Red & dangerous! Rawr!
He was certain this wouldn't end like their weddingnight: his body made that quite clear. Tudwrig entangled his free hand in her hair, leaving her lips to kiss the soft skin of her neck. Then he lifted her up in his arms to carry her to the bed, laying her down on the tangled sheets. 'I love you,' he whispered, his fingers trailing down her neck to the soft swell of her breast.

The comformation of his words awakened a strength in her chest that Briallen hadn’t known before. It was like a waterway with coursing speed, or a bonfire on the nights of celebration. Her head fell back but she drew him between her like the two halfs of the banks embraces a river.

It came like an assassin in the night: his breath suddenly caught in his throat just as he was pressing his lips against her shoulder, his fingers fumbling with her tunic. Tudwrig groaned and pulled back, trying to get his breath back but it was like an iron band had closed around his throat. The next moment it felt like his head split open. Please, not now...

'What's wrong?' She opened her eyes. He was hovering over her like he had suddenly frozen. His face was distorted, his lovely dark curls framing disaster. Briallen fought for a clear breath. He was still over her - if he changed now, and she had the beast between her legs, how long would it take for her to die? She struggled to her side, slipping under his left arm. 'Please, Tudwrig, don't...I love you -'

He fell on his side, breathing heavily and squinting his eyes shut, as if he could make it go away somehow. If only... It felt like revenge, wicked, insane revenge for thinking he could have happiness. 'I can't hold him much longer,' he panted, 'run...'

She ran, past the bed on which he lay moaning, like dying from a fatal wound. The door went open smoothly and she closed it, bolted it, leaned against it trembling and shaking. Her hair was a mess. Her cheeks must be flushed, but her eyes felt swollen. Now it was silent on the other side. Whoever had prepared this door for lord Tudwrig’s rooms, it had been a good choice, for it let nothing in or out. Not even the merest hint for her to hear that her husband was alright.

There were only two more people he needed to question: Gwenllian and her bodyguard scarface. It was peculiar that he couldn't find either one of them ever since he had seen the girl drift past him in the hallways, and it made him wonder. Rufus walked through the long corridor, pushing doors open in hopes of finding a clue as to what might have happened. He was getting thoroughly fed up with this whole thing by now. No one in this damned caer had seen or heard a thing, and so far no one was missing but those two. And Tudwrig, but Rufus found it hard to believe that a man in his state, unable even to consume his marriage, could kill a man that brutally. He rounded a corner and stopped in his tracks when he saw Briallen leaning against a door, looking dishevelled and desperate.
'My lady,' he said, quickening his pace until he was next to her, 'are you all right?'

Oh, sweet Epona of the valley hills. Briallen closed her eyes, then snapped them open to turn them on the Roman tribune. The last man she wanted to see today. She still felt awkwardly warm over all of her body. ‘Nothing to worry about,’ she answered curtly.

There were roses in her cheeks and her breathing went a little quicker than was normal, he noticed. But her eyes were also swollen as if full of tears threatening to spill. Rufus looked from her to the door she was leaning against. He could hazard a guess as to what had happened, with the information he had gathered from Braegne. 'My apologies,' he said slickly, conjuring up a comforting smile. 'I was perhaps a little overly anxious for your well-being.'

She raised a hand, smoothening her hair back as casually as she could. He would find it odd that there was a bolt on this door; it wouldn't do pretending that this was merely a storage room. 'Why is that, my lord?'

'With this whole tragic event,' he said gravely, alluding to Iulius' murder, though it might as well be to the fact that she hadn't as of yet shared the bed with her husband. 'I imagine it must be a terrible burden on you and your husband.'

Oh, that was right. She’d nearly allowed herself to forget. ‘Well, that – that is tragic,’ she agreed, gingerly moving away from the door, ‘but the murder happened in your camp, so to speak, my lord. We have our own…burdens.’

Apparently, they did. The smile slid off Rufus's face. This was vexing; a perfect opportunity to unleash his charms on her, perhaps the most perfect he'd ever get, and she looked as though it would all just slip right off her, as if she was made of crystal or ice. 'Please tell me if there is anything I can do,' he said nonetheless, 'anything at all, lady Briallen.'

Gwenllian stared into the crackling fire of the hearth, flames licking the logs laying there. She wondered if wood felt pain, like a man could. Rhywallon had left well before dawn, without wasting many words as usual. As soon as the shadows of the courtyard had swallowed him, she knew she'd probably never see him again. She wasn't yet sure whether she hated the thought or felt that it was for the best, though she'd spent almost the entire day thinking about it. Well, about that and other things, too. If he could find peace now, for instance.
A servant brought her a cup of mead, as she'd requested. She wasn't hungry at all, despite not eating all day. All around her she heard the buzz of servants discussing the discovery of Marcus Iulius' death, and the lord Lentulus asking them all questions. Gwenllian couldn't help but feel a little nervous about that. What should she say if he started questioning her? An outright lie, or a partial truth? She wasn't comfortable with either one, she realized. But even if he didn't question her, it'd be very suspicious that Rhywallon had left without anyone having seen him since dinner - not counting herself.
Perhaps she had to tell Briallen? That seemed like a big risk to take... Oh, stop fussing so much. Gwenllian's chin came up. Even in the highly unlikely event Briallen would tell Lentulus, Rhywallon was gone and he could take perfect care of himself. Still, she might as well give him as much cover as she could. She needed to find the Roman and tell him that she'd been outside that night, with Rhywallon, but that they had not seen nor heard anything out of the ordinary. The instant she made that decision, she got to her feet and nearly ran into the halls. She'd seen him stalking around the caer, she thought - couldn't remember quite clearly, because her mind had been so occupied with recollections of how it felt to have Rhywallon's hands run over her body.

There was something in her voice that made him hitch his smile back in place. It was almost as if she was challenging him, and Rufus never turned down a challenge. 'Ah, if that was improper of me, I beg your pardon, my lady. But you quite stole my heart with your warmth and kindness.'

'...That's kind of you,' she said, not feeling like she had been warm to him at all. 'Oh, I have one request. Or rather - it's more like an order, if you'll allow me to be so bold.' It wasn't a question. 'I just had a good view on the settlement. It reaches almost till the Blowing Stone. Don't let it pass on now, lord Lentulus. That is holy ground.'

'As I've promised, I have put a stop to the expansion of the settlement,' he said coolly, correctly, and his smile somewhat dampened. No matter his previous efforts, he'd had the right to be a little put out with her curt behavior right now.

'Right....You said that.' She looked the other way. Part of her wished she could press her ear against the door and listen. But it was better that the Roman had no idea of what was on the other side. Swallowing, Briallen took another step away from the door, bringing her closer to the Roman. She hated the thought of him standing there. What if he got too curious with all this investigating? 'I'm sure you would prever another place than this corridor to speak.'

'I'm comfortable to speak with you everywhere you are comfortable, my lady,' he said quietly. She seemed nervous. What was there in this corridor she didn't want him to find out? Perhaps she did know more about the death of Iulius than she'd admitted, though she had looked genuinely surprised when he told her.

'Then do allow me to accompany you there,' he said, careful to voice the offer in such a way he could talk his way out of it should she take offense to it. Sometimes he wondered if she wasn't a little too oblivious to his subtle hints and gestures. You just never knew when dealing with a married woman - or a virgin. Both, in this case.

Just when she thought that she had to venture into the Roman settlement to find lord Lentulus, Gwenllian nearly ran into him - and Briallen, who looked distinctly uncomfortable. 'Oh, beg your pardon,' she said and stopped in her tracks. 'I hope I didn't disturb anything.'
'Not at all,' the man answered easily, though his eyes told a whole other story. It was gone in a second, however, leaving Gwenllian to wonder if she had been mistaken about what she saw.

'And I have been looking for you, lady Gwenllian,' Rufus said with a slick smile. It was just as well that she had decided to show up now.
'Yes?' she inquired politely.
He nodded. 'There are some questions I would like to ask you.'

Gwenllian moistened her lips, looking over at Briallen. She really looked as though she'd had a terrible day. 'I see. I shall be happy to oblige you, but first I'd like a word with you, my lady,' she said while turning to Briallen. It was probably best to talk with her first before facing lord Lentulus. She had the right to know, after all.

Briallen nodded. 'Privately?' Oh, the man would not like it, she thought. Sometimes there were things behind his eyes that told her of darker things.

'If it is possible,' Gwenllian said with a nod, somehow feeling her intrusion was more timely than she'd first thought.
'I shall be in the Hall, then,' the tribune said. 'Ladies.' He bowed a little less flourishingly than she was used from him, and turned around to walk away.

'I'm...It depends,' she replied, shutting the door of her room and turning around to face Gwenllian. Braegne wasn't here and she was still shaking on her feet. 'On how much you'd care to know.'
