It is said that fortune unlooked for is often the best. That is certainly true in this case. Many of you know that I served in the US Army for a number of years, in fact 21 years, retiring 12 years ago as a Sergeant Major in the FIeld Artillery. Since that time I have reforged myself as a (2d age?) IT Project Manager, developer and business analyst. But life in commercial pursuit for the good of some anonymous shareholders has never been really satisying and only my work in and around the church and her people has held real meaning. Two weeks ago I received a call from an IT consulting firm in Washington, DC, looking for a senior Project Manager who was retired Army, with senior staff experience. The position is as director of IT for a new Army agency that tracks injured soldiers through their medical treatment, rehabilitation, and either return to duty or medical retirement depending on the severity of their injuries and ability to recover. Head spinning as if I'd been mezzed, I took an interview. In very short order I had a phone interview then was flown to DC for a face-to-face, melee range talk. Less than two hours after my interview, before I'd gotten on the plane home, I had an offer I could not refuse. We have come so far from the days of seeing the US military spat on by the American public to the far better sentiments of a nation who can admire and respect sacrifice even if they disagree with the war. I am honored to be taking this job, going back to taking care of troops as I did for so many years. Immediate impact - I have to be in the DC area by Labor Day weekend (3 weeks from now) so you may not see much of me in game until I'm on-site in DC. My wife and son will remain in Florida for David's senior high school year, and then we plan to sell the house here and reunite in Virginia. David will be going to college here in Florida. I'll be racking up frequent flyer miles as I hope to travel home every 2-3 weeks. I've certainly had longer deployments where the most advance communication tool available was an ink pen. With phone, email web cams and plane tickets, we'll manage. Celebrations in the Petrin household! Petrin/ Louis |

How fortunate you are Petrin! To be offered work directed toward helping injured soldiers recover, bravo! You will be wonderful in the job by your capacity as a compassionate, prior military man! Congratulations on such a change. Things will be rough for the next year I know. Two households are never easy. Also not being around daily for David's senior year will be something the whole family will miss I am sure. We will miss you as well and I hope you will have some time to come into game in the times when you have nothing else important to do. Thanks for the update! |

Many thanks Maka! Once I'm on the ground there and settled into an aprtment I'll have evenings only TOO open. Rest assured the axe of your faithful battle companion will return to your side. ** I'll probably not even have a TV, I won't miss it - as I have books, music, and a computer. Also nice is that I am returning to the region of the Shanandoah and other lovely rivers full of smallmouth bass and brook trout - where my love of fl-fishing was first kindled! ** |

Still laughing at Harb I am smiling proudly while giving you loud congratulations. What a beautiful marriage of experience and helping others! What a great project to be heading. I am so glad to hear of the government tracking soldiers and not leaving them to deal with war injuries. That´s a big move for you and your family even if you are used to the moving. I hope you love Washington. I have a real affection for it having grown up there. Goooooood luck! Edited by Issel, Aug 14 2010, 04:48 PM.
