'Good. Then perhaps, in exchange, we can share some of our own.' She rose from her chair. 'I'm rather tired now. It was a long day for me.'

Rufus got to his feet, smiling. 'I bid you a good night's rest then, and you as well,' he said to Briallen and then to Gwenllian.

Tonight, I can be home, was the thought that Essylt woke up with. They were half a day, perhaps a little more, away from Two Lakes. She imagined a familiar smell in the air already. Now and then she had recognized landmarks when they had looked down on the road ahead from a hill. That peak, over there - she could see it from the hill left of the caer as well. And in the distance two shimmering waters that gave Two Lakes its name. She crouched out of the tent, bushing her hair back and dusting her skirt. It was still early, but she felt wide awake.

Morcant licked his lips, looking at Essylt. Cuhelyn was asleep still, rolled up in his blanket in front of the last embers of their fire. 'Morning,' he grunted, looking away again. There was an anticipation in her face he knew he would have to shatter soon.

She greeted him back, sitting herself crosslegged before the remains of the fire. It was chilly. He looked as closed as ever, perhaps a little more. Was he resenting to let her go? After all, it had not been his decision.

He cut her some bread and meat before prodding Cuhelyn awake with his toe.
'So... we're nearly there, huh,' he said because he really didn't have anything else to say. Cuhelyn muttered something, to which Morcant only reacted by prodding him even harder. 'Get up, lazybones.'

'Yes.' She watched as he kicked Cuhelyn rather roughly until the man growled and sat up straight.

'Wuzwrong?' Cuhelyn asked, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
'Your sleepingpattern, that's what's wrong,' Morcant growled. 'Anyway, get your things together. You're going back after breakfast.'
His friend was suddenly wide awake and staring at him. 'Beggin' your pardon?'
'You heard me,' he said. 'I can take Essylt back on my own from here. After that I gotta get back to gathering information, don't I?'

She just finished her last piece of bread and now blinked from Morcant to Cuhelyn. 'You're just going to continue spying at us?'

'Not at you, the Romans. Besides, it's just a single day's work, really. So there's no need for Cuhelyn to waste his time any longer.'
'If it's just a day, I might as well stick around,' Cuhelyn objected.
'Gwyddien said that you only need to accompany us to bring Essylt back,' Morcant started to explain patiently. 'I don't need babysitting on the way back.'

Essylt frowned. 'I don't really understand it.' But then, what was it to her? It was clear that Morcant made the decisions around here, so she simply shifted to pull her legs to one side. She'd be home within a day and it was unlikely she would ever see any of the men ever again.

Cuhelyn gave a snort. 'Fine. Whatever.' And with that, he began shoveling food down at topspeed. 'But I'm not dragging the tent back, you can do that yourself.'
'Fair enough,' Morcant said. He didn't like being like this to his friend - though in all honesty, it wasn't so very different from his usual behavior. After breakfast, Cuhelyn got up and slung his bag over his shoulder.
'Well Essylt, it was my distinct pleasure to have met you. Gonna miss you, girlie.'

'Wait!' Essylt sprung up, as he looked ready stalk off without another word. She didn't understand why Morcant was being so cold to his friend, but she could see the hurt in his face. Now she stood facing him and wasn't sure what to say. 'Will you be careful?' she managed. 'Don't throw away your life for heroics too lightly, okay?'

'Don't worry your pretty little head about me, I'll be just fine,' Cuhelyn said, forcing himself to smile. He had a bad feeling about this, but he had learnt that it was better to let Morcant have his way when he was like this. 'Keep him out of trouble, will you?' he added quietly and put his hand to her cheek. Then he bent forward and gave her a peck on the forehead.

She looked after him with a mixture of surprise and worry. His hand had felt rough against her cheek - a warrior's hand; yet he had been gentle. Now he turned and was gone in an instant, swallowed by the dense trees. Essylt closed her mouth; it had been open to say something, something like how she could possibly keep men like himself out of trouble. But he had not waited to hear it.

Morcant had packed the tent and kicked sand over the remains of their fire, erasing all traces of their presence there. 'You done saying goodbye?' he called out to Essylt.

'Yes.' She turned around, the slight frown back in place. 'Why were you being so cold on him?'

'Gwyddien requested I send him back as soon as possible,' he said, 'and Cuhelyn wouldn't have gone if I asked him nicely. He has taken quite the liking to you.' Morcant didn't even attempt a smile; he knew it would look unnatural.

There it was again; such a look that made her think of thunder in the summer. 'So?' she asked, moving her arms in a helpless gesture. 'It's only half a day more.'

'You heard him, he wanted to stay until I had the information I needed. Cuhelyn is my brother, but he's incredibly dense and he would've gotten in the way. Now let's go.'

'Oh, fine.' She shrugged it off, telling herself again that from this evening on, she would never see or hear anything from these men again. She started to walk in the direction of the caer.

He walked in front of her, every now and then bending a little more to the left, leading her away from the caer. His face grew darker with every step. It was the right thing to do, he knew, but was it all together fair to have decided this on his own? Little girls weren't warriors, but Essylt had formidable strength, even though she didn't realize it herself.

Two hours had passed ans she looked up to the sun. 'I think we're too far west,' she suggested uneasily. He hadn't spoken at all.

'This is the route we need to take,' he said tersely. She would realize soon that he was leading her someplace else. Morcant found he didn't look forward the moment she would, because it would also be the moment he had to tell her that she wasn't going home for a long while.

She felt an uncomfortable chill, especially when the owl rushed by in perfect silence, soaring so close over Morcant's head that she was sure he must have felt something. Another hour passed in silence. Only the fowl returned every now and then, as if it was uneasy. 'Are you really sure...' she began.

'Quite.' He pushed bushes out of their way and veered even more to the left. They we're going in a wide circle; so wide he hoped she wouldn't notice until they were too far away for her to escape.

Now and then she watched the sun move through the sky. It became noon, then past noon. The forest seemed unending. She hadn't seen familiar places for a long while now.

Near the end of the afternoon, he finally halted in front of a lowhanging bush and pushed it aside to reveal a crevice leading to a small cave. He nodded to himself, then turned around to Essylt. She looked fragile, pale as she was, and with a worried look on her face. 'I'm sorry,' he said simply, 'but this is as far as we'll go.'

He grabbed her wrist and pulled her into the cave, though he tried his best not to hurt her. He was going to have to do plenty of hurting of a different sort as it was. 'Now that I've seen what you can do, I can't let you go. I'm really sorry,' he repeated, 'but Cuhelyn was right: we're fighting a lost battle. But with you... I might be able to turn the tides.'
