Both Cuhelyn and Morcant grinned, the latter a little less wide than he usually would.
'Sounds like a good sort of reunion,' Cuhelyn said. 'And a girl, eh? Sounds like fun.'

He glanced at Cuhelyn. 'You know me better than that, my friend. I hardly take advantage of young girls. Especially when they pay me to stay protected.' He thought about Gwenllian's kiss. How could a face like his make that girl so eager? 'She had spirit,' he added.

'I was jus' teasing,' Cuhelyn said lightly. 'Sounds quite the opposite of Morcant's little adventure, though.'

'Hm?' He kicked a branch away, just as he tried to rid himself of the memory of Gwenllian's hair. It was highly unlikely he'd be back in Caer March soon, and even less likely that she'd wait for him. He had told her not to. 'You had a girl? Well, your face is more pleasant to behond.'

'I think she was hardly interested in my face,' Morcant muttered.
'He kidnapped the daughter of the chieftain of Two Lakes because he was too lazy to scour around for information in other ways,' Cuhelyn said with a grin. 'Gwyddien didn't quite agree, so we just brought her back to her old man, none the worse for wear.'
Morcant simply grunted.

'Really? And what did you learn from her?'

'Names of the Romans stationed there, and the fact that this here high-up from Rome has been there to supervise settlements being built,' Cuhelyn answered. 'Goes by name of Marcus Lentulus. Sounds vaguely familiar to me, but Gwyddien was rather worried all of a sudden. Apparently, the man's quite the snake. Playing his politics in such a way he's the one pulling the strings behind the scenes - and quite the ladykiller I hear, too.'

His feet stopped so suddenly that it felt like a lightning bolt had struck him. Marcus Lentulus? 'Fuck,' he growled. 'That smoothtalking pig. I'm going back.'

'Wut?' Cuhelyn blinked, and Morcant was just as baffled. 'Why's that?'

He was already retracing his steps. 'Because I left Gwenllian behind while he stalks around the caer and settlement.'

'That Roman's somewhere else now?' Morcant inquired before Rhywallon could disappear alltogether. 'And you've seen him?'

'Yes, I have. He's settled himself nice and snugly into Caer March.' And no wonder, with the lord Tudwrig so ill that he could hardly keep control over his chieftaincy. The lady Briallen did her best, but the Roman had seemed like a man to enjoy struggling women.

'Hm.' Cuhelyn narrowed his eyes. 'Well, go save that girlfriend you're not taking advantage of, we'll tell Gwyddien about this.'

Rufus was getting rather restless, now that everything was going according to plan. The past day or two he had kept to his tent, granting Briallen a little breathingspace and himself some time to think, and he thought it'd be a good time to start putting some more pieces together now. So he got up, dressed himself in his finest toga and made his way to the caer.

It was a nice day; bright and windy autumn weather. Briallen looked out on the small herbal garden underneath her window, her hair billowing in the breeze. Perhaps it was a good time to go out today, perhaps with Tudwrig if he'd feel well enough. They had not done that since that last time, just before the building of the settlement. Wayland's Smithy....it had had a strange attraction on him.
She closed the shutters of the window, smoothing her hair into a loose plait. 'Braegne, remember my idea to repair the tapestries in the hall?'
'Sure I do,' her maid said, pulling straight the covers of her bed. 'But you've been so occupied with others matters lately...'
'Yes, well. I intend to ride out today. A bit of handiwork seems a nice distraction in the evenings, now that the season is progressing. Would you make sure they are dusted off well before removed from the walls?'
'Certainly, my lady.'
'Thank you, Braegne.' She made her way down, seeing Eiluned hurrying over the courtyard, her hands moving wildly to usher some serving maids into working. Briallen smiled. Finally she felt that this household had become her own.

The single guard at the gate was by now so used to his comings and goings, he didn't even hesitate to open the gate any more. Just as well, Rufus thought. It would've been such a bother if he had. The courtyard much resembled a beehive of activity, with servants scurrying all over the place and the elderly Eiluned guiding everything smoothly. He walked up to the woman and announced that he would like to talk to the lady of the house, if possible.

'Indeed, my lord. She must be up by now; it is not lady Briallen's habit to sleep in long.' Eiluned put her arms behind her back and turned around. 'I will see if I can get her for you. If you'd be so kind to wait.'
She ventured inside. Briallen was just descending the stone stairway. 'Lord Lentulus is here to see you, my lady.'
Briallen sighed lightly. She really did not feel like Romans today, but the lord Lentulus was, she had to admit, a special case. 'In the courtyard? It is very windy, have him come inside and I'll receive him.'

'My lord?'
He looked up as the older woman returned.
'The lady will receive you inside, so if you'll please follow me.'
Rufus nodded and fell in step next to her. Once inside, he thanked Eiluned and walked towards Briallen, making a sweeping bow as he halted before her. 'My lady,' he said with the most charming of his charming smiles.

She looked down on him, but remained seated on her fur-draped stool, a decorated cup in her hands. 'Yes, my lord? You have come early to see me.'

'I like to rise with the sun,' he said and took his place on the bench he was accustomed sitting at. 'Might I inquire as to your husband's health?'

She sighed. 'Thank you, but it is much the same, I'm afraid...Fine for a few hours, then it strikes again. It's never...certain. Never quite quite safe. For him.' She looked up. 'But this can't be the reason you have come to see me.'

'Partly, it is,' he said. 'I couldn't help but notice that because of your husband's illness, guarding the borders of the chieftaincy has been slightly neglected. I hope you'll forgive me the criticism, but you have far too many men. I came to offer my help in this, by providing you with soldiers and a solid security.'

'It is better to be safe than sorry, I believe,' Rufus said ernestly. 'And with our settlement here, I do feel it is as much my responsibility to protect those within your husband's chieftaincy as it is his.'

She put down her goblet, folding her hands in her lap. Her fingers clenched together. 'So, you are suggesting you...take over this duty from us?'

'Oh, no, I wouldn't dream of that,' Rufus said with a slick smile. 'I'm just talking about taking care of it while your husband is incapacitated.'

'I see.' Briallen bit on the inside of her cheek. Had she been foolish to neglect these matters? Oh, with everything that had turned her world upside down, she had completely forgotten about military issues! It was humiliating to be reminded of this, by a Roman no less, the people who had invaded her country. 'You're right. This is unacceptable.' It had actually brought a blush to her face out of shame. 'You understand that this is...not exactly my territory, my lord. I'm not the right persons to make such decisions. But in absence of my husband - I believe...I must.'

'I shall of course provide you with all the information concerning the dispersion of my troops, my lady,' Rufus said, not showing any of the satisfaction he felt on his face. 'And I promise the Vale of the White Horse will have nothing to fear from any neighbouring chieftains that might think of expanding their territory from now on.'

She had to force her fingers to relax and to pick up her cup again. 'Thank you, then.' Briallen offered him a smile, as genuinely as she could. 'You've shown great goodwill to our lands and people, especially in our current difficult situation with my husband, lord. Don't think I am ungrateful when I sometimes seem absent.'
