A woman in a lesbian relationship has given birth to the first baby in France in 2013.

The baby boy, named Sacha, was born on the morning of New Year’s Day between midnight and a minute past midnight at the Moulins Hospital Centre, in central France, the hospital announced.

Sacha, measuring 48.5 cm long and weighing 2.92 kilograms, was conceived through artificial insemination in Belgium.

His mother, Maude, has been in a civil union with her partner, Delphine, since 2010, according to the regional newspaper La Montagne.

Maude was admitted to the hospital at 5am on New Year’s Eve.

The couple is said to be hopeful the French parliament would soon pass a law allowing same-sex marriage so they could get married.

France’s national assembly is due to consider the bill later this month as supporters and opponents of same-sex marriage step up their campaigns.

Under current laws, Delphine has no legal status in relation to the child.

The following countries have already legalised gay marriage:

The Netherlands (2001)
Belgium (2003)
Spain and Canada (2005)
South Africa (2006)
Norway (2008)
Sweden (2009)
Argentina, Iceland, Portugal (2010)
Denmark (2012)

Nine US states, including Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Washington, have also legalised same-sex marriage.

I don't get the "progress in France" bit! What has it got to do with this story?

I'd like OP to explain this too. As far as I know, it must not be the first time a French lesbian couple goes to Belgium for artificial insemination.

Yes, but how does this represent "progress" on that score?

I guess the fact that this birth may help shed positive light on lesbian parents and may help the pro stance.

But ya I agree that the element of progress is not strong in this case. Its just The baby was born on a special day. It's not like the non-mother lady won the adoption battle.

It will be progress when the adoption will be legal and when French lesbians won't have to travel all the way to Belgium to get a sperm donor

The list of countries that recognise gay marriage is incomplete. Israel also recognises gay marriage. They still don't recognise gay marriage performed in Israel, due to opposition from the religious right, but gay marriages performed abroad, for instance in Canada, are recognised in Israel. Here is an article with the details:

Israeli high court orders gay marriage recognition

JERUSALEM (AP) — In a landmark ruling, Israel's Supreme Court ordered the government Tuesday to recognize same-sex marriages performed abroad.

The lone dissenter on the seven-judge panel was an observant Jew, highlighting the controversy the decision immediately touched off among ultra-Orthodox Jews and other conservative groups in Israel.

Efforts by Israel's gay community to win approval for same-sex marriage, a key issue in the U.S. and Europe, face a major obstacle because Israel's religious authorities have a monopoly over marriage and divorce.

Yossi Ben-Ari and Laurent Schuman were married in Canada after that country legalized same-sex marriage in 2003. Determined after a 21-year partnership to enjoy all the privileges of a married couple in Israel, they were among five couples who petitioned the Supreme Court to have their marriage registered here, too.

"We're delighted, but the struggle is not over," Ben-Ari said.

Moshe Negbi, a legal expert, said the court's decision is mostly symbolic because gay couples in Israel already had many of the rights of heterosexual partnerships. The significant changes are that they will now get the same tax breaks as a married couple and be able to adopt children, Negbi said.

Of course.

Those against it aren't the majority in France.

:eyeroll: I feel like people who judge based on only clothes and hair don't have eyes. The woman, from what I can see in that picture, is attractive. She has a pretty face and decent body. If she grew out her hair, you'd think she was just fine. She's not ugly in any way. So stupid. I'd take an attractive butch over an ugly, manly, fat girl trying to make herself pretty tbh.

You know, that's a very irrelevant remark. Who cares if they look good or bad? That's not the point of the topic and I think is very ridiculous that you are trying to turn this thread into a butch bashing shitfest. Grow up.
