'All right. I'll think of a plausible explanation for your father.' Cuhelyn looked over at Morcant. 'I'm inclined to tie you up and tell them that I've caught their daughters kidnapper, you know,' he said, though his voice was starting to loose its edge. Morcant still had some coming to him, but with the way things looked now his guilt was giving him quite the run for his money.
'Go ahead, I don't care,' Morcant answered.

'Don't,' Essylt said. The resignation in his face and voice made her feel a string of pity. 'Leave him be, Cuhelyn.'

'Sorry,' Cuhelyn sighed.
Morcant lifted his shoulders in a shrug. He deserved no less, but he was glad that Essylt had stood up for him. Perhaps he could earn her forgiveness in this lifetime after all. 'Pass me the plates, will you?' he asked in a neutral tone of voice and started dividing the food between them.

The first time was spent in silent eating. After the last quiet dream and then only the darkness of a deeper sleep, her body felt rested and content. If only her mind could feel the same. Essylt moistened her lips. 'I promised Gwyddien that I wouldn't tell much about you.'

Cuhelyn nodded at that. 'What did you want to tell your parents? We'd best get our story straight before we bring you back.'

But she shook her head. 'You don't have to do anything more. Just bring me to where you took me from,' she looked at Morcant. 'I can find my own way back after that.'

'Not with all these Romans swarming all over the place, you aren't,' Morcant said curtly, but Cuhelyn put a hand on his arm.
'If that's what she wants, then we gotta listen to her.'

'The Romans,' she said rather sharply, 'know my face. I have walked there all my life and the only time something ever happened to me was....' But his face had changed again and she couldn't speak further. 'I - I will be fine. I promise.'

'...All right, then,' Morcant said, thinking about the dream. What if that would come to pass? Shouldn't he be there to try and prevent it?
'I think Essylt's stronger than you give her credit for, Morcant.' Cuhelyn's voice was slowly going back to the quiet, humorous inflections that were so adept in lightening any mood.

Essylt shrugged. She didn't say that she no longer feared attackers. She had seen what she could do with them, after all. Perhaps Cuhelyn was right, she was stronger than anyone would have thought. There was a power in her that carried that force, at least. She only feared herself, for using it. 'My father will put two and two together if you accompany me. That's mostly it.'

Cuhelyn nodded thoughtfully. 'We'll accompany you to where Morcant took you, then. Any particular time you'd like to go, or is now as good a time as any?'

'Right then.' Cuhelyn got up, closely followed by Morcant, and they started packing the tent and blankets, shoveling loose soil over their fire. When everything was gathered, he looked around the little site one last time.
'That way,' Morcant said, jerking his thumb over his shoulder. 'It's not far from here.'

She wanted to say something to make that hard line by his mouth disappear, but couldn't think of what. It was best for both of them, she thought, that they'd never see each other from now on.

He hated the thought that he'd never get a proper opportunity to make up to Essylt in full, but there was nothing to be done about that. Besides, the best thing he could do for her now, was make sure she got home. So they walked in silence to the spot where he had first met her. Morcant halted in his tracks and licked his lips.
'Are you sure this is as far as you want us to come?' Cuhelyn asked.

'I think it's best for all of us,' Essylt said, feeling slightly uncomfortable. Morcant looked rather pale, too. She wondered what he was thinking: disappointment that she had ruined his wild plan? 'So...'

'Stay well, Essylt,' Cuhelyn said, putting a hand on her shoulder before walking a ways off. Morcant scratched his beard.
'I uh, I know it's probably not something you wanna hear, but I really am sorry for..everything,' he said, his hand dropping to his side again.

She stayed silent for a while, watching as his hand dropped down helplessly. Finally she repeated the words Cuhelyn had asked her to: 'Stay out of trouble.'

'I'll try,' he said and even managed half a smile. 'Can't promise anything, though. Well...goodbye, then.' There was one thing he regretted more than anything right now, and that was that he hadn't the opportunity to slit the throat of the Roman she'd been promised to. The thought of lecherous old fingers touching her was enough to make him really, very angry.

'...Farewell, Morcant.' She didn't wait for him to walk away first and slowly turned around. A part of her wanted to run back to the caer, another part needed to postpone the moment as long as possible. She didn't have a real story. She had no energy left to make one up. And what would she find there? A Roman, wanting to betrooth himself to her as soon as possible. Essylt wanted to bite her lip, but found it was still bruised from last time.

He swallowed a couple of times, trying to ignore all sorts of feelings running through his body. Then he turned around and stalked back to Cuhelyn. He grunted at the man's questioning glance, not trusting his voice to speak. His friend understood and started walking next to him in silence.

The gate of de caer swung open even before she had time to knock or shout out. 'Lady Essylt,' the guard said, 'your parents...by the dear gods, please hurry back!'
'Yes,' she muttered, 'yes, of course..'
She found her father in the smaller hall, a goblet in his large hand. He was pale, shaking. She could see it from the goblet, where wine spilled over the rim. 'My daughter!'
'Gods,' she whispered. 'Father!'

'What're you gonna tell Gwyddien?' Cuhelyn asked quietly, breaking the spell of silence.
'The truth,' Morcant shrugged, 'that I've been an idiot.'
Cuhelyn bit his lip. 'He's not going to be pleased.'
'So be it.'
Somehow, he didn't like the thought of this. Morcant had suffered a lot already, Cuhelyn could see that. His friend looked like he didn't sleep at all the last few nights. 'I wouldn't mind covering your arse, ya know,' he then said lightly. 'Been doing that ever since I met you, anyway.'
'There's no need for that.' Morcant flashed a grin at him, though it wasn't his old grin by far. 'I'll live.'

He had been on the road for a while now, leaving Caer March far behind him. Rhywallon looked down on his hands as he brushed the thicket aside. The last night with Gwenllian had been a surprise. She had felt very soft, very hot, against these hands, where he had expected nothing but the sensation of warm blood. He'd told her he had to leave afterwards. She hadn't cried or complained. Instead she had given him the sweet scent of her hair on his way.

They went on their way early the next morning, neither man needing a lot of sleep to function. If they pressed, they'd be back in camp shortly after nightfall. Morcant couldn't honestly say that he looked forward to it.
'Did you hear that?' Cuhelyn's voice snapped him out of his reverie. Straining his ears to listen, he could discern very faintly something that sounded like the careful footsteps of a brigand, or a soldier on patrol. They stopped in their tracks and looked around.
Morcant was on guard the moment the bushes rustled in a way that couldn't have been caused by an animal, or the wind. But instead of a foe, Roman or otherwise, the last man he'd have expected to see around here stepped through the underbrush.
'Well, that's a face I thought I'd never see again,' Cuhelyn said. Morcant looked curiously at their brother. Rhywallon's face was as impassive, as unreadable as he remembered.

'Never mentioned anything about disloyalty,' Morcant answered with a shrug. Rhywallon had always been snappy and curt, and he'd be the last to think anything of it, what with his own short temper.
'Distraction, eh?' Cuhelyn interjected. 'You can tell us all about that while we walk.'

He was silent for a bit, falling in step with the other two. 'I needed to escort a girl to a place of safety,' he said then. 'On the way, I had the pleasure to run into two...old friends. They have been taken care of.'
