'I -' she shut her mouth again and frowned. '...no, I suppose not.' Deep breaths, that was the key to calm down. He had calmed down, too. 'But aren't you going back to the caer?' |

He had meant to find a place outside, to crawl up and wait for the last bits of rage to seep out of him with the rise of the sun. Rhywallon sighed, moving his hard shoulders because they hurt. ‘I will go.’ He held out his hand – his soiled hand. ‘You’re going to refuse me now?’ |

'No,' she said, a little braver than she actually felt, and slipped her hand in his. It was a strange sensation, but not quite unlike touching someone whose hands were simply wet. |

He stared down on her. Her face was caught in the moonlight, bright as a fey of the Good Folk. Rhywallon swallowed something that tasted of iron. His own blood, then? He had bitten on his lip or the inside of his cheek so hard that his skin had broken. Silently, he led her up the hill to the caer. |

She wondered what would happen if anyone saw them, stealing back to the caer in the moonlight like this. There'd be talk, she guessed. She didn't really care. All she cared about at this moment, was the pain she'd seen in his eyes. If there was a way to take it away, she would've done so without a moment's hesitation. |

He spoke only when they had reached the courtyard through the small side entrance for supplies. There he turned to face her. 'You've seen me at my cruelest.' He couldn't say he was sorry. It would be a lie. |

'I know the reason,' she answered quietly. She couldn't say it was all right, because it wasn't, but she didn't mind as much as she would have, had it been a random act of cruelty. |

'I couldn't sleep, and I saw you sneak out. I thought you were leaving, but when you made for the settlement I thought... My curiosity got the upperhand,' she admitted ruefully. |

'Don't even do that again- Gwenllian.' He had not meant it, but saying her name felt as if he had spoken a spell, a charm. Suddenly his tongue didn’t just taste his own blood and bitterness anymore, but also the flavor of her name. Of her small hand that had taken his, though smeared with fresh blood. Of those eyes, big in the moonlight, that had looked to his face and not drawn back. He swallowed again, not sure what to do with the feeling that surged through his body. The sensation was so akin to that which he had felt earlier, the rush of the kill – and yet… ‘Gwenllian,’ he said again, and oh how that word blazed in his mouth! – ‘You had better get away from me right now.’ |

'But - why?' She took a step back nonetheless. Over the weeks she'd travelled with him, she had learnt it was best to do as he said. But there were so many things she wanted to say! That he had saved his sisters, no matter what the Roman had said, for instance. 'Rhywallon?' That look that suddenly burned in his eyes, it made her heart beat faster, but it wasn't the fearful throbbing it had been before. |

‘Because,’ he said, hearing the raw, hoarse edge to his own voice, as if he had been drinking too much. It sounded all the louder against the silence of the sleeping caer. ‘I might do something you’ll find disgusting once your pity has worn off.’ |

'Don't...,' she said quietly, 'don't say that. You make it sound like I'm here just because I pity you.' Oh, she knew what he meant. She just didn't know whether she would find it all that disgusting if he did. Torn between running for her room and staying right where she was, Gwenllian took another little step back. |

‘Yet you’re backing away,’ he replied. He had heard once that most soldiers rape women after the conquest of a territory. He understood why now, with his body still burning and seeking other ways to let it all out. There were more shadows inside this countyard than on the road up the hill, but he could still see enough of her shape to know what was underneath that dress. ‘This. It scares you.’ He put a hand to his face. ‘As it scares everyone.’ It even scared himself sometimes. For what kind of demon-face had he acquired? And had he grown to be more like such a demon over the years? |

'No!' she said, shaking her head. Her chest was heaving. 'No... It did at first, but not anymore.' And to prove it she did something she knew was stupid and ridiculous, and probably very dangerous too; she walked towards him and put her hand to his face. Something hot and moist ran down her cheek. 'It's a brave face, Rhywallon...' |

She shot lighting through his face. His breath caught in his chest like a coiling snake, he pressed her against the nearest wall. It was barely less than a throw. ‘You didn’t,’ he breathed, ‘hear me in full. Brave. You heard the Roman. He said no.’ And with that he pressed his hot mouth against hers, seeking something that he knew he wasn’t going to find there, or anywhere down her waist or in the swell of her breasts, where his hands wandered to. He bit down somewhere in her lower lip. It was impossible to be gentle. These hands that had only just killed a man and ripped his skin apart could not find a way to touch her lightly. His lips, also, felt too hard against her own. He wasn’t even sure if she was flinching; all he could feel was his own need. The wolf, come back to hunt. |

Even though she'd seen it coming, it still took her a little by surprise. She wanted to say to hell with what Romans said, but all she could get out between kisses were little gasps and silent moans. Higueid hadn't often kissed her and when he had, it wasn't spectacular either. Not that she was so very experienced, but this was just incredibly different. He bit her lip, but it didn't hurt. All she felt were little wavelets of a tingling sensation in her abdomen, spreading through her body like ripples in the water. Was that lust? His hands were all over her, seeking only the gods knew what. There was one thing she was sure of: she preferred this over Higueid's bored, correct manner when he slept with her. Gwenllian entangled one hand in Rhywallon's hair, pressing herself against him. |

Her response. There was a response, and it wasn’t the whimpering of a duckling, as he had anticipated. Something pressed against him and he realized it were her own hips. He needed breath. Drawing back before he’d explode, Rhywallon looked down on her. Everything about her face was flushed and as lovely as he had ever seen. ‘Not so disgusting?’ he managed, voice caught between a pant and a cough. ‘Last chance. Won’t hold back another moment if you don’t run away now.’ |

'I don't care,' she said with burning cheeks. Gods, she wanted him with all her body and soul. She could still smell the blood on him, mixed with his sweat. It was a strangely arousing smell. 'And you did save your sisters,' she finally managed to say before she smashed her lips against his again. |

She had been crying before, so it could very well be her own wet strains that he felt against his cheeks as she kissed him. It was good that the shadows covered most of his, now. Her words set a vibe to his heartstrings. If she said so, perhaps it was true. Perhaps. |

Rufus looked down on the body, hands folded behind his back. If the man hadn't been wearing the breastplate and girdle of a legionaire, he would have had a hard time identifying Iulius: there was almost nothing left of his face, and his throat was slit nearly to the neckbone. It was a good thing he had a strong stomach, or he would be doubled over like the soldier who had discovered the body, wasting his breakfast. With a sigh, he scratched his forehead. Even dead the man didn't stop bothering, because now he'd have to start an investigation. 'Why couldn't you just have died of a heart-attack, or poison?' he asked the dead body, not really expecting an answer. Well, whoever had done this must've really had it in for the man. The only interesting aspect of this murder was that it was remarkably similar to liquidations in the shadowy world of crime - the type of murder Rufus had often seen and even committed a couple of times. It was meant to strike fear in the hearts of whoever had associated himself with the victim. Only one question remained: who was responsible for it? Rufus thought he had a hunch, but evidence was scarce. He gave orders for the body to be removed and prepared for the funerary rites, then made his way to the caer. |

Briallen walked over the courtyard alone, glancing into the grainery. Now that she no longer had to give more than half of it away to the Roman camp, she felt confident about the winter. There would be enough for the small household of the caer, and rations to spare in case om emergencies down the settlement. It would have been easier if Gwenllian had been around to help with the calculating of portions, but she hadn't seen the girl all day. |

A servant pointed him to the courtyard, a little intimidated by the stern look on his face. Rufus strode into the open court and quickly spotted Briallen, who was checking the granary. When he reached her, he made a short, formal bow without the usual flourish. 'My lady, might I have a word?' |

She turned around before he had spoken, hearing the footsteps that were too different from Eiluned's or Gwenllian. The lord Lentulus had lost some of the boyish gleam in his eyes, or at least was keeping his face shaped in a solemn expression. 'Is something wrong?' |

'Quite wrong.' He glanced over his shoulder. 'Might we perhaps talk in private? I know it's not proper without your husband present, but this is a very serious situation,' he said gravely. |

Briallen blinked. 'We can talk in the hall. It will be quite proper.' With an odd look at him, she moved from the courtyard to the fireplace in the great hall, gesturing to one of the fur-covered benches. |

Rufus sat down and waited until Briallen had taken her place too. 'I'll cut right to the point, my lady. Marcus Iulius has been brutally murdered last night,' he said in low tones. |

For a while, it was impossible to draw up any words at all. She stared at the man, her mouth trying to say things her voice did not let go. Briallen brought a hand to her lips. 'Murdered?' |

'I'm afraid so,' he sighed. 'A soldier discovered him in one of the unfinished houses in the settlement this morning. I will have to start an investigation to find the culprit who did this, and I will have to question the people of your household too.' Rufus shook his head ruefully. 'You and your husband are clear of all suspicions, of course, but I have to ask you if you have noticed anything unusual?' |

Briallen leaned back on her seat, almost as if she wanted to step back from him and leave. 'We have a very limited household...Small enough to know nearly all of the people under my command personally,' she said with cold lips and a weaker voice. 'And no. I have not noticed anything...more out of the ordinary.' Except for her husband's curse. She swallowed. 'Is it rude of me to suggest that he might be victim of a brawl?' |
