She was tired. And she felt mildly sick. But she didn't want to sleep yet. 'I don't get you,' she said, meeting his eyes when he tugged the blanked around her shoulders. 'You're kind. Then you're not. Then you are again.'

'If it makes you feel any better, I don't get myself either.' Morcant shrugged. 'I guess it's easier to be kind around a girl like you than it is around a group of battle-hardened brigands all expecting to die soon.'

He hadn't moved away. She thought of Cuhelyn and what he had said. Keep him out of trouble. 'Do you expect to die soon?'

'I'd give my life for my brothers, if need be,' he said quietly. 'Which doesn't mean I would risk yours.'

'I didn't mean that,' she answered. 'I know you don't want me dead. I've seen it.' But she wondered how he could speak of his plan like he had, and still expect to die young with a sword in his back. Did he even believe himself? Did his brothers believe in themselves?

'I'll try to explain. With the Romans gone, my brothers will be safe. If I die in the process, I'm okay with that. But I can't bear the thought of any of them, or you, or any one of my people falling victim to Roman swords.' He said it quietly, but meant it nonetheless.

She tried to laugh, but it was more like a shaking of her shoulders. How was she supposed to keep a man with such ideas out of trouble? She felt bad for Cuhelyn. Morcant had also betrayed his trust. 'You can't...kill all of them,' she said as quietly as he. 'You're just one man, Morcant.'

One man with a mad idea, yes. But mad ideas were exactly the ideas that just might work. He didn't need to kill every single Roman in Two Lakes: assassinate a higher up, and they would be confused. Kill a couple of their generals, and they wouldn't know what to do. Get rid of any Roman that had anything to say whatsoever, and the rest would run back to Rome. 'I might surprise you,' he said quietly and smiled.

Her hand felt weak in his. He was apparently determined to approach her that way. It had been shocking that Cuhelyn had kissed her on the brow. But it was like their talk: crude and almost uncalled for, something she had been protected from all her years. Now that she was starting to get used to it, she found that it hardly offended her. 'I'll try,' she said again, as weakly as her fingers lay in his grasp.

Morcant wouldn't have thought it possible that there could be any girl so overpoweringly feminine, and so much in need of protection, but here she was, sitting in front of him. It made his mind reel and hate himself at the same time. For a moment he was overcome by it all, and without thinking he put his hand to her cheek, stroking the lily-white skin.

Essylt wasn't sure what he tried to convey. Was it simply guilt? The hairs on her skin prickled. His hand was warm, and she was cold, despite the blanket. But she also felt cornered, like a deer surrounded by hunters. 'I'm promised,' she whispered.

'That Roman pig doesn't deserve you,' he said hoarsely. But then, neither did he. He'd kidnapped her, scared her out of her wits, and now he was going to use her for something so foul that he - Morcant pulled his hand away as if he'd burned himself.

Essylt started from his sudden movement. She stayed quiet; what was there to say to such a thing? That it was not her choice to be married off to a man nearly as old has her own father? Or that wanting or deserving had nothing to do with it? And did Morcant feel so strongly about the Roman, or did the frequent gestures mean more? She thought he couldn't hide something else. It wasn't affection, like Cuhelyn. She did not think he was a person to show much affection, nor to make friends easily. 'Then what do you want?'

He ground his teeth together. 'I - to know what I want. Because gods help me, I don't.' Morcant turned his face away from her. He'd never been a person to show his emotions like this, but Essylt shook everything he thought he knew about himself. He wanted to protect her, take her, bring her back to her parents unharmed, press her against him - he just didn't know.

He didn't say it. He didn't need to. She hid her shaking hands in her lap, where she hoped he couldn't see them. Perhaps she should tell him that she was sorry. For what she seemed to have caused within his camp. Within him. 'It would have been easier if you had brought me home. I would have disappeared from your life.' She did not mean it as an accusation.

'Life isn't easy,' he said, looking back and drinking her features in as if she was the last living thing he;d see on this earth. And perhaps she would be, too.

'No. I suppose not.' Not for someone like him or Cuhelyn, she thought. All good men, wasn't that how he had put it? And yet deserving prison, fighting for their lives, struggling to protect something that was slipping from their hands within the count of heartbeats.

'I'm sorry I have to make yours hard, too,' he said before getting up and turning around. He couldn't bear looking at her anymore. She was so frail, so much like a delicate flower that would wilt when not taken proper care of... It was more than he could handle.

'You really do mean that, don't you?' she asked, looking at his back. Turned around like this, he made a bitter impression on her.

She shook her head, not sure with whom she was more sorry: herself, feeling so lost in the web of a man eho wanted more than he could possibly achieve, or him, a man that knew he would die before reaching his forties, acting against his better judgement, thinking he deserved prison. 'Then why do you make yourself suffer like this?'

'Because it's better that only one man suffer instead of many.' Deep in his heart he knew he wouldn't stand a chance with this folly, but he wasn't ready to admit it yet. He simply had to try, or he would think about what if... for the rest of his life.

'Not one man,' she said quietly. 'There's Cuhelyn...' She thought of the cold words Morcant had cast his way this morning. It was easier to understand now, but it had not been needed. Would he have been envious?

'Cuhelyn will have forgotten about it in the morning.' And it was better this way. Cuhelyn might brag about how utterly he did not care about dying, Morcant knew that it was in fact bothering his friend at times.

'And you won't.' A gust of air travelled inside the cave. She drew up her shoulders from cold, tugging the blanked closer around herself.

'Like I said, better one man than many.' Or was it simple egoism? Could it be that he was no better than Elgued, wanting Essylt for himself? Morcant gnawed on a knuckle in frustration.

She wished she could make sense out of him. He had hurt her, and made her feel like something precious and rare. She leaned against the stone cave wall. It did not provide her with any warmth. The cold leaked right through the blanket. It was not even night and she felt like she had covered herself in her own ice. 'I'll try to sleep now.'
Though how, she wasn't sure.

'I'll be on guard. Call if you need anything,' Morcant said after a few deep breaths to get his control back. Then he strode to the entrance and tugged at the bushes covering it. Perhaps it was best to cut them down and light a fire just outside the cave. It was pretty chilly, and if he felt cold he wondered how bad it would be for Essylt.
