He looked up at the question. 'Eh? Oh, twenty-four. I think... haven't really been keeping track the past years.' Morcant frowned as he tried to remember. 'Yes, twenty-four.'

She shuffled to find a more comfortable place to sit. 'Did you stop counting after you ran away?' she guessed, looking from him to the fire. 'I think I stopped doing things when Bronwen died...But I can't quite remember.'

He nodded. 'Didn't seem so important to know how old I was after I left, you know? Gwyddien didn't care for my age, and I stopped caring for it too.'

Yet he was still young. ‘This is the life you wish to lead until the end,’ she muttered. ‘Until you die?’

'If something better crosses my path, I'll take the opportunity. But I don't have much in the way of a life-expectancy anyway.' He flashed a grin at her.

'I'll wager there'll be many girls who'd want to be your wife,' she replied before she could stop herself.

He gave a short laugh. 'You think? I haven't met any of those girls yet, though.' Instead he'd met Essylt, and she had probably spoiled him for any other woman. But that was okay. Morcant didn't intend to settle down. He wasn't even sure if he could, with his guilt still gnawing away at him in the nights.

She pulled up her legs, wrapping her arms around them. His laugh made her blush, but so close to the fire it would probably seem more like a flush by the grace of the flames.

He finished preparing their food in silent and gave Essylt her bowl. 'I'm afraid it's all a bit watery,' said he with half a smile. 'But it's prepared with love.'

Essylt took the bowl from him. He was right; the whole substance was watery. It tasted like rain with meat, but it was good that they’d eat it before it got spoiled. She looked about the cave. There was little difference with her initial kidnap, only now she had come running back to this man. She wondered if he really would have cut her throat if she had refused to come with him.

He didn't realize how famished he was until his lips touched the food, and it was gone in a time even Cuhelyn would've had trouble to beat. 'I think we'll reach the settlement tomorrow,' he told her after he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. 'I've some money, but not much. We'll invest in a good cloak for you and provisions, but I can't promise we'll be able to spend the night in a warm bed.'

‘It’s alright,’ she promised him. ‘I won’t complain…when I ran away, I knew it’d be this or worse.’

He nodded, glad she was taking it well. But, after all that she'd been through, did he expect anything else? The lack of money would start to get a problem, though. He had to see if he could pick this or that high Roman's pocket - they infested the settlements like vermin, so it shouldn't be too hard to find one. 'We best get some rest now, I think.' Outside, the rain had all but stopped.

She was tired indeed. Essylt curled up like a little mouse. The fire was like a stout protector between herself and the dark outside, where the wind had picked up a howling sound like dying wolf. She wondered if he’d fold her in his arms again, like he’d done after her bad dreams. She wanted the cloak, but he was still wearing it.

Much as though he tried, Morcant couldn't fall asleep. He didn't drown today. Did that mean he'd somehow changed the future Essylt had seen in her dream, or simply that he'd drown another day? He didn't know - didn't really want to know, but he couldn't stop thinking about it. Somewhere late in the night or early in the morning, he drifted off to sleep out of sheer exhaustion.

Briallen sat with her back to his door, staring at the high stone ceiling. She didn’t care if servants would pass and see her in this odd state, but no one walked by. She’d knocked and knocked but had only received growls for a reply, and nothing but inhuman silence. It was too much. It was so unbearable. She thumped her head to the wood and it hurt, but not so badly as her lip, which was bleeding.

There was a bother at the door and he wanted it gone. As it was, however, he couldn't do anything about it. He growled in the direction of the door and stalked back to the bed, from the bed to the window. Then, with a howl of frustration, he threw himself against the closed shutters. He wanted to be out, out, like those long years ago.

She rose. There was a knife on her side but she’d hate to use it. If she had to, she’d stab him in his shoulder or in a paw, then run for the door. Now for her hands. She forced them to stop trembling, then closed her fingers around the iron bolt and pushed. If he’d leap against the door from the other side, she wasn’t sure that it would hold at all. But there was only silence. With a breath that, she thought, could be her last, she opened it to a crack, peered inside to see nothing but semi-darkness and a dark shape by the window. That’d be him. ‘Tudwrig,’ she whispered, ‘it’s me. I’m coming in.’ And she did, before she had the chance to doubt again. The door closed behind her with a groan.

With his hackles raised and a low growl in his throat, he emerged from the shadows and took a few steps towards the intruder, claws clattering on the floor. It was female, he could smell it. And it was - vaguely familiar. He shook his head and gave a howl.

She stretched her hands in front of her, palms his way. ‘Hush,’ she whispered, trembling from head to toe despite her intention to remain steady and brave. ‘You don’t have to remember who I am. But I’m here as a friend. I don’t want to hurt you….or that you hurt me.’

Something of a memory came drifting upwards, but he suppressed it with another growl and tensed every muscle in his body, ready to jump on the one between him and his way out.

‘Good,’ she said, her voice high and stretched. ‘Don’t jump on me, Tudwrig. I’ll tell you my name. It’s Briallen. I’ve come to keep you company….you’re lonely, aren’t you? Locked up without seeing anyone…’

Tudwrig, he'd shed that name when he'd shed his human form. It didn't mean anything to him, and her name and her voice didn't mean anything to him either. It needed to get out of his way or he'd sink his teeth in it. He licked his teeth with his tongue and narrowed his eyes dangerously.

She saw the curl of his lips and backed away, moving to the left, where the window was. ‘You want to hurt me, Tudwrig?’ she whispered. ‘I’m your wife, my love.’

Hurt, that was a word he understood. Hurt was good. Ripping soft flesh to bloody strips, burying his muzzle in - no! He yanked his head to the side and gave a plaintive howl. Briallen, help! He jumped backwards, growling and shaking his head. Violence, he needed the kill - no, he needed soft arms to hold him - and to rip to shreds! - to love him and argh!.

Briallen cautiously moved on to the bed. The sheets were messy. ‘You want to jump on me,’ she said. ‘I can see it. But there’s something stopping you as well. That’s the part I am married to.’ She sat down on the bed, her feet still on the ground. ‘And if you don’t rip me open today, perhaps we can lay here together sometime.’

Briallen... He felt the need to wound, to kill, run from him like dye out of a bale of cheap fabric. His claws dug into the floor, but it was because the beast was losing control and he welcomed the pain he could clearly feel now. Another howl, piercing through the air like the wail of a dying animal, and then Tudwrig was left lying facedown on the floor, gasping for breath.

‘Oh, Gods.’ She had prayed and begged for this, but never really expected to see him change before her eyes. She left the bed and slid down beside him, her hands running over his head, through his dark hair. ‘Tudwrig…’

He coughed, feeling for all the world like a drowned kitten, and buried his head in Briallen's lap. 'Did I.. do something to you?' he asked hoarsely.

‘Nothing,’ she whispered, ‘not at all. Don’t worry.’ She kept combing her fingers through his curls gently, comforting him like a weeping child. ‘Everything is fine.’
