'Should I even be seeing your face?' she asked.

'I'm telling you my name too, aren't I? If I felt the need for secrecy, I'd have knocked you out from the start.'

'Doesn't it matter to you if I tell them who you are, what you look like? Not even to the Romans?' She didn't mean it as a threat, but realized he might hear it as one. Essylt looked down.

Morcant gave a short, barking laugh. 'I'm pretty sure you won't get the chance for that,' he said and grinned at her, though she probably wouldn't see in the darkness.

She shrank away from him. So he was threatening her after all? It occured to her that he had never specified in what condition he'd bring her back. And it was likely that his brothers, the other rough men she would not care to assosciate with, would harm her. Essylt had to swallow several times, wishing she could disappear beneath the earth. Timidly, she said: 'I...I see.'

He leaned back against his tree, putting his hands behind his head. Why was she still so scared? He'd told her she wouldn't be harmed and returned to her family when this was all over, hadn't he? It was probably a girl's thing, he knew a few who were afraid of tiny insects - the kind that is easily squashed under a heel, even. He pursed his lips and looked at the sky, of which only a portion was visible under the thick canpoy of leaves, as if he could will the sun to rise early that way.

No, but he hadn't hurt her. He seemed to try to be friendly, at least. She might as well make use of it. Carefully she leaned back, crouching within a closer distance so that she could see his face through the gloom. 'Why do you hate the Romans so much?'

'Because they're leeches. They might bring all this 'wealth' and 'civilization' with them, to use their own words, but they're bloodsucking, thieving and murderous wretches. Why conquer entire nations? Why not leave us in peace?' He licked his lips and scowled at an unoffending bush.

'Hmm.' She recognized the bitteress in his words. She had heard it from some of the other chieftains, before the invasion started. 'The Silurii fight over it, that's true.' She wondered why she'd bother talking to him. It might be best to seal her lips the entire way, but knew she wouldn't be able to bear it. 'Are you of the Silures, perhaps?'

'Yes,' he remarked simply. Some of his brothers were, too, but then, there were men from almost every tribe, so it wasn't that special.

She knew that her father respected the Silurii warriors for their fire. 'I see.'

After that first question, he noticed Essylt showed promises of falling back in silence again. Morcant wasn't the talkative type himself, though not quite as silent and stoic as one of his brethren he could name. 'So... that's all you want to know? My name and where I came from. You're not very inquisitive, are you?'

She shrugged and looked at him. 'What more do you want me to ask? I've always assumed that the more we know, the more we'll be in danger.' She paused for a bit. 'I didn't think you'd be interested in talking about a lot of things,' she added then. 'I'm just here so you can execute your plans.'

'I've nothing to hide from you, since my intentions are still strictly honourable,' he shrugged. 'Besides, I'm doing this for girls like you, too. It's one thing to have Romans occupy your territory, but it's something completely different when they start marrying into our people.'

'He'd have me marry a Roman.' Why she suddenly said it, she didn't half know. She was generally obedient to her father's wishes, always had been. But the Roman was old, he had the nose of a hawk. She did not mind them, she even respected them but to be one's wife? Oh, she wouldn't fight the decision. But she had felt uncomfortable.

Morcant gave a snort and, unseen to her (or so he figured, it was still dark), clenched his fists. 'Then you should be glad you're here with me now,' he said brusquely. Perhaps this chieftain was far more involved with the Romans than they had initially thought. Hm. 'Got any sisters your father already married off?'

'I...had a sister.' Essylt tugged at the hem of her tunic. 'But she died.'

'Sorry for your loss,' he said after a short silence and went on rather quickly: 'How long have the Romans been in your father's territory?'

'Oh, for two years and a bit, as I told you,' she said, glad to brush over the subject like this. 'What else do you want to know? How often I've seen a Roman officer in our house? What they've given my family? I've received jewelry and fabrics from then. They've always been very nice to me. Never rude. Never...inproper. And they've never taken me hostage me, I suppose.'

'I'm not going to give you jewellery and fabrics, either,' he retorted with a slight grin. 'Instead, I give you plain truths instead of varnished lies.'

She wasn't going to argue about Romans with him. Even if he gave her all of that, she would hardly be permitted to accept it from him. 'It's getting lighter. We probably can get going now. I'm very cold. Please, let's get up.'

This was going to be a problem, if she kept getting cold that easily. He had nothing on him to build a fire with - at least not the easy way. He preferred not to light beacons that might lead adversaries to his whereabouts, but if she fell ill or froze to death, it wouldn't do him much good either. 'All right,' he said, getting up and looking her over. She looked as though she was going to snap in half from shivering any moment now. 'You'll be able to warm up when we arrive. It won't take long,' he said.

She staggered up in his wake, glancing down to see that the patch of frost had disappeared. Why, then, did she feel as if her legs and arms were half-frozen? Was it perhaps the shock, or that she had eaten so little of her normal diet? Essylt rubbed her arms together, hugging herself as she walked down the hill. It had been sunny yesterday, she had gone out without her cloak. Only for a little while...But she felt silly for it now. 'I've been seeing lots of owls lately,' she said, to distract herself from her unease. 'Always a grey one. With black spots. I didn't know there were so many here, close to dawn.'

'Don't ask me, I don't pay attention to owls,' he said. 'Never seen one the likes of which you described, though.' Morcant pushed his way through the underbrush until they arrived at a slightly more well-trodden path. Well, path - it was more a gametrail than anything else.

'Right.' She slipped down the sloping hill to the winding trail and had to stick out her hands, regaining her balance on a tree. 'Can I ask you something?'

She turned her head sideways. He was looking straight ahead. 'Have you been spying on m long? Did you plan to take me, or was it just...when you found out...'

'Spur of the moment decision,' he explained, 'it's not my job to spy on women.' Morcant laughed shortly. Of course, he'd rather spy on women than on Romans, but she needn't know that.

'I see.' They reached the trail and her feet found steady ground once more. The path went left and right. Essylt thought she heard the sound of streaming water somewhere. 'So I've no one else to blame for this but me.' She smiled at that.

'Might not be as bad as you think, if you were about to be married off to a Roman.' At least she was starting to sound less scared. Morcant wasn't really a patient man, and it probably wouldn't have taken long for her to get on his nerves.
