This looks interesting. Did you want us all too individually enter, or send a kin essay? If we do win, I think this money would make fine prizes for the spring festival and potentially future events.

That is a fine idea! We could put our heads together and write one from the kinship itself. Since we sponsor events, and give away gold prizes it would make a good theme. What say you all? Leave your thoughts.

Yes, I read it and I'm thinking about it. Racing, OTB Middle Earth style, social security, pensions and medical benefits for retired elves and dwarves...all make me think we have a real shot for getting the prize or grant, if you will. What /are/ ideas for the kin?

My idea is already mentioned. We use the prize to further EVENTS on Landroval where winners get prizes. We get to spread the wealth around.

Please post below this post anything additional you think we should include.

Here is what I have written for the essay:

Leaves Of Laurelin - a Landroval Roleplay Kinship

Before Landroval there was Elendilmir. Our members were in The Gathering of Laurelin on that server but there was eventually a dirth of roleplay and in spite of promoting music and tale telling events, horse-races and riddle contests - roleplay on the server became sparse. I moved to Landroval searching for more roleplay, then others followed. Eventually all but three from the original kinship were happily roleplaying on Landroval. Our name became Leaves of Laurelin for several reasons. Essentially we "blew over" from Elendilmir to Landroval, thus we became the leaves from the tree Laurelin. The acronym for the new kinship name, LOL, became our attitude. We enjoy roleplaying, attending events and having good clean fun. We try to laugh a lot and enjoy our friendships. Our crafting branch is known as Leather, Metals, Armor and Ore, or LMAO, and is helpful to our members who need armor, jewelery and potions. None of us REALLY know how many are our numbers, it says 80 in the lorebook but most members are "altaholics" and I could only count 26 members. Does this number mean we are a small kinship? I am not sure but we have been around about a year. We have a kinship house and are also in an alliance with other kinships.

All our full members are also officers. Mainly so we can invite others into the kinship as recruits who will eventually gain full memberships. We don't advertise that members will become officers, actually we don't even recruit. Our members have generally come from roleplayers who are interested in the kinship because they have met some of us during an event or been in a fellowship and enjoy our company. I believe our membership is very stable.

From the above you know our kinship enjoys roleplay but one other thing we do regularly is put on events for others, both roleplayers and non-roleplayers. We have a regular event called Walk To Rivendell we put on for low levels. New players can walk with us from Bree to Rivendell and be protected. In the process they can meet people, roleplay and get advice. This event usually fields two raids of all levels. It is very well-received. We also run horse racing events, generally 3 races across certain parts of Eriador for different speeds of horses.

It is because we put on events, rather than need anything for ourselves, that I am putting together this essay for your essay competition. Winning would be a considerable help in giving prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in our horse races. It will also help when we join with other kinships in promoting and helping at alliance events. Our next BIG event is in a supporting role with other kinships to put on "The Event That Stopped Middle-earth", a huge two day race meet with many other side events in the planning. It will be held next year in March.

For the members of the Leaves of Laurelin and in the spirit of giving,
Makalaure, Cotumo, Gloros, Laurefinde, Macalaure, Witred, Aur, Rombi, Bruthor and Tulus. (all my alts)

Alright, I waited a day and with no feedback I sent the above in and got this reply:

A most splendid entry to the competition (and just in the nick of time ;-) I will be sure to let you know come tomorrow if you have won.

Cordially,
Mr. Humbug

Merry Christmas everyone. I got good news for us all today in my email. We have won 1st prize in the event and share it with another kinship. Mr. Scrooge Humbug will be sending Cotumo the 50 gold for us to use and give to others during our events. If you are so inclined, please thank him personally by email to:
lotrochristmascontest@gmail.com

=======The email I received this morning========

Firstly, a very Merry Christmas to you and your kin (both in-game and out ;-) After much deliberation, I have decided that there shall not be a winner to my essay contest...

...there shall be two winners!

So it is with great pleasure that I inform you that you are a co-winner of "A Christmas Carol Comes to Middle-Earth" essay contest! I hope you do not mind sharing the glory with someone else but do not fret, this does not diminish your achievement nor your prize. If you may be so kind, please let me know the in-game character name that you wish me to send the princely sum of 50 gold coins.

I was deeply moved by everything that your kin selflessly does for the community and wish you the very best in your continuing endeavors to foster such a wonderful atmosphere.

With much respect and admiration,

Scrooge Humbug
