Morcant didn't know what else to say, so he got a bottle from his bag instead, pressing it into Essylt's hands. It contained strong drink, but he figured that was what she needed right now, if only to get her warm. |

She looked to the bottle, feeling taken aback. ‘There’s more.’ She didn’t dare to take whatever was inside this jug. If it was strong, she wouldn’t be able to keep her tears away, and she wasn’t ready to cry yet. ‘The night before, someone stole into my room. Via my window.’ |

‘The man I spoke of. The one Gwyddien worried about.’ For some reason, she lacked the courage to look up into his eyes. Like she was confessing a crime. Essylt knew that she was not the guilty one, and yet she felt contaminated. |

Marcus Lentulus, in Essylt's room in the middle of the night. Morcant could do the math and a sudden burning desire to carve the man into tiny little bits and feed them to the dogs overcame him. It took him a while to calm down, then he took her face in his hands and turned it upwards. 'Essylt? Did he get what he was after?' If he had, Morcant swore he wouldn't rest until the man's body was dogfood. |

He was mad. The anger seeped from his somewhat uncontrolled touch into her skin. She lifted her eyes to his and whispered: ‘Nearly. More than nearly.’ |

He needed to think clearly. Falling into a fit of rage wouldn't help anyone. 'More than nearly, but not completely? What happened,' he pressed on, determined to find out how much to hurt the man before he killed him. |

‘I…I don’t think…’ Was she even obliged to speak of this in so much detail? To him, a man whom she hardly knew but for a few nights and days? ‘I couldn’t fight him,’ she struggled. ‘There was so much of this...’ she held up her hands. ‘I could feel it…it was beating through my body…I was afraid to let it out.’ With one of those hands, she wiped over her eyes. ‘I was undressed. Alright? He as well. He got that far.’ |

Morcant started swearing, his hands yearning to make that Roman bastard pay for this. He was a little oblivious to how much trouble Essylt seemed to have talking about it. All he could think of was the many ways of death which were open to him. Then he remembered she was still there, and how it must have been for her and he suddenly felt guilty that he had been less than considerate. He looked at her hands, those fingers that could leak ice like a river of death. 'Wait...,' he said, 'did you kill him?' |

For a reason she couldn’t quite explain, it felt good, like a relief, that someone cursed on her behalf. Essylt sat quietly as he uttered words she’d never really heard before. It had been a frightful event. She was still not calmed down completely. But it had not all been unpleasant, a thing she’d never admit in Morcant’s presence. He was still not afraid of her hands. This fact nearly made her cry despite not drinking of the alcohol. She shook her head. ‘I was about to. A part of me really wanted to. Yet I curbed it. He was hurt. Then he fled. But that’s why I must leave, Morcant, do you see? He knows it now. He’ll link it to what happened on the hill. And my brother is so vulnerable. I want to protect him…he lost his mother through me. All I can do now is leave.’ |

He felt a headache coming up, with all the thinking he had to do now. If Lentulus was in Two Lakes again, it meant he was away from Caer March, obviously. That in turn meant that Rhywallon hadn't caught up with the man. Why the Roman had returned to Two Lakes was anybody's guess, but Morcant was sure he wasn't here anymore. The fact that he'd sneaked into Essylt's bedroom at night instead of officially paying his respects proved that. He would probably return to Caer March, so if Morcant wanted to do some constructive killing, he had to go there too. 'I'm sorry that he's still alive, but it's good that you were able to control it,' he told Essylt. 'I'll take you some place safe as soon as you've rested.' But where was safe? He couldn't very well take her to Caer March, right back to Lentulus's lecherous clutches, could he? |

‘Good.’ She felt overwhelmingly tired now, that she had found a place that she knew could hide her from what family she had left. ‘I don’t care where. Just as long as I can’t be there to hurt father or Carwyn, or anyone of the staff.’ All she wanted now was to sleep, dreamless, harboured. |

'I'll take care of you, Essylt. Go to sleep, I'll stay awake,' he told her, gently. He'd take care of her, and kill anyone who even thought of hurting her. He promised her that much in silence. |

She wrapped herself in the cloak, putting her head to rest on the stony ground. It wasn’t comfortable at all, and the old cold seeped past the fabric of her cape, though it was warm. He was so willing to give up his current plans for her. Was his guilt really creeping up on him so strongly? She wanted to ask if it bothered him at all, but what if he’d say yes? She didn’t think she wanted to know, so she just closed her eyes against the sunlight that fell in brighter rays inside the cave. ‘So, it found you,’ she muttered instead. ‘The owl.’ |

He nodded. 'Couldn't see it, but I felt its wings.' He didn't tell her that she'd been on his mind ever since they parted ways though. She might take it the wrong way. |

He reached out a hand to stroke her hair. 'I know,' he said quietly. Gods yes; he could see it in her eyes and every movement she made, shy like a deer ready to bolt. 'I'll try and keep you as safe as I possibly can. Do you want me to make a fire?' |

She almost wished that he would hold her again, even if it was so tight that it hurt. She thought it would make her body remember that she was not alone this time, like a cage shielding her off for the great empty darkness that prowled at her. ‘If I dream,’ she said, ‘you must hold me. No. Do it now. I can’t sleep if you don’t.’ |

'You call, I run,' he said softly and gathered her in his arms as carefully as if she was made of glass. He was a little surprised that she allowed a man close, so soon after what that Roman pig had done to her. Well, it didn't matter now. Soon the culprit's blood would seep into the earth, and the world would be rid of yet another Roman. |

She had realized now how it made men feel if they touched her. It wasn’t something she had asked for, and she hoped that she would not feel from Morcant what she had noticed from Rufus’ body as he had laid naked on her, skin to skin. And yet – Essylt recalled that faint sense of revenge in that moment. Why had that been? The thought of the Roman’s caresses over her breasts and ticklish skin of her inner thighs made that she didn’t need a fire at all. Essylt closed her eyes harder, shutting them till it almost hurt. ‘Make me forget,’ she whispered. |

He would do it without a moment's hesitation, but he was afraid it was impossible. 'I'll make him pay a thousandfold for what he did,' he said into her hair. 'And I swear that I will never allow anyone touch you against your will again.' It was the only bit of comfort he could give her. |

'I -' The words got stuck halfway. Was there even a correct answer to that question? If he said yes, she might not want to sleep in his arms again, and right now it seemed the only thing that could really comfort her. Saying no was probably better, but what if she'd find out the truth later? 'I do,' he then admitted, 'but I won't.' She deserved a good man, not someone like him. |

Essylt nodded. A half of her felt flattered that she was desirable. Morcant, and even Rufus, had made her feel precious, like she was a special creature instead of just the daughter of a chieftain who had given up most of his power in the hands of Romans. ‘You are not afraid of what I might do to you with my hands, and they are cursed,’ she told him. ‘So I won’t be afraid of yours.’ |

Her words touched a nerve and he had to swallow a couple of times before trusting his voice enough to speak. Then he took one of her small hands in his, closing his fingers around it. 'I know you can control it. You just need to practice a bit.' |

'Then I will.' She relaxed her hand in his to confirm her own words. Her eyes felt so heavy now, but the sleep that was calling her had a sweet fragrant too. Perhaps it would not only be despair and nightmares. She sighed, knowing that she must be rested before they could go anywhere. She felt his chest move against her back everytime he breathed. She was aware that she was still punishing him for what he’d done. Not that she wished him harm, but she kept using him for her own needs. Wasn’t it a little cruel to make him hold her while he’d admitted to want her like Marcus Lentulus had wanted her? Still, he complied to all her wishes with a grace that humbled her, and it made her realize that he was no longer the only one who had tainted her innocence. She herself had done her fair share of that, now, hadn’t she? Soon, she drifted off. |

Morcant didn't stroke her hair like he'd done the last time she had slept in his arms. He thought that after her experience with that Roman bastard she wouldn't be comfortable with it. Either way, it was a good thing he didn't need too much sleep, since he had just very nearly ran for an entire day straight. There wasn't going to be much resting if he had to guard Essylt while she slept. Though if she wanted to make a habit out of this, he might need to think of something. But he could do that after she'd wake up. He'd suggest that they go to the Vale. If he correctly interpreted the look in Rhywallon's eyes when he turned to go back to Caer March, it would be highly unlikely that Lentulus was still breathing when they arrived. Though he'd have to be honest with her, and if she didn't want to go to the Vale, they wouldn't. |

Once, she woke up to have sunlight stream through her lashes. She heard the twittering of birds outside, along the rustle of wind through the many trees of the forest. The cave smelled of daytime, of green things. She wasn’t cold. Morcant’s arm rested heavily on her body, draped over the cloak like a force of gravity to secure her to the earth. Another time she woke, hearing a heavy rainfall. The sunlight had gone then, though the light was still clear. She turned, her face to Morcant’s chest and feeling the pebbles on which she lay. It wasn’t enough to pull her from the spell of sleep that still hung over her, and she closed her eyes again. |

When the rain started, it was getting difficult for him to stay awake. Rain had always been one of those things that helped him sleep, ever since he was a boy. Despite his best efforts, Morcant also started drifting off, his back against the cavewall and Essylt leaning against him. It was a nice sort of feeling, was the last thing he thought before he fell asleep. He awoke when the sunlight streamed into the cave again. Essylt was still fast asleep, and he made sure not to move. She probably needed all that sleep, and though his muscles were cramped from his head down to his toes, he motionlessly waited until she too would wake up. |

Finally, her body felt less like it was bound against a boulder to drag her down a dark lake. She blinked against the light, feeling her eyes were sandy from sleep. Her head had strangely cooled down, though she immediately felt a pang of sorrow, as though her body remembered all of the past events now it had woken up again. She looked up, finding she could see directly into his face. ‘I was sure it had to be night by now.’ |
