'Wild horses couldn't drag it from my lips,' Gwenllian said, a little surprised at the force of Briallen's grip. 'I'd sooner die, I swear to you.'

'Good.' She released her.

Gwenllian tried to smile, to think of something to say, but she felt like there wasn't much she could say, let alone anything to smile about. 'Speaking of the Roman, perhaps I should go and see him before he starts to get impatient.'

'Of course.' Now that she had told someone, the need to shut herself in het chambers had lessened. 'I will go with you. It's only proper.'

'I'd hate to face him alone,' she admitted with a faint smile. 'Sometimes his eyes aren't quite right.' She got up and walked to the door, opening it.

'Lord Lentulus.' He had been waiting in the hall, as he'd said. 'I believe you wanted to ask Gwenllian some questions as to your inquiry. Go ahead.'

Rufus nodded his head at the two girls and stepped aside, holding out his hand. 'We might as well make ourselves comfortable while we're at it,' he smiled.

Gwenllian sat down on the bench in front of the hearth she was accustomed to be sitting. 'Ask away,' she said quietly.
'Have you been inside the caer all night, last night?'
She shrugged her shoulders. 'I couldn't sleep, so I decided to take a walk.'
The man's eyebrows shot up. 'Alone?'
'No. Rhywallon accompanied me, as is his duty as my bodyguard,' she answered, well aware that this made them sound awfully suspicious. But the best lies were those covered in a lot of truth.

'Gwenllian is a chieftain's wife,' Briallen put in, her voice low. 'And our welcome guest.' There was a warning there.

Rufus held out his hands in a gesture of aplogy. That was new. Gwenllian certainly didn't act as though she was married. 'I have told you that I treat everyone on equal footing, my lady,' he said in a tone Briallen could not possibly take offense to, 'especially in a situation as this. That means asking everyone the same questions.'

'It's quite all right,' Gwenllian said softly. 'I've nothing to hide and I do not mind telling this.' A silly thought entered her mind: between the two of them, she and Briallen could quite possibly give Marcus Lentulus a hard time. He certainly didn't look too happy to hear that she was married also.

Briallen sat down on another bench, closer to the fire. She did not want to interrupt the interrogation and wondered if she was pretending things. Perhaps the tension between Tudwrig and herself had made her all to suspiscious to other people. The Lord Lentulus - or, Rufus as he preferred to be called - was a Roman, that much was undeniable. But he tried to act amiable.

Rufus smiled carefully and looked back at Gwenllian. 'Did you come near the settlement?'
'We walked past it,' she answered, 'but we did not see nor hear anything out of the ordinary.'
He wasn't sure what to think of this. On one hand, if she or her bodyguard had comitted the murder - with her bodyguard being the more likely suspect -, she wouldn't be telling him that she'd been outside. She'd have claimed to be fast asleep, or at least that she was inside the caer all night. On the other hand, if Rhywallon was the murderer, she could be holding him a hand over his head by providing him a watertight alibi. In either case, it brought him jack shit. 'Where is your protector now? I should like to question him too.'
'He left this morning,' she said without missing a beat and with nothing in her voice betraying any sort of nervousness. 'After our walk, he told me that he'd gotten word concerning his sisters and that he would like to go on an extended leave of abscence. We discussed the business-aspects of this until dawn.'
Rufus licked his lips. This was getting him nowhere at all. 'That would be all, then. My thanks for your patience, my lady,' he said.
'I'm glad to have been of help.'

He recognized a polite request to leave when he heard one, so Rufus got up and bowed to the two girls. 'I shan't bother you any longer. If you need me for anything at all, please send word to my tent.' And with those words, he swaggered away.

When the door had fallen shut behind him, Gwenllian breathed a sigh of relief.

'I'll get Braegne get us some warmed mead,' Briallen said, taking up an embroidery she had left laying about. 'And pray tonight that no other disasters may follow.'

'Yes,' she said, but her mind was not in it. Nothing was going to have settled itself when she woke up tomorrow.

When Essylt hadn't called when it started to get dark, Morcant got up and started looking for her. Perhaps it wasn't such a good idea to let her go off by her own. She had grown up in this chieftaincy, and though they were far from her father's caer, she could have chanced running away. But that wasn't at all like the girl, since she had promised to do what he wanted of her and as far as he knew, she kept her promises. When it grew increasingly darker, he started to get more worried and more cranky. Eventually he found her sitting on a flat boulder near the stream, arms wrapped around her legs and staring off into the distance. It was quite cold, but she wasn't wearing her cloak. 'Essylt?' he said quietly.

She hadn’t heard him coming up to her. Now she moved; her neck felt stiff from cold. Her lips were cold too, and they made her speak slower. ‘You.’
But then, she thought as the stupor slid off her a bit, it was reasonable that he would come to find her. ‘I’m sorry. I lost time.’

'You're freezing,' he said after touching her shoulder; she felt like an icicle. 'We gotta get you warm. C'mon.' He held out his hands to help her get up.

‘That’s a bit ironic, seeing what I am,’ she mumbled, but after a while she allowed him to heave her up. There was a nauseous sensation, not just in her belly but through all of her body.

'Don't be ridiculous. You're as human as I am, which means you need warmth or you'll die.' He wrapped an arm around her shoulder, half and half afraid that she might shatter to pieces if she stumbled and fell.

Yes, and freezing to death was obviously only meant for the Romans. Essylt pushed her cold lips together and thought that if she fell ill now and died, at least it would prevent her from becoming the murderer he saw in her. But in truth, she thought forlornly, I don’t want to die at all. The thought of it terrifies me. ‘Right. I’ll go to the cave with you.’

He led her back, walking slowly. The fire had nearly gone out again, but he quickly raked it up and fed some new logs to it after setting Essylt down in front of it and draping a cloak and a blanket over her shoulders. Then he dragged the little makeshift cooking-rack over the fire to warm up the thick soup he'd made that afternoon.

She watched him moving about in silence, feeling pulled down into the earth by the heavy layers of cloak and blanket.

When the soup had warmed up, he handed a rather large bowl of to Essylt. She hadn't eaten since she'd went to sit by herself, and he thought she must be starving. He didn't want to see her wasting away. 'It's nothing fancy, but at least it's warm,' he told her.

She hadn’t felt like it for most of the day, but now that the scent of the food hit her, Essylt noticed how hungry she really was. ‘Thanks.’ She ate all of it, nearly burning her mouth but not caring much.

'Don't mention it,' he shrugged as he himself started emptying his own bowl. All of a sudden he had to think of Cuhelyn and his near insatiable hunger. It made him moody to think of his friend, since he missed him, even though he would not admit to it when asked.

The heavy fabrics draped over her and the glow of the flames did not drive out the cold that had settled in her bones. Essylt shivered, and shivered again. Peeking underneath the cloak, she saw her arms full of goosebumps. If she'd really fall ill, would Morcant let her return home to recover?

'Getting warmer yet?' he asked after another long spell of silence. He wondered what had made her return to her paramount silence.

'A little.' It wasn't so much the cold that bothered her, Essylt realized. Cold was just cold, and seeing as she froze things to death with her mere touch, she probably deserved it. But there was this sense of seclusion, as if she was in a cage and the rest of the world moved outside.
