Red & dangerous! Rawr!
After long moments, his ragged breathing calmed down. 'Thank the gods,' he muttered. Or damn them because they allowed this suffering? He didn't know. Tudwrig pulled himself up, looking at Briallen. 'Why did you come in?' he asked with his heart in his throat. 'I could have killed you...'

‘Yet you did not.’ Her fingers trailed over his face. ‘I guess even the monster didn’t really want to. And I…I wanted to see you. It’s so hard, Tudwrig! To know that you’re in here, all alone, so savage…’

'It's better this way,' he said, wrapping his arms around her and pressing his cheek against hers. 'Alone, I can't hurt anyone.'

‘I know,’ she said, ‘I know, Tudwrig. I wouldn’t suggest that you prowl about the caer when you’re in that state. But you didn’t hurt me!’

'I could have! Please, Briallen, I'd never forgive myself if I hurt you,' he said and stroked her face.

Briallen bowed her head, feeling his hands on her cheeks. He didn’t want her to do this again. It was probably sensible, no: probably even the only option if she did not want to end like his first two wives. ‘I’m sorry.’
And yet, she wanted something to change! To make a difference for this man, who sat so lonely in his dark room, unable to go into the world and be a true chieftain for his people. ‘You’re saying that I should accept that you’re a monster.’

'No, good heavens, no,' he said bitterly, 'I haven't even accepted it myself. I just - I cannot lose you. I'd die.'

'But Tudwrig,' she tried again, not ready to give this up yet, 'you changed back!'

'And what if I don't, next time?' He knew what she was trying to accomplish, but he was afraid it would be a repetition of Braegne's herbal draught: for a while, it'd work, and then it'd come back with a vengeance.

She pulled the knife from her belt and showed it to him. ‘Not in your heart. Just to distract it for a little while I’d run away.’

He swallowed, then attempted to smile. It became a faint grimas. 'I shouldn't underestimate you,' he said quietly.

Briallen put the knife down, looking at the blade with some disgust. ‘The thought of using it sickens me.’ She looked up. ‘You’re my lord and chieftain. If you tell me not to do this again, then I won’t.’

He found that he didn't have the heart to order her not to do something, no matter how dangerous it may seem. 'I'm wishing just as much as you are that this'll work, but I'm afraid, Briallen...' He touched her hair, put his hand in her neck. 'Yet I won't tell you not to do it again, I just pray that you'll be careful.' Tudwrig pulled her in a hug, holding her so tightly as if that could make everything but the two of them disappear.

His embrace was a sudden, tight thing that hurt her shoulders. She didn’t pull away. ‘I will be,’ she promised him. ‘There’s something I have to tell you in this regard.’

'What is it?' He let go of her, though he would have liked to kiss her now.

‘Gwenllian and I went to Wayland’s Smithy,’ Briallen said. ‘We discovered signs inside the walls of the burrow and I think they’re…the same as those two tapestries in the hall. One rising and one setting sun.’ She looked at him, searching his face for a trace of recognition. ‘Remember when we were out riding and you wanted to go down there? I said I was unwell, but the truth is that I was just so scared of that place.’

'The tapestries... I used to sit in front of them when I was a boy, seeing other worlds in the tatting,' he said it with a smile, loosing himself in those memories for a spell. 'What? I'm sorry...' Tudwrig shook his head to get rid of the cobwebs that had suddenly lodged there. 'You were afraid? Then why did you go back?'

‘Because you seemed so transfixed at the time. And I was scared because I felt it. Something pulling you. Isn’t that right? There’s something very – I don’t know – eldritch about that place. I thought, if…you’re drawn to it so much and your curse is so unnatural, it’s the best place to start looking.’

'Oh, yes, I probably couldn't walk away from it if I wanted to. It's almost the same with the tapestries, only less strong.' He frowned and looked at his closed window. 'Are you sure you want to do this? It could be dangerous...'

‘Of course I’m sure,’ she said. ‘What else do you expect me to do? Sit by and have our lives be ruined by this?’

He smiled wearily. 'No, I suppose not.' Tudwrig tucked a bit of unruly hair behind her ear. 'I should've seen this coming after the first day I met you.' It wasn't a reproach, and he bent forward to kiss her.

She opened her mouth for him and sank down back on the floor, pulling him along until she was underneath and he could lean over her. ‘Touch me,’ she said, her eyes burning. ‘I want to feel that you’re real right now.’

She didn't have to ask again. Tudwrig felt remarkably free of headaches and the fear to turn again as his fingers trailed over her face, neck and shoulders, down to her bustline and waist. Her skin was so soft, he would like to feel it every minute of every day, covering it in kisses and carresses.

She smiled through his kisses and felt her eyes were wet. ‘I’m afraid I’m really in my moontide now,’ she confessed, her head falling back on the carpet. ‘Or I would have demanded more of you.’ She reached out a hand and pulled him next to her, to lie side by side on the floor. ‘We have no luck, it seems.’

'You wouldn't have to demand that,' he said hoarsely, putting his arms around her and pulling her close. 'I'll be the first to know when your moontide is gone, won't I?'

Something warm spread inside her, like a gentle fire. ‘I’m happy that I was sent to marry you,’ she said softly. ‘You’re a good man.’

'I'm grateful that you decided to stay after everything that happened,' he said into her hair and smiled, for the first time in many months, a genuine, carefree smile.

It was perhaps time to send a message back to Shadow’s Well. Her mother must be wanting to hear from her. ‘We can just stay like this for a while, can’t we?’ She didn’t care that it was on the cold floor of his room.

'Of course, whatever you want,' he said and made himself comfortable against her warm body, stroking the soft tresses of her hair and breathing in her scent. Perhaps the Gods hadn't really abandoned him, granting him these small moments of bliss, if only to give him strength to keep fighting the curse. He hoped that Briallen would find a cure, but not just for his own sake. She deserved a normal husband and a normal marriage, above everything.

It was hours later that Briallen left his room, feeling warmer that ever, despite their time spent lying on the cold floor. It had rained for nearly the whole day, but now the sun was setting, turning the sky into a moody, indigo blue and it seemed to have cleared. She wrapped a winter cloak around her shoulders and walked outside over the path to the backyard. There was a small flower garden here, just below her bedroom window. The plants were dripping with rain, their leaves heavy from the many drops. The smell of earth and vegetation hung heavily in the air. Briallen sniffed it in, enjoying the pleasant fresh tingle. She’d plant lavender and thyme here come spring, and perhaps wild strawberries.
