I've been having some issues with my computer of late. I blamed it on the fact that our HVAC died and we had the 100+ F heat wave. Well, whether it's the heat or time, it won't boot. The good news is that my hubby's computer is working just fine. *knocks on wood* He mostly works nights (and weekends), so it shouldn't affect my game play that much if there's not an easy fix and we have to share a computer for a while until we can figure out how to replace mine. We'll be taking it to a fixit to try to suss out how bad it is. When I know more, I will post again to say so. |

I am sorry for your PC problem Gliaer. My laptop is in the shop now too but I have my reliable desktop to play on so I am lucky. Issel has gotten her new laptop repaired now and is playing again. Together all of us will chase the shadow back to the void where it belongs! |

Turns out it wasn't an easy fix. When the parts are almost what you can get a huge upgrade for...well...you promise the spouse he'll get his upgrade at Christmas. For a refurb I worked hard right up until its death, four years isn't so bad, in my opinion. May it be repurposed well. We found a place that sells refurbs not so far off from here. We're going shopping tomorrow. (For a tech heavy area like the RDU triangle has, you'd think at least Fry's would open a branch for Pete's sake. So few computer shops here, it's abyssmal.) Off to take a nap before we meet tonight, with dreams of the huge leap graphics have made in average home computers since 2006--I forsee myself taking an annoying amount of long looks at landscapes I could only sacrificially see at higher qualities before in the near future. It's going to be quite refreshing just to run through tall grass I couldn't see if I wanted to move.

You were lucky to get 4 years, so much has happened to computers in that time. Are you in the market for a laptop or a desktop? Maybe you said above... What is the RDU triangle? I had some very good luck looking on CraigsList for computers from private parties. Bought my gaming machine for $600, it is worth at least $2000 if I was to buy the parts and put them together. I also bought my grandson his first ibook as a refurbished computer for $250. I sure wish the game ran on a mac! Good luck with your shopping. PS - Look at New Egg or Tiger Direct for a deal too. |

In regards to four years: I know how lucky I've been. I used to work bookoo hours as a Freelance editor and designer, so that poor thing really did get a workout. Work has slowed down thanks to the recession, but there's hope that it won't last much longer. RDU= our local largish airport, but also signifies Raleigh/Durham/Universities (North Carolina in the US). A lot of folks call it RDU Triangle, some just The Triangle, but the official is the Research Triangle. Lots of tech heads. We do have actual Tiger Direct brick and mortar stores here (which I've been to), but they are very hit and miss--and small compared to the warehouses of Fry's in Cali. (The only thing I miss about Los Angeles is Fry's.) After much discussion, we decided to not futz around replacing. We pretty much stayed on budget, but yes, a lot has changed. When we got my now old computer, it was right when Vista was rolling out which I (thankfully) avoided like the plauge. Now, however, I have a decent midgrade + home computer that is worlds better than what I had, and brand spanking new so warranties and all that fun stuff. Getting used to 7 and this new keyboard layout will take some getting used to, though. Of course, now hubby wants his upgrade as well, so that we'll go the more usual route of looking around more thriftily so we don't have the near panic we had with this when his decides four years was enough. (I've been applying to a ton of freelance gigs of late, and if any come through, I may be needing the computer for work as well as play at the drop of the hat--and we just don't share well when it comes to things like that.) If work really picks up at any point this year, I can always have fun hunting for a dream machine then. Meantime, I'm keeping my old computer to see if I can make it a project for all my *coughs* copious amounts of spare time. I still have my old laptop we bought in...2000...yeah, that long ago. It whines pathetically (I will replace the fan someday) and we really only kept it for business trips to deal with e-mail, burning pics to swap at cons and such, although I did log into Guild Wars and play for a bit once in our hotel in Germany when I couldn't sleep. That was kinda fun. (Before I made the swap to LOTRO as my main game.) Despite the whine, it still did what it needed to do for those sorts of times, so we never got rid of it, and funds always seemed to go elsewhere with tech things (flat screen monitors amongst them). We tried to use it for LOTRO when Sean's power supply took a dive a few months ago, but that went nowhere. Anyhoo...the game's loading now. With such updatesd innards, I have no idea if I'll be around tonight in game because of patches and such, but I'm pretty sure I'll definitely be around for Tuesday group. |

Glad to hear you are loading your computer! And all the other information too. I just called about my laptop and my tech said "Didn't you pick that up, I don't see it around here?" I was thinking uh oh... Anyway, after some confusion, come to find out a just-hired tech had put the laptop on a shelf in it's bag with the repair notes and forgot to tell my guy. So a new DVD drive and a new HD are not even ordered yet. Good thing I have my reliable desktop! |
