Red & dangerous! Rawr!
'You should sit down first, you're trembling like a leaf,' Gwenllian said and led Briallen to the edge of her bed, looking around for something to poor her water in. 'Does it have something to do with the tribune?' she asked.

'Him? Oh, no.' She sat down, feeling the bed move beneath her weight. What she would give to be here together with Tudwrig, alone. 'I nearly forgot he was there everytime he shut is mouth. He's going to ask you about Rhywallon,' she added then, looking sharply at the girl. 'I don't suppose he was...in a position to commit a crime that particular night.'

Gwenllian stopped in her search for a cup and water, and looked at Briallen. 'Yes, I thought he might,' she said, a faint blush colouring her cheeks at Briallen's next inquiry. 'Actually, that's what I wanted to talk to you about,' she continued more quietly and sat down on a wooden bench at the foot-end of the bed. 'I feel that you should know, and your husband too. It eh, it was Rhywallon who killed Marcus Iulius.' Her voice had dropped to a mere whisper and she let her head hang.

‘I know.’ She pulled up her legs beneath herself. ‘Tudwrig granted him permission.’

For a couple of moments, she could only blink. 'He did? Oh.' She ran a hand through her hair. 'Well. In that case I don't have to worry about lying a bit to our lord Tribune.' And here she had thought that Rhywallon had only had one reason to kill the Roman... 'Can I ask why lord Tudwrig has?'

She squinted her eyes at the girl. Because the man was a pest, making our own troubles even the more sour, she thought. And because Tudwrig knew he could not stop an assassin from sinking his teeth in his prey. Because my husband would not protect a live. And I can’t blame him. ‘With his illness….’ It was hard to find the right way to say this. Briallen hesitated. ‘It’s not easy….the man was sickening our lives bit by bit – yet that’s not to say that my husband asked for this,’ she interrupted herself. ‘I think the Roman was to be a prey at any cost.'

'That he was,' Gwenllian admitted, wondering where the consternation in Briallen's eyes came from. 'Marcus Iulius... did some terrible things. Rhywallon wanted justice.' It had just been a very harsh sort of justice. Despite the rest of that night, Gwenllian still couldn't help but shiver at the memories of the Roman face, cut to shreds... 'We're well rid of him,' she added then, and forced a smile to her face.

What did this girl know? Had her bodyguard confided in her so deeply? Briallen searched her face, but found that she did not want to know. ‘I’ll say nothing more on the matter. Be assured that I will not betray him, for as much as that is worth.’

She could breathe a little easier at that. 'I'll be telling lord Lentulus that Rhywallon was with me all night,' she said then. 'He will have no reason to suspect him any further, and with a little luck he will not press the matter.' Gwenllian looked into Briallen's pale, wan face. It looked like she was on the verge of crying. 'Do you want to talk about what is bothering you?'

'All night,' she agreed and felt an agonizing string of jealousy. She quickly got up and found the water jar, filling two decorated tin cups with the clear liquid. 'Gwenllian. You had an...unusual journey with an unusual man before arriving here.'

'You might say that,' she murmured and took the cup from Briallen, folding her fingers around it and lowering it in her lap.

'No doubt you have noticed that our household in Caer March is not quite like other chieftain's households. Not anything like I've known, before I was dispatched her to marry Tudwrig, at least.' She turned around, the water in her cup swirled.

'Yes, but I thought nothing of it considering your husband's illness,' she answered, not feeling it was her position to criticise other households when her own hadn't been all roses and moonlight.

Briallen smiled, bleakly as a winter’s faint sun. ‘I’m trying to love Tuwdrig. It is…increasingly hard and also... increasingly painful.’

So that was why her eyes sometimes looked like pools of inifinite sadness. Gwenllian thought she knew how it felt to be in Briallen's position, what with Higueid's violence. It was just that Tudwrig did not seem like the type to talk with his fists. 'Is he..unkind to you?' she asked quietly.

Unkind?’ She sank down on the bed once more. She had nearly spilled her drink. ‘Ah, but you must have gotten that impression when he sent you away. No. When I say I love him, I mean it. It’s that…it seems that…my lord is cursed. With his disease.’ Lowering her gaze, she wondered if she’d get closer to admitting the truth than this.

Gwenllian put her own cup down, got up and seated herself next to Briallen. She was glad Briallen wasn't in a similar position as hers, but she could imagine that this disease was really hard on the both of them. A curse - yes, she would view it in the same way. 'I'm really sorry for that,' she said and slipped an arm around Briallen's shoulders. 'I take it there isn't a cure?'

'If there is, we haven't heard of it,' she said bitterly. What could she say? Braegne knew the truth, but she was the only one she had confided in. Eiluned was here before herself, she didn't count. 'Do you plan on staying her permanently, Gwenllian? It seems your Rhywallon has bought you that permission with Tudwrig.'

Gwenllian lifted her shoulders in a shrug. 'I don't really know... It depends on you and lord Tudwrig, whether you need me to help or not. If not, I will only stay a couple of months at the most.' That's how long she thought it'd take Higueid to get bored looking for her. Then it'd be safe to travel on.

She drank her water, buying her time. 'Tell me first if you want to stay. It can be lonely here, with not much people around.'

'I want to stay. I don't mind loneliness as much, not with everything that has happened before,' she said, though she had an incling that with lord Lentulus around, they'd have no time to feel lonely.

She nodded, still postponing the moment she would have to say it. I don’t have to. It’s no obligation. But if she wanted Gwenllian to remain safe…And if she herself wanted to remain sane – ‘Our lord the chieftain Tudwrig suffers from a curse since he was young,’ she said, nearly breathless. ‘You may have wondered why the door you found me before was bolted. That’s the reason.’

'Cursed?' Gwenllian repeated, trying to wrap her mind about what she'd just been told. A shiver of superstitious fear ran down her spine, though she tried her hardest not to let it show. Briallen seemed to have the worst of times with it on its own. 'May I ask what kind of curse?' she asked after a moment's hesitation, not sure whether she really wanted to know the answer.

She felt heavy on the inside. ‘You may…But I find it hard to explain.’ There was a silence. ‘Whenever it’s said that he’s suffering from headaches, retreating into his room, he is in all honesty…not in his own form or mind. He becomes….quite without mockery – a beast.’

'I see,' Gwenllian heard herself say, her voice perhaps a little more high-pitched than usual. She thought she'd seen the most terrifying thing when she watched Rhywallon kill, but now it paled in comparison to being married to an honest-to-god monster... She suddenly understood what Briallen had meant that it was difficult and painful to try and love Tudwrig. Wordlessly, she gently squeezed the other girl's hand, wanting to convey something of support to her.

'Why shouldn't I? I don't think there is a reason for you to lie to me.' Because if Briallen wanted her gone, she wouldn't have said that she was welcome. 'It's a bit mind-boggling, I'll admit, but I've heard so many strange and wicked things lately...'

'This man. Marcus Lentulus...he must not find out.' She bowed over to Gwenllian, taking the girl's hand rather forcefully. 'Not ever, or I'm afraid he will ruin what is left of us.'
