bleak and empty. It was just a stone room, square, with stone benches and a stand for some head priest. No relics, no clear architectual style, no inscriptions, no depictions of any sorts. Nothing to help him with his quest. He looked round and saw that next to the stair they had come from was another stairway down. "There is nothing interesting here my friend. Let's just head down further."

Mhuahaha and Reid continued further down, onto the next level. "It's a shame that I can't read the script in which the texts here are written. Not that it would have done me much good if I were to read what has been written on those clay tablets in the vault we visited. The one thing I could understand was that they were more legal documents of sorts. Symbols which resemble the linea A style symbols concerning property were used a lot. I'm afraid we have to go down."

The next floor held a corridor leading to the left and to the right. Mhuahaha headed to the left first, only to find the door leading into an empty vault. Discouraged, Mhuahaha and Reid backtracked and headed to the corridor to the right. This corridor headed into another chapel. This chapel was almost as bleach as the previous one, be it that the benches looked way more comfortable and there was more room up front. Mhuahaha could only guess that anything used in cermons must have been dragged from one of the vaults. Possibly the one now empty. "Well, I guess we need to go down once again."

And thus they headed towards the stairs again. Going down one more floor. "I do hope not all is as empty as what we've encountered so far. Do you perhaps know why this place was abandoned?" Then the pair reached the fourth floor down. A floor unlike any other. A floor with one massive, ornamented door.

"Morbid though it may be, I'd imagine it's just that they all died. Ares priests were still hunting them, you know."

They arrived at the door, and Reid smiled. "Ah, this door. I've been to that first chapel whenever I've been here. The one below if there was a festival of Giai. And through this door, is her true sanctum. You'll need to watch your step. I've been to the floor behind the door a few times, but below this floor, only once. That was when I was ceremoniously given the urn."

He placed his hand on the door, and muttered something. A click emanated from the door. He turned to Mhuahaha and grinned. "Seems she's willing to let us in. That door is locked, and only unlocks if Giai permits that you enter. I offered her a prayer there, saying who we were and asking if she would be so kind as to let us in. Clearly she has chosen to do so. Watch your step," he continued as he opened the door, "it's a long way down."

The door opened onto a vast square staircase. Up the middle of the room rose a gargantuan tree, the leaves spreading to the floors at the side. The room was full of light, though from no visible source. From the door to the opposite side of the room was a stone path, with doors on the wall alongside. The floor ran around the room to a staircase from the third corner, which ended beneath where they would step from entering. Glancing down the gap in the middle, there was no end visible, merely tree. There was also no banister to stop some poor unfortunate from falling.

"The light and the water for the tree is provided by Her grace. When it was planted, and by whom, not even I know, though I'm sure it's recorded somewhere here. These top two or three floors - I'm not counting the ones we just descended - were human only. Further down were kept creatures of earth, for some holy rituals I imagine. This is her true temple. The one on the surface was for anyone to worship in. The top chapel was for the priests and anyone with reasonable wealth or power to worship whenever, and the next for festivals. This is where true worship took place."

Mhuahaha knodded in acknowledgement. Death and genocide seemd a logical answer for the disappearance of the worshippers of Gea. How much could have been learned about Alter-Earth. Possibly, how much could be learned about how to go back to Earth itsself. Mhuahaha sighed thinking about it. A real shame these people died out as it were. Thus they encountered the door.

As Reid began to tell the story of this door, Mhuahaha kept continuously glancing at the doors beautifull appearance. The ornamentation consisted of inlaid gold branches, sweeping around the door's edge. The golden Branches branched off towards the middle, where a woman's head resided. That head must be of Gea, Mhuahaha thought to himself.

As Reid muttered, the door unlocked and exitement began to rise and fill up Mhuahaha's heart. This was it, the moment he has been waiting for. Entering the domain of Gea, finally getting the answers to his queste.

The door opened and when Mhuahaha looked at the sights beyond it, all his expectations were met. The old cracked grey stone's of walls and floor, their beauty only increased with time. The forrest air which ran through his nostrills as sweet as freshly baked bread on a sunday morning. A mysterious light filled the room, shining through the canopy. Another source appeared to be the tree itsself, which seemed to glow ever so slightly. Than we have the tree itsself. It's canopy completely covered the roof, many branches connected floors with the tree and on some occasions. He could see places where the branches and leaves replaced a piece of collapsed floor.

After a few second, Mhuahaha began to notice other things as well. Or rather, noticed thing not present. He could feel a slight breeze on his face, but there was no sound. Not the sound of birds chittering, not even the sound of leaves brushteling against eachother in the wind.

"Creatures you say? Hmm, I can hear no sounds what so ever. Except our own. I don't like that at all, I suggest we thread lightly. I asume some of the creatures are dangerous? How is it made sure that the creatures....hmm...could it be that the faint glow I see comming from the tree is in fact a barrier, keeping these top floors unaccesible from the creatures below?"

Mhuahaha pondered. This room has indeed so far raised more questions than it answered. As he paced around he saw a door a little bit up ahead. He stopped dead in his tracks, thought a little, walked towards the door and opened it. With the door only half open and the handle still in his right hand he turned to Reid. "Heh, I guess even you don't know all. Well, we'd need some more information for sure. These chambers seem like a good place to start." He then opened the door fully and entered the chamber.

"The creatures nearest the top were the most docile. Anything dangerous would be further down, though a few hundred years unchecked would be enough for them to ascend, I'd imagine. These floors were kept clear by Gae's will, backed up by strong gates, or so I was told. The one will still remain, of course, but the other could well have weakened with age."

Reid chuckled. "If I knew everything, where would the fun be? Though I can tell you that's the study of one of the priests."

He followed Mhuahaha inside the room. It was fairly basic, containing a bed, a table, and a couple of chairs, but it was the desk in the corner that Reid crossed to. As he opened a couple of drawers and rummaging, he explained, "If we're going to find anything written by the priests, this is as good a place as any to start." He straightened, holding a leather bound book. "Ah hah! A journal! This might be of use." He set the diary upon the table and opened it near the end.

OOC: And you can decide what it says :p

OoC: Allright, this might be a little wierd, but it might work.

BiC:

Mhuahaha followed Reid and sat down on the bed whilst his companion was rummaging about the personal belongings of the priest. Mhuahaha wondered what this particular priest must have been like. He must have been a very high rank to aquire quarters in this building, on the top floor of whatever they're in right now. Still, the room was as mundane as everything encountered so far. The door and first safe a welcome exception on this practice. As Reid placed the diary on the table, Mhuahaha stood up, reached out and grabbed it. Suddenly this warm feeling came over him. As if stepping in a nice hot bath. Slowly covering him from his arms, spreading to his head, torso and legs. On minute he was standing in the room, the next he was standing on an unfamilliar plane. Engulfed in the diary, soul, body and all. He found himself in this new place, alone.

An orange mist hung about the place. Uncented, unbendable, no feel what so ever. As if the mist was there, and yet was not. Mhuahaha started to walk. Ages seemed to pass of the same emtpyness. Suddenly he heared a deep strong loud voice echoing from behind. He turned around and found a man dressed in a monks garb standing behind him. He was speaking in an unfamilliar tongue. Mhuahaha tried to open his mouth and speak, however, he could not. He could only stare at the monk, al matter of skin covered in robe. As Mhuahaha waited, standing idly by, the voice's pitch got higher and it's strength ever stronger. The voice turned into a shriek, the monks hood fell off, blue light shot out of a distinctless face's eyes and mouth. A wierd sensation came over Mhuahaha as he was slowly lifted of the ground by an unseen force. His throat and eyes started to burn as they to, shot a blue light.

As suddenly as it all began, it was finished. The monks hood had fallen down again. Everything faded. With the last fading images, words rang through his ears. "Be warned..." Thus he was back in the small, dull room. Lying on the ground after being shot out of the diary. Mhuahaha stood up and rubbed his back. "Ahh, that hurt, who says books can do no harm?" He turned to Reid and told him what hapenned.

OOC: Fair enough.
IC:

Reid chuckled a little. "You know how diaries tend to say 'Don't open' on the outside? Well these guys really meant it. You have to be sure to stop the trap going off before you open it. Well, no harm done. Maybe some good."

He looked into a cupboard, finding a rather dusty set of robes, a couple of prayer books, and a pair of sandals. "Nothing noteworthy in here, anyway. Shall we try another room?"

"Hmm, I agree, we should try another room. Though I think it would be best if we take this diary with us. I can try and translate it. Learn the language." So Mhuahaha picked up the book and dropped it in his already large back, paying no particular attention to it. Trying to translate the language was of a later concern. For now, he had his archsage friend to help him out on this endevour.

And so he walked on to the next door, opening it, encountering the very same things as in the previous room. "Again the room of a priest I imagine. I would assume though, that we'll leave the sleeping quarters for something else quite soon. I can imagine that the priests of Gea would not have been quite numerous. Quite innumerous more so." Mhuahaha quickly searched through the room, finding nothing, not even a diary. The next rooms on this floor were about the same. Just as mundane as the next and empty to boot.

And so, the reached the first staircase, leading down one floor. "Shall we go down?"

OoC: Happy? :)

Reid looked almost as excited as Mhuahaha. "Indeed. I think I mentioned it already, but I've only been to that next floor once, and never deeper. Well, onward and downward." He took a firm step onto the staircase, which promptly crumbled underneath him. Wobbling, he managed to catch himself and return his weight to the foot still on firm ground. No sooner was his leg out the way than the tree began to grow. A branch twisted its way into the space the stair had left, replacing it. Reid looked sideways at Mhuahaha. "Now that I like." Without further mishap, they descended the stairs, whence Reid turned to Mhuahaha. "Now, on this floor are some more offices, and one chapel. That's where I was presented with the urn. It's the room at the very end. Might I suggest we don't bother with the offices - as they'll be the same as the ones we've just been to - and instead head to the chapel?"

Mhuahaha followed Reid downstairs. "Appearantly Gea is trying to make us comfortable." he said after the the tree had replaced the staircase. "Hmm, I do think we should at least quickly scower through the offices. You might never know whether they will give us a hint or not. An archaeologist must never shy away from the mundane and boring stuff, they too can hold clues to the past." And so Mhuahaha opened the first door on the second floor.

It was a room, quite similar to the size and appearance of a classroom. It contained several benches at which the monks might have sat and copied books. He could see it clearly, the room filled with robed men and women, all scribbling away. "I'm glad I am not a monk." He said to Reid. "I don't think my wrist would like the relentless copying of books they usually did."

Reid smiled. "One of the many reasons I didn't consider it as a career choice." He walked into the room, looking at the desks. "Clear signs of use, but nothing of interest." Reaching the front of the room, he saw a small tray, such as they might place finished pages of vellum in. As he looked inside, he gave an audible gasp of mixed surprise and glee. "There a page in here!" It was clear that he found this adventure as exciting as Mhuahaha.
