In Concussion, Robin plays Abby, a suburban housewife who comes to understand that her relationship cannot be fixed in one essential way; the couple will never have a successful sex lifeā€¦ Rather than have an affair, she tries to preserve the relationship by having a controlled series of sexual encounters with strangers for which she arranges to be paid, not because she needs money, but because she needs rules and boundaries. She becomes a prostitute, but she manages the enterprise with all the common sense that years of being a mom and a conscientious member of a well functioning family unit have taught her. It is a provocative movie that is bound to provoke discussion about how best to answer an essential question, one that arises in every marriage; how do we honor ourselves and stay true to those we love? Concussion is in post-production now and will likely be released in 2013.

I don't like the way this sounds, I guess because the word concussion has a negative connotation.

Didn't register the first time I viewed the trailer, but Robin Weigert = Calamity Jane in Deadwood. I did recognize Maggie Siff (Rachel Menken in Mad Men) though.

Maggie Siff also plays Tara on Sons of Anarchy, and is hotter than hell. I can't believe she's playing a lesbian. Dream come true :lol

:eyeroll: And here we go with the negativity. We lesbians bitch and moan about the lack of representation we get then once we get some we're never happy. Good God!

This is lchat. It's not the most sophisticated crowd. Not to say there aren't some intelligent posters put a lot of the criticism is knee jerk and uninformed.

Concussion was selected for the Independent Filmmaker Project's 2012 Narrative Independent Filmmaker Lab, so early cuts must be promising.

Not the OP, and I'm not writing this off as a shit film (looks interesting, actually), but should we be happy with any and every instance of representation?

No we shouldn't be happy with every bit of rep we get ( which is damn near zero) but the problem is that we're NEVER happy. This movie may not come off as a masterpiece but come on....why the negativity? Atleast she's not screwing a dude, how many "lesbian" movies can you say that about?

Apparently lesbian films can't involve complexity. Definitely no men, but also no infidelity, and god help us no sex workers. Pad production values, bad writing, and bad acting are all more forgivable than those transgressions.

This film looks to be a parable. It's not like anyone thinks a bored lesbian housewife is going to become a prostitute for women in real life. It has attracted fantastic actors and the Independent Filmmaker Project recognition means the execution is at least decent. It would be refreshing if people could refrain from pre-judging the story till they see where the filmmaker takes it.

Isn't the whole thing about her trying to keep her marriage together with the little guy? Sorry, I couldn't get sound when I watched the trailer, so I'm not sure. If so, not screwing a dude doesn't really sound like something you can confirm at this point.

I think they're confused by "housewife". She's in a lesbian marriage. She doesn't screw men.

I don't care if the movie has a man in it or thousand men, what I care about is if a non in denial, non-closet case "lesbian" is sleeping with a man because she is bored with her sex life or desperately trying to get pregnant. I am not saying that is what this film is about, just making a point about lesbian movies in general and what one poster mentioned up thread.

Pre-judging it as interesting. The premise as the writer presents it DOES seem interesting to me. The name actors and the award inspire confidence.

Of course there is none of that in this movie, so we need to find other reasons to bash it.

Thank God, it is one of a few that doesn't. I'm not per-judging the film as anything and I will check it out, then ignore if it's crap. I only bash the films that involve what is mentioned in the quoted.

You are definitely involved with this movie somehow or know people who are. Your hyping of it isn't natural to a disinterested third party from just watching a quick trailer. I bet you're the same poster from the movie thread a couple of days ago who was gushing over it then.

I don't care how much you hype it I thought it looked shit then and I still think it does now.

I'm thinking back to those escort threads in LChat 1.0. This film seems to have something for nearly everyone:

- Asianphiles

- Babydykes who are attracted to women who are, at least, ten years their senior

- Girls/women who are of the opinion that they're so physically unattractive that hooking up with an escort/prostitute may be the only way they'll ever get laid

- Loan indebted college students who hope that some day, they, too, can have such first world problems as living in an upper class suburban neighborhood, and trying to find a way to spice up their 10+ plus marriage and keep it intact

- Lesbian sugarbabies

Nah, just a lesbian who doesn't think the pinnacle Imagine Me and You was the pinnacle of lesbian cinema.

Nah you are too invested in this movie not to have some kind of stake in it. You get very defensive when people say they don't like the looks of it.

This movie is nothing special looking in anyway. A housewife prostitute is not the pinnacle of lesbian cinema. It's a porn plot.

This is getting confusing.

The story is of a lesbian housewife who's sex life with partner is lacking (surprise surprise ^o) ) so she becomes a prostitute for women only?

Did I get this right? Do I get a cookie?

Hah. Yeah, this all does sound pretty implausible crazy. IDK. Maybe the namesake incident of this movie sparked some kind of personality change? :ermm:

Okay, thanks for that. Don't know why I can't get sound, so I thought the guy with the ladder was her husband. I'll wait for reviews, but I do like the lead actress and it looks like it could be interesting. Like someone else said, just having the lesbian(s) not sleep with a man is half the battle of being a watchable film.

Agreed. It's really sad that in this day and age when we get a lesbian movie where there is no sex with men, it's still surprising.
