'What? Do you mean it?' She stared into his face, but he looked honest. 'I don't really know what happened to change your mind. Did you tell her?' |

'I wanted to speak to you first, I don't know how long I'll be in control,' he said with a somewhat pained smile. He felt all right now, but he could never predict the curse. 'And I mean it, honestly.' Tudwrig reached out to take her hand. |

'That's...that's good of you. I'm really glad you decided that.' She looked down to their hands. He never really tried to caress her, or do whatever it was that husbands did to their wives. She wondered if he considered her more a friend than a beloved. |

He really wanted to kiss her, but he had the feeling that she was still put out with him. Tudwrig stroked the back of her hand instead, not really sure what to say to bridge the silence that hung between them. |

'Tudwrig,' she said hesitantly, voicing a thought that had been wandering around for a while now. 'Do you...when you are that beast...do you think? Like a human?' |

'Sometimes,' he said quietly. 'Then it's like being a prisoner while my body does things I do not want to do. More often, I don't think at all but simply act upon whatever urge the curse makes me have.' |

'Is it always killing?' She had gone to whisper, even though her door was closed and no one would be listening to their conversation. 'The urge? Would it not...given time...come to recognize someone?' |

'Not always, I think. It can be mindless destruction or howling to the moon, but I don't often remember...' Tudwrig raised his shoulder in answer to her other question. 'I really don't know. I recognized you, but that was when I was partially in control already. I've never done anything to Eiluned under the curse. She's been with me since boyhood, maybe that is the reason.' |

'You let Eiluned in while you where like that?' It was ridiculous to be jealous about a thing like that, but her voice sounded sharp. If the elderly servantwoman could brave Tudwrig's curse, then certainly she, his own wife, could. Briallen straightened her back. 'I don't intend to be subject of misfortune,' she said. 'If you want me to stay by your side, you'll have to allow me some sense of rebellion.' |

'I didn't,' he said quickly, 'not in ten years. But when it was all still new, before I really fully knew what was happening, she saw me a couple of times. I..I can't really remember, but I think I recognized her. I didn't hurt her, in any case.' Tudwrig looked away. Why was it that everything he said only made matters worse? It was frustrating. 'I really do want you to stay with me, Briallen...' |

Tudwrig said nothing, but wrapped his arm around her shoulders, ready to pull away the instant she made known she didn't want him to touch her. |

Something went through her body that felt like a shudder, or like music without sounds. Together was good. Together she thought she could find a solution to the hovering shadowds of the Romans. What had the man said? His superior, and she'd like him. Well, perhaps he thought she was so gullible, but Briallen did not believe that there was a Roman who could lead her from the path she decided to follow now. - Essylt found a quiet spot at the very edge of the makeshift camp. She couldn’t see the men from here; though she was sure they would come after her soon enough if she wandered off. Escape wasn’t on her mind now, though. She sank down between two ash trees, her legs pulled up in front of her. Something had happened to her. It had started on the day Morcant had pulled her from her safe environment. Did that mean something? Was it because of him that she was suddenly confronted with the eldritch all around? She thought not. Dreams of flying, of owls with large amber eyes, had followed her since childhood, yet they had disappeared when her dear sister had died in the forest; soon after, she’d had her first moon cycle. Now she had flown again last night, and the owl that had started her so seemed to be recurring. Essylt spread her hands in front of her, studying them. If she could make frost come from her fingers, was that a fickle thing she could never control? She picked up a leaf, recalling how she had felt on the moment that she had seen Cuhelyn’s burn. Something tingled. A fragile silver coat spread over the leaf. She dropped it, chewing her lip. If they owl came to her whenever she did something like this, would it come whenever she wanted to do it? She spied around, but saw nothing at all. ‘Come to me then,’ she murmured. ‘Show yourself.’ For a few moments she did not dare to look up. Then she heard a soft rush, the flutter of feathers, the beat of wings against air. The owl landed on her knee like a breath. Her own breath was caught in her throat. |

'So let me get this straight,' Mocant growled, his mind reeling. 'She burned you by accident, and then she made the burn disappear with her bare hands?' Cuhelyn nodded seriously, his usual grin nowhere in the vicinity. 'It sounds insane, brother, but 'tis the truth.' 'But... how?' 'Her fingers were freezing. And I don't mean just cold, either. Really freezing, like lumps of ice.' Cuhelyn continued, but Morcant was already somewhere else with his mind. He remembered the patch of frost in the forest, the look on her face and the icy feel of her fingers. Something truly uncanny was going on here, and he wanted to know what it was and how it could have happened. The most logical thing to do would be to go to Gwyddien, and tell him - 'Huh, what did you say?' Cuhelyn rolled his eyes and punched him on the arm. 'I asked if you were still with me. Your eyes sorta glazed over, like you were gonna pass out or something.' |

'You...what are you?' Essylt sat motionless as the owl blinked at her sleepily. She had never seen eyes so light and silvery. 'Are you one of the Good Folk? Have you come to show me...' yes, what? She didn't know and the bird gave her no answers. Gingerly, she reached out a hand, expecting the bill to snap into her fingers any moment. The owl hardly gave a sign though. She saw the gentle rise and fall of his breast, so close had it perched on her legs. She stroked the feathers. The touch seemed both real and eerily otherworldly. 'Is it you who makes me do these things?' she asked. 'And the thing in the water...was that real?' |

'I'm fine,' he grunted, rubbing his arm. Cuhelyn had caught him off-guard. 'Was just thinking.' 'You and thinking?' 'It happens. By the way,' Morcant continued, quickly changing the subject, 'Lentulus is or has been in Two Lakes. Essylt said so just now.' His friend's eyebrows nearly disappeared underneath his hair. 'What's that git doin' here?' 'Dunno,' he shrugged, 'solidifying his powerbase, most likely.' Morcant got up. 'I need to talk to Essylt.' |

'It scares me,' she whispered. By now she had realized that the fowl would not speak to her in any language she knew, but it was a comfort to confide in it. 'I don't want any of this.' |

He walked towards Essylt, who was staring fixedly at her knee. He had promised to give her a moment alone, but he really needed an explanation. When he was within her hearing distance, he coughed. 'Mind if I join you?' |

As transfixed as she was, Essylt had heard nothing but her own heartbeat and voice. Now she cringed, as if a sudden arrow had hit her in the chest. The owl shot up, landing on the branch of an opposite tree where it continued to gaze down on her. Her heart was racing and she was breathing quickly as she turned her head, looking up to Morcant. 'You scared me.' |

'No, I am sure.' She sighed a shuddering sigh and looked up. He didn't seem angry, or was he simply trying his best to keep his face neutral? 'It hasn't happened before. All of this...it started when you kidnapped me.' |

He licked his lips and tried to find a reason why his kidnapping should be the cause of this. Perhaps the shock? But he hadn't heard of any occassion where a shock could make girls leak ice from their fingers. 'I see.' Morcant frowned and tried to straighten out his jumbling thoughts. His brothers were generally a superstitious lot - something he wasn't free of himself - but there was a vague idea forming in his mind... 'Perhaps it's best to keep this to ourselves, yes?' |

'I wasn't planning on telling it,' she answered tightly. 'Actually...it's not just that. I - sometimes I see an owl. It was here just now, but you didn't see it. And when I looked into water, I saw..a thing.' |

'An owl? No, I haven't seen it.' Which was strange, since he had kept his eye on her almost all the time and couldn't remember any sort of bird in her vicinity. 'What do you see in the water?' |
