Red & dangerous! Rawr!
She sounded a little forlorn and Morcant wished he could do something about it. Could one drag information out of the Fair Folk by force? He supposed not, though he really wanted to try. 'I guess it'll be a matter of time before you do figure out, if you're meant to be here,' he said. At least, that's what he assumed. If there weren't any answers to be found, then why would she feel so strongly about being here?

She looked up and smiled at him. ‘You have that much faith in me?’

'After seeing all the things you can do? Sure I have. Maybe you can look in a puddle of water and fish your answers out of it.' He'd meant the last bit as a joke, but did wonder if it could work that way.

She tensed. ‘Perhaps. But what I’ve seen looks very abstract. I don’t think it works that way.’ And she didn’t want to. ‘It’s how I saw my dead mother. And – things like that.’

'Oh. Well, I don't know the first thing about this sort of stuff,' he admitted. 'There's no way you can control that like you can the ice?'

She shrugged, again feeling the weight of his arm. If he pushed her down, like in the dream, she had no way to struggle up. ‘I don’t know. Morcant…’

'Yes?' He raised his eyebrows. 'What is it, Essylt?'

He leaned his head against the wall of their home and thought about it. 'I don't know,' he answered truthfully. 'Perhaps, if you really wanted to, you could.'

She did really want to. Everyday made the missing a bit worse. And with every passing day, she thought that her father’s heart might break a little more, until it would be like a crushed stone, with only dust and crumbles remaining. Yet she did not dare to. ‘What if I stay here forever?’

Another question to which he didn't know the answer. Morcant lifted his shoulders a little. 'If you stay here forever, at least you'll have a roof over your head.' He removed the arm he'd put around her and tapped with it on the wall behind them.

It was probably about time that she started to make this place more of a home and less of a shelter. Essylt sighed, then took his arm and put it over her shoulder again. ‘Can you stay this way? I want to feel safe.’

'Of course,' he said, surprised. Yes, he'd definitely have to go to the caer tomorrow and see what could be done about the Roman's behavior. If Essylt was to stay here for a while longer, she should at least feel safe, he thought. Perhaps he should ask his brothers to keep an eye on her while they moved around the hills and settlement in search for information.

'Marcus Lentulus told me that the chieftain is very sick,' Essylt said after a while. 'Did you know? Apparently his wife does most of his work, in close deliberation with Rufus himself.'

The lighter expression slid of his face, replaced by a frown. 'He is?' That was bad news. In close deliberation - that sounded like the woman probably left all the decisions to the Roman. He sniffed. He'd have to keep his mouth shut about Rufus' antics then, and simply seek out Rhywallon. 'Did he tell you what kind of disease the man suffers from?'

She shook her head. 'Just that I could ask him anything I wanted. Anything at all.'

As much as he disliked taking anything from the Roman, Morcant had to admit that this promise could come in handy. But there was something behind the words that put him on guard. The man wouldn't simply give and expect nothing in return, that much was clear. 'And did you ask him for anything?'

'Castles and princes,' she said softly, playing with her sleeve. 'I wouldn't so eagerly ask him for something, Morcant. I'm not that foolish.'

'Didn't say you were,' he said and couldn't help a faint smile at the thought of what she'd asked the man. 'Maybe we can take our advantage from this, though.'

He pulled a face. 'I'd rather not. Not if you go alone.' But he didn't think the man would be so eager to comply if he'd be present whenever Essylt spoke to him.

Morcant heaved a sigh. 'Let me think about it, okay?' If she was eager to help in this way, did he have the right to tell her not to? She didn't owe him anything, after all. He'd have to see if he could think of a way to bring the Roman down without actually killing him. If that required Essylt's help... He still didn't like the thought of it.

She nodded silently, wondering if she was being very stupid to plunge herself in another of his plots.

Tudwrig leaned against the windowsill without knowing how he got there. The lack of screaming assured him he hadn't hurt anyone, thank the gods. He had no idea how long it had been since Lentulus' last visit, when he had to leave Briallen alone with the man, but he guessed a couple of days. Certainly no longer than a week, since he could still see some building-framework that was being broken down in the settlement. After breathing in the cool air for a while, he pushed himself away from the window. He felt steady enough and decided to go down and see how the household was managing. And he wanted to see Briallen.

Briallen glanced at Braegne, who was hastily gathering her dresses and tunics to fold them in the travelling bag, as her own hands rummaged with a set of small-clothes and ribbons to tie her hair back from her face. A knock on her half-open door and Eiluned peered in, a confused look on her narrow face. ‘My lady, you called for me with has –’
‘I’ll have you know that you shall be in charge of the runnings of Caer March for a while,’ Briallen said briskly, not waiting for the woman to finish her words.
Eiluned had the control to keep her eyes unblinking, yet Briallen could see how her mouth tightened. ‘You’re leaving?’
‘Quite.’ She closed her hip purse, drawing the strings into a tight knot. ‘Braegne, after you finish here, go to the kitchen and order our supplies for the road. We need enough rations for a guard, so press the matter. Eiluned, you need to take particular care to the granary, make sure the settlement does not claim more than they already get from us now. And keep a watchful eye on every move that Marcus Lentulus makes, especially if he feels need to visit us up here. Understood?’

'Yes, my lady. Might I ask why you are leaving and how long you'll be gone?'
Tudwrig halted in his tracks hearing the words coming from Eiluned's lips. Was Briallen leaving? Had he done something he couldn't remember that had scared her, or hurt her? Cold chills ran down his spine and he forced his feet to move forward. 'What's this?' he asked.

‘That’s…’ She swallowed her words as soon as his voice filled the room. She turned about, facing her husband. Oh, gods, didn’t he look as if he had spent years fumbling underground? She had intended to see him about this as soon as her first panic had worn off, and most of her preparations had been done or carried out by her orders. ‘Just see that you do,’ she told Eiluned quickly. ‘And Braegne, don’t forget to prepare more of the draught to leave for my lord.’
Braegne nodded, a harried and disturbed look on her face. Briallen drew Tudwrig outside the door. ‘I must leave.’

'Why?' he asked, his mouth as dry as a dusty cropfield in the grip of a long spell of drought, and stealed himself to hear the worst. If he'd harmed her, it would be for the best if she did leave before he killed her.

‘Because…Because I’ve received news from my home.’ She could see that her words were distressing him. She wished she didn’t have to tell him. ‘It’s my mother. Likely I won’t even be in time to see her farewell. Still, I must ride out as soon as I can. It’s a long journey.’ Especially now. The messenger had probably taken a risk by wading through the swollen river, but she and Braegne couldn’t brave a landscape running wild by autumn rains. To take the way around would certainly take up most of three days. Perhaps more. 'You'll need to give me an escort of your men.'
