I was looking to buy a new bike soon-ish, and i don't really have any clue to what is good. I heard some bad things about bikes direct, but they're cheap as hell and I was wondering if that's a good place to get one? and does anyone know anything about Mercier?

don't get a fixed gear, especially if you're a novice rider.
don't buy from bikes direct.
if you're determined to get a single speed (which, for commuting/city riding is really all you need), go to CK Cycles on Central. I used to work there, and they have a few different models they can show you starting at $300. Having a shop right in the area is key, they can help fit you to the right sized bike, and help with any troubles you may have down the road.

i rode single speed all last summer and figured i'd try a fixed gear, and if it sucked as much as everyone says i can just get a freewheel. why is bikes direct such crap? i keep hearing how bad it is but nobody gives an actual reason as to why.

thanks for the help!!

Make sure you buy a bike with a seat that isn't broken like the one #2 rides.

bikes direct just sells bottom of the barrel generic asian crap. support your local shop! you'll never understand this until something happens like stripping a crank arm and you have to try to warranty stuff through the mail. it's well worth the extra $40 or whatever to buy local, plus you don't risk improper assembly. also, most single speeds come with a fixed/FW rear hub so if you don't like riding fixed, you can swap. however, you need to make sure your rear wheel actually has that type of hub.

Go to CK, even though Kid Rock occasionally works there they are still the most reputable shop around. You can usually get a free wheel put on a fixed gear or buy a wheel with a flip flop hub (that way you can switch if you want), honestly that is my favorite way to ride.

Ok i'm convinced!! i'm gonna go to CK and get a flippin sweet bike. I decided this summer i'm gonna commute to albany from troy on a bike every day, only problem being I don't have a bike right now, and i think my right foot has a stress fracture.

I stopped in there today and they had 2 models of SE Drafts that'd be right up your alley, $260 and $330.

Have you tried out the bike path yet!???? it was the easiest way for me to get to hvcc from albany and it was a scenic ride also! I wouldn't suggest riding it at night though. there have been head on collisions with broken parts.

good luck finding A bike!

nah son. I just got a bike from some dude off of craig's list yesterday, but it's kind of shitty. i'm gonna be making a monstrosity over the next week or so, but i'm gettinig my old bike today out of hibernation so hopefully if it doesn't fall apart when i sit on it i'll ride it back to troy to see how much it sucks. methinks it won't be so horrible

p.s. i stopped by your place after work but you weren't home. then i cried. not really. maybe a little ;)
