She looked over her shoulder briefly, but he wouldn't return all the way to the lake. A man of the group, he could probably walk around naked without anyone sparing him a second glance. Essylt turned to Cuhelyn as Mocant moved away. 'So this is loot, huh.'

'Oh, a merchant lost it on 'is way from the marketplace. We just picked it up, is all.' Cuhelyn led the girl back to Morcant's tent, where she could change her clothes while he stood on guard.

'Hmm. I'm sure.' She meant it lightly, not caring to make a fuss about stolen clothes now that they had so kindly been provided. It was a relief to strip off her clothes, although she folded them with care. They were her sole reminders of home...But that was not where she was right now. Essylt turned her back to the bundel, spreading out the new garments. The tunic was blue like a robin's egg, made of fine quality. The heams were decorated with nothing but knotwork, a simple design, but it stood out well against the fabric. The skirt was made from a rougher cloth, but it fitted well and everything was clean and smelled nice. She stepped outside again, where Cuhelyn was. 'I like them.'

'That's a relief,' he remarked, 'it took me a while before I found something blue. Morcant was very adamant when he said blue. Nearly threatened to slit my throat if I didn't get him blue. Which reminds me, you should have a cloak too. It'll be a while before our gruff friend returns from his swim, so you can look through the things we've got yourself. It's not like any of us wears ladies' cloaks, anyway.'

Essylt blinked. '...Why blue?'

'He got a good look at your eyes, I imagine,' Cuhelyn grinned. 'And it does suit you, if I may be so bold. Here, this way to our wardrobe.'

Essylt licked her lips, but did not mention Morcant again. Instead she picked out a simple cloak that would protect her from wind and rain. 'You do not have to dress me up as if I'm the daughter of the High King,' she muttered. Right now she hardly cared about looking beautiful. If these men looked at her when she'd been dusty and windswept, how much more unwanted attention would that bring her now? Morcant was not back when they returned to the lonely fire, close to the tent. She wondered why he had to take so long, though she did not quite mind a break from his solemn stare. The fire was nothing more than a smouldering mass of coals. She poked at it with a fallen branch.

'Tis his way of saying sorry, I imagine,' Cuhelyn said with a little shrug of his shoulders. 'Can I get you something? Food, drink, anything?'

'Something to drink, maybe. I don't really need so much.' She sat down on the lump where she had sat between the two man the previous night. Sparks flew up as she poked the stick in the ashes, but their brightness died in the rays of the sun.

'All right, be back in a jiffy.' Cuhelyn got up and got a flask of water and two cups from their makeshift kitchen. He carried these back to Essylt as quick as he could. Unlike Morcant, he had a little more faith in his brethren, but didn't like to leave her alone for too long a time anyway.

'Don't worry,' she said, faintly smiling as he sat himself down. 'No one even approached me.'

'I'm more worried what would happen to me if Morcant found out I let you alone,' Cuhelyn said jokingly and poured her some water. 'There you go.'

'Is he your superior?' Essylt drank the water perfunctionally, staring it the burning cinders, twisting her branch round and round. She heard the fire hiss.

'Nah, just stronger than I am. We're all equals here, 'cept for Gwyddien. He's sorta our leader, but you must've figured that out already.' He looked as she played around with the stick and the fire. He wouldn't really expect that from a girl who looked like she was all snow and ice.

'Tell me,' she said, not looking up. 'How many lands of our people have you already freed from the Romans, you and your brothers?'

'...None as of yet, but we haven't been at it for very long yet,' he shrugged.

'Well, I suppose there's -' There was a sudden flutter in the corner of her eyes. Next moment, a grew, black-spotted owl rushed from the sky, straight downwards as if he was plummeting into the fire. Essylt's hand jerked back so wildly that the stick she had been holding flailed about. It hit something before she released it. The owl opened his wings at last, surging up just before the tips of his feathers caught flame.

Cuhelyn filled the air around them with sulpherous curses as the stick landed on his arm, the red-hot wood scorching his skin. It touched him for hardly a second, but it was enough to leave a scald of at least two inches. Still cursing, he grabbed his cup of water and chucked it over his arm.

Cuhelyn's voice snapped her out of her shock. The owl had vanished - by now, she doubted that it really had been there at all. Turning on the man, she pressed a hand to her mouth. 'I'm so sorry! - Cuhelyn, I'm sorry!' She reached out, taking this arm in her hands. There was an angry red mark. 'So sorry...'

'It's nothing,' he said between clenched teeth and curses. 'Don't worry. Just gimme that bottle o' water.'

Her fingers where trembling as she moved them down over the burned skin. He told her to get the water. Her eyes searched down, but snapped up before she could fetch the bottle. Something was happening. The skin that was fiery red took a milder shade; not quite as it had been, but rather like a single coal in a dying fire, diminishing within the time of a slow breath. 'Oh...I...this is -' Her fingers felt really cold again, just like before when Morcant had rubbed her hands till blood had surged painfully back into her fingertips.

'Crap..in a bucket,' Cuhelyn said as his arm suddenly started to go numb with cold; a cold that seemed to originate from Essylt's fingers. The burn was disappearing before his eyes... impossible! How could that be? His mouth dropped open as he looked from his arm to the girl, who looked just as shocked.
'What's going on here?' Little drops of water splashed to their doom on the grass next to them, dripping from Morcant's hair. There was a incomprehensive scowl on his face as he looked at the two.

Essylt released and stepped away from Cuhelyn as if she had burned herself - though rather the opposite had occured. She said nothing at all, couldn't even look at anyone.

'Oh, burned my arm,' Cuhelyn said easily, though he was still confused. 'Essylt poured water over it. I'm fine.' He'd tell him later, when there were less people who could overhear them. This was really uncanny. Scary, even. The part of him that was superstitious wanted to stay away from the girl from now on, but Cuhelyn's curiosity was stronger.
Morcant narrowed his eyes a bit. 'Hm. Well, Gwyddien's ready to receive us now.'

Essylt looked to the ground. 'Just...just give me a minute. Or no - I'll come with you right away. And Cuhelyn, sorry. I didn't mean it to happen.' She was not sure whether she meant the burning or the ice. He could figure that one out himself.

''sokay, dearie,' Cuhelyn said with a brave grin. Morcant lifted his shoulders in a shrug and led Essylt to Gwyddien's tent.
'Elgued's gonna be there, too,' he told her. 'Thought I'd give you a head's up about that.'

Her hands really looked nothing out of the ordinary, Essylt thought, looking down on them as Morcant walked her to the tent. She barely heard his words, but managed to nod. 'I'll be alright.'

He pushed the tentflap aside and stepped into the tent. Elgued and Gwyddien sat around a small, rather rickety table.
'Sit yourselves down,' the older man told them. 'Drink?'

'Not for me,' she said, sitting down. Now was not the time to think about what had happened. Nor of the owl, that she was sure Cuhelyn had never seen. She stroked her new skirt straight as she sat down crosslegged on the comfortable fur. It was easy to study both men from this position. Where they perhaps family? Gwyddien and Elgued shared the blue tattoos. Then again, tattoos where not uncommon for warriors.
'That colour becomes you very well, Essylt,' Gwyddien said.
She nodded as thanks.

'Very well, indeed,' Elgued remarked with a look in his eyes Morcant didn't like at all. He glared at him from across the table.
'We're not here for small talk,' Morcant grunted.
'Patience, Morcant. It's a virtue, you know,' Gwyddien said.
