Chair is killing me... any suggestions?

Hi everyone,
I've recently had a bout of sciatica... pain down my lower back and left leg. I'm about to start a course of physical therapy to deal with it, but I'm convinced the root cause is the chair I sit in.

Does anyone have any experience with this problem or other back pain, and suggestions for a new chair? Price isn't really a concern for me anymore... I've dealt with too many cheap, crappy chairs to care about cost anymore.

I've checked some online forums and such, but have only turned up a few options. I'd like feedback from people that can actually give me some details :)

I have Sciatica too. The chiropractor helps me a LOT. I would go to a chiropractor before I tried physical therapy, ask around for a good one because there are lots of bad ones. Also, and ask Issel about this, learning Palate exercises will help your back by strengthening your core muscles. You will balance better and relieve your pack pain in the process.

My chair is a fairly cheap computer chair. Fake leather. I have to get up and walk around every hour or so during computer sessions.

I hope you can get some relief and I hope we see you in game without pain.

Hi Macalaure, thanks for the suggestions. I have my first PT appointment already set up for this coming Monday, so I'm going to try that first since it's all ready to go. But I will certainly keep the chiropractor idea handy if that doesn't work.

I'm avoiding buying a new chair, although I fear it may come to that in the end. The types I've seen that are supposed to be good on the back run from $500-1000. I'll spend if I have to, but that's an awful lot for a chair. Then again, I do spend so much of my time in it, some of it slaying Orcs :)

Now Pilates is an interesting idea... I'll have to look more into that.

Turwyn like to play in her recliner, feet up, to help her back. I enjoy playing from a recliner too, but I can fall asleep at the drop of a hat and have done so playing so much that I switched back to a regular, but comfortable, computer chair.
Good luck!

Yes, I have experience with this. Do the stretching exercises the therapist is going to show you. Go online and learn some gentle yoga stretches as well. I do do Pilates and they have all sorts of equipment and all sorts of experience for dealing with that kind of pain among many others.
I HATE chiropractors having had more bad, painful, expensive experiences with them than not, I'm sorry to say.
You might consider your shoes as well. I used to work in a big hotel where I wore clogs and one foot was being thrown slightly outward when I walked (I walked looooong distances) and that provoked my first bout of sciatic.
I wish you all the best. There is an end to the dark tunnel of sciatica.

I'm feeling much better now, thanks to all for your suggestions. I've been to physical therapy, and I'll be starting yoga and pilates after the treatment is done, to hopefully stave off any further issues in the future.

I also bought a really nice chair, so hopefully you'll see me in game more frequently, now that I'm not afraid of my desk chair. (never though I'd pay that much, but it's worth it!)

How cool is that? Yoga AND Pilates. I do both myself and it is the difference between hobbling and walking around with a spring in my step. Good luck!

I talked to my sister who uses light emitting diodes (sounds like hoohaa to me but okay) which she recommends.

This post brought back some good memories for me with treatment and caregivers.

Sometimes it does take a bit of hassle to find that right whatever that works. Stick with it.

I do love all the chair stories, as they make me think of Goldilocks looking for the "just right" chair.

I'm at computer screens all day (usually two-three at work) so yeah, getting the ergonomics right is really helpful. Not just chair but think about your shoulder posture. Hunched shoulders I've found pull on the mid-back right where those small muscles start, so just a downhill tug of war between upper and lower back after that and the glutes usually win... That's when the stretching helps. ;-)

Anyhow, glad you've found some relief. These days I just choose to stand. I'm getting entish.

I think of "legs over the shoulders" as the human translation of "Elvish exercise" :)
