Pretty woman was a fantasy movie. And no one complained.
Do men have a fantasy of turning a prostitute into a respectable woman? :hmmm:
Yes, a lot of fiction has that theme, not always a prostitute, but often a man "improves" a woman in some way, the archetype might be, Sleeping Beauty, the woman is literally asleep until the prince awakens her, also Cinderella, only magic and Prince Charming elevates her status.

Also Pygmalion, My Fair Lady, an erudite professor teaches a common flower vendor to be a proper English lady, and Never on Sunday, a nerdy American tourist tries to "rescue" a Greek prostitute, who doesn't want to be rescued. That movie broke the mold, because the prostitute rejected the American and chose to marry a regular Greek guy whom she'd probably already taken money from.

And on and on. Changing someone is dominating them, that's why so many movies are about a man rescuing and teaching a woman.

In real life, men feel very free to criticize a woman they are attracted to. In fact, those pick up artist assholes call it "negging," deliberately finding fault with a woman to make her insecure, so she will bond with the asshole. It works, too! but only with women who already have low self esteem.

Some have. But I was thinking about how the prostitute finds prince charmed, rich and handsome. This is a fantasy for sure.
Yeah, that's a fantasy that those kinds of men hire prostitutes (I know they do sometimes). I guess that would be a kinky straight woman's fantasy? Straight women don't usually fantasize about being prostitutes. I don't think?

Of course they do! Look at the way they dress and act.

Look at Madonna, how about the lyrics to Material Girl. A common straight girl fantasy, make them want me, make them pay. The fantasy isn't to be a common street hooker, but a desirable, high end call girl.

I guess the difference is there's a ton more work available for women selling to men than women selling to women.

Films are fantasy.
Being a fantasy is the most important role a film can have.
If you don't like it, watch documentaries.

zzzzz. And that woman's face is a plastic surgery disaster.
:eyeroll: And here we go with the negativity. We lesbians bitch and moan about the lack of representation we get then once we get some we're never happy. Good God!
Not the OP, and I'm not writing this off as a shit film (looks interesting, actually), but should we be happy with any and every instance of representation?
not Op but it's not about representation that she's pointing out.
She was flat out saying that the actress had plastic surgery disaster= ugly.

Seriously? A person can like fantasy and still have a problem with a particular fantasy. That doesn't mean they have to stop watching movies.

You're right. I took issue with the premise but I could be totally wrong and the movie might actually deal with the subject well or it might be interesting in other ways. I don't mean to completely dismiss it without having seen it.

OP here.

If you have a problem with a certain fantasy, it's your right to criticize it, or if you chose, simply don't watch the film. Just don't expect films to be anything more than a fantasy, cause they're not.

Reading just the subject-line I thought this thread is for a documentary about concussions in the NFL.

I think it's too new to be available, but it will be, and this is the type of movie that will end up on one of those little lesbian film blogs, with a link to one of those do it yourself uploading sites, so be patient.

I will watch this movie before I judge it. But I recently saw breaking the girls which is a whodunit with lots of lesbian twists. But this movie gives you no one good to root for and once again lesbians are portrayed as killers.

Personally I know dozens of les and bi women and none are killers and many work for the military.

Yeah that doesn't look like they're glamorizing it at all :retard:

Who was it saying they made the sex look gross and unsatisfying, again? Cuz I'm not seeing that.

Yeah I mean it makes more sense to make it completely unrealistic for this movie. I was just arguing that the plot was unrealistic and somebody told me that in response (that it wasn't glamorous), so obviously they need better glasses? Or a better memory?

There are some awkward (and, in one case - scary) moments and encounters in this movie. Abby's first extra-marital affair with the hooker was definitely gross.

Enough with the bitching. If you don't want to see it, then don't see it.

I'm not understanding some of the comments in this thread. Do you all think this movie is going to encourage lesbians to become prostitutes? Did Pretty Woman encourage straight women from becoming prostitutes?

Nobody has said anything like that at all. I was just expressing annoyance that it was such an unrealistic depiction of escorting/prostitution.
