Briallen felt like her heart leapt from her chest. ‘My lord!’ she said, ‘What…’ Tudwrig didn’t seem to hear her, maybe he was ignoring her. She jumped past Essylt, reaching for the ladder, but knew she was too slow. Morcant had already opened the gate to a crack, and her husband was not a big man; he slipped through to the other side. Surely he did not believe he could kill Rufus on his own? They had a plan! It was not this! No, she realized, and the shock made her halt in her tracks, feeling cold from head to toes, as if Essylt had put her spell of ice on her instead of on the Roman. No, Tudwrig would not change the plans, unless something was changing in him. ‘Gods, no!’ she cried. ‘Tudwrig!’ |

'Has my lord come out to play?' Rufus sneered. He might not be a very buff man himself, being of a more lithe build, but he was certainly stronger than this sorry excuse of a man. If he'd been in any position to really think the situation through, he might have come to the conclusion that he wasn't at his very best himself. The combined strain of knowing Rhywallon lurked around here somewhere in the woods, plus Essylt's half-succeeded attempt to kill him had left him a little shaken. But Rufus wasn't thinking; adrenalin had him in its grip and he was riding it for all he was worth. As far as he was concerned, this was the day it all ended. If need be, he'd tear them apart with his bare hands. Tudwrig shook his head with a jerky movement. 'I am deadly serious, my lord,' he said, stressing the deadly in that growl that normally sounded so dreadful to him, but was a welcome change from his normal demeanor now. He wanted to embrace the beast, and be fully cognizant when he tore the Roman to little strips. 'I suggest we settle this between the two of us. Winner takes all.' Lentulus looked taken aback for a moment, but then a wolfish grin spread across his features. 'If you so wish. How is my lord with his fists?' Not very good, Tudwrig had to admit. His claws, however - well. He breathed out, and saw the colour drain from the Roman's cheeks as the change overtook him. |

Essylt had no power to move or to speak when the thing that had been lord Tudwrig turned and reared his head. It was…a bear, or a wolf, or a dragon…It was impossible to say. Briallen was running, crying something and looking upset, scared. From her high point, she could see that Rufus was as shocked as she was. He’s a monster, she thought numbly. It’s only right that he’ll be killed by one. Right, maybe, but that didn’t explain anything. She’d seen what the Otherworld could bring. Ice in her hands, Udd Wyll, moving pictures in the water. But a man changing into a beast? What kind of trickery was that? ‘Let me go!’ Briallen shouted at the man-at-arms who had moved to barricade the gate after Morcant had opened it. He was deadly pale, but something in his stance told her that he would not open that door again even if she put a sword to his heart. ‘This is a direct order from your lady! It is your lord that is out there, do you understand? This was never supposed to happen – he has to – I need to go out there and bring him back!’ Before Rufus thrusts a blade between his ribs. ‘My lady, that is...that is the monster out there,’ the guard whispered. ‘You must wait until he turns back. Everyone knows what happened to his brides, he…’ ‘I am his bride. Me!’ Briallen posed herself directly in front of him, staring into his eyes. ‘The one who survived. The one who stayed after his terrible secret got out. The one who has fought for Caer March as hard as she’s fought for her husband’s sanity! Now let. me. through!' |

Morcant could not see what was happening to the chieftain, as the gate was now closed once more. He could hear, however: a howl that chilled the blood in his veins. It was a sound straight from the Otherworld. No earthly creature could make that kind of noise. He'd been nervous before, but never quite this frightened, and he was very glad that there was a sturdy gate between the monster and them. It was Lady Briallen's shouting that snapped him out of his superstitious reverie. She was demanding to be let through the gate to go to her husband, and while Morcant didn't doubt that she had survived him at his worst before, the guard was probably very right not to let her out. Without thinking about propriety - he was a simple man, after all -, he stepped forward and put a hand on her shoulder. 'Lady Briallen, the lord might not be a danger to you, but Lentulus certainly is. If he gets to you before your husband does -' he left it hanging. 'We can't risk your safety.' Besides, that thing outside sounded like it had claws and teeth and all sorts of unpleasant business. Morcant really didn't want to dwell on it. Marcus Lentulus, known colloquially as Rufus, Tribune of the People, appointed as highest authority in this godforsaken backwater by the Imperator, and de facto ruler of the underworld of Rome, had seen a lot in his thirty-seven years of life. Never before, though, had a man turned into a monster in front of his very eyes. Never before had he been as frightened as he was now. Part of him didn't wish to believe his eyes, but the rest could not ignore the terrifying truth. Rufus instinctively turned tail and ran for the woods. If he came up against that - that... whatever it was, he would not live to see the sun set. The truth was as simple as that. In the woods, however, he stood perhaps more of a chance. He'd been on wild boar hunts, and while this was nowhere near the same, it was the only thing he could think to do. |
