He peered over his shoulder to the wound. The alcohol had done it's job, that was for sure. 'I've had worse, you know. Comes with the job?' He gave her his crooked smile and the burned, scarred half of his face stretched. - 'Thanks. You can...If you were me, Braegne. What would you do?' |

'No doubt,' she said with half a smile and wrapped the strip of cloth around his arm after she'd finished cleaning it. It was a stressful sort of thing to do, because she quite clearly remembered the look he had on his face yesterday. 'I imagine the one you got is in a far worse state.' - 'I - I don't know. I think I'd run away, but I am not as brave as you are.' She attempted a smile. |

'He's in no state at all,' he agreed curtly before he pulled himself from her grasp - but gently. 'Now I'd better get dressed and get us that horse. We're wasting time.' - 'Who's to say I am brave or won't run?' she muttered, feeling as if her whole spirit was clad in a shroud of mist, like the mist that hung around the hills and the low waters. |

Gwenllian got up and washed her hands in the water. She closed her bags, setting them on the foot-end of the bed. 'I'll settle up with the innkeeper and pack our things, then' she said. - 'You said you'd think about it, I wouldn't even have done that. But then, perhaps it'd be different if it had been my husband.' Thankfully it wasn't. Terrible thing to contemplate, she thought. |

Rhywallon left the room. It was early still, but he knew his way around here by now. The farrier would sell good horses. Nothing pretty, but Rhywallon was not the sort of man that went for looks. That, he thought with a certain humor, would hardly be fair after all. - 'He is a nice man,' she tried, not even sure who she was trying to defend and why. 'Most of the time.' |

Settling up with the innkeeper proved a little difficult, because he insisted that he'd had to fodder two horses instead of one. It was only when Gwenllian suggested that they'd wait for Rhywallon's return to discuss the matter properly, that he seemed to change his mind and take her money without anymore arguing. It was actually quite satisfying, and she grinned a bit when she sat down to wait for Rhywallon. - 'I don't know him that well.' Braegne sat down again, ebcause she really had no clue what else could be done in the room. She didn't want to leave Briallen alone. |

He bound the new horse with the reigns outside, where he could keep an eye on it. She was alreasdy waiting for him. 'We're ready.' - 'No, me neither. But he seemed nice. Please, Braegne. I need some time alone.' |

'Good. You scare the innkeeper, you know,' she smiled and carried the saddlebags outside. - 'I'll be in the washing room or the kitchen if you need me,' Braegne said quietly. She gathered the stack of clothing in her arms and walked outside. |

He raised his eyebrows and walked after her. 'I scare a lot of people.' He took the saddle bags from her and heaved them on the horse, fastening the belts. 'They're superstitious. Believe my face is cursed. Or that I am one of the Good Folk.' He grinned, though quite mirthless. 'It has its benefits.' - She lay down; first on her back, then on her belly. Thinking was the hardest and easiest thing to do. Somehow she could not reach a decision; staying seemed folly. She was sure her father would not want his only daughter to marry a monster. Leaving was dangerous; not just because of the ending summer, but because Eiluned was right and the treaty would be useless. She did not wish harm to the Vale. Indeed, she did not wish harm to the chieftain of Caer March, but what was she supposed to do with a beast for a husband? It would mean she had to shoulder his duties for the Vale of the White Horse. It would be heavy...heavy indeed. And what about family? Would she even bed a man who could turn into a furred creature within a heartbeat? |

Gwenllian untied her horse and mounted. 'I should say,' she agreed. It didn't seem like a lot of fun - indeed, the scars looked quite painful - but there was no doubt it came in useful at times. She did wonder whether he still minded, or that he'd gotten used to it. 'Which way?' |

'South-West,' he said, mounting his horse and inspecting her with his look. 'I don't mean to bring you in a position of discomfort, but does that skirt help you at all?' |

'Not noticably,' she said as she tried to pull the fabric in an as comfortable a position as possible. In the past few weeks she had noticed that it was a bother travelling quickly like this, but she'd seen no real solution apart from wearing men's clothes, and that would've attracted attention she didn't really want. |

He said nothing to this. They rode on in silence. He was beginning to discover that Gwenllian was a tough sort of girl, but she seemed uneasy with silences. Perhaps in due time, she'd learn. |

The rest of the day was passed with prowling around and sniffing the things she had dropped on the floor. He licked the moist off the stone tiles and lay down with his head between his arms. His head felt like someone had taken a hammer and given his skull a good beating. As a result, the room was all wobbly. During the long hours, he'd gotten used from the sounds outside and a few hours before sundown he fell in a restless sleep. It was probably around suppertime that he woke up with a splitting headache and only a fragmentary memory of the day. He had dreamed of Briallen..? Tudwrig groaned and passed a hand over his face. With a start he got up; there was no fur, nor sharp claws. Just when the realization came, his headache nearly knocked him to the ground again. |

It must be nearly time for supper. Briallen washed her face, cleaning it from the trails that the tears had left. She brushed her hair, leaving it unbraided, falling over her back. It was time to give Eiluned an answer, but there was still so much chaos inside of her. She wanted to give this household two weeks; somehow she felt like she owed it to the woman with the grey her and the lined face. She might owe it to the man she had wed, even though he had hardly touched her yet. Did she owe it to The Vale of the White Horse? 'Compose yourself,' she told herself sternly. Briallen left the room, down the hall. |

For a few agonizing moments, he thought that he was going to lose it again. Tudwrig didn't want to and grabbed his head in an attempt to clear it. He came to his feet with difficulty and made for the open window, where he inhaled the fresh air. It helped enough for him to get a tight reign on his selfcontrol. He needed to go down to supper, to apologize to Briallen that he couldn't ride with her today. Without bothering to comb his hair or change his clothes - he felt he shouldn't waste a moment -, he stepped into the hallway and made for the dining room. |

She had only barelysit down when she saw Eiluned. The woman looked almost sick with worry, but fought a battle to keep her face in check. 'Eiluned?' Briallen swallowed. Edited by Marieke, 24 Jan 2010, 17:11.

She turned around and made a bow. 'Yes?' Eiluned had been dreading Briallen's answer for the entire day, making it nearly impossible for her to do her tasks as she should. |

Tudwrig walked to the two women and made a bow with difficulty. Both of them looked shocked to see him. He hadn't been in his room for that long, had he? Eiluned quietly stepped away, answering to his unspoken question. He looked at Briallen. 'I - I apologize I couldn't take you out riding today,' he said quietly. |

She stared up at him. Words got stuck in her throat anyway, and she wasn't sure what she needed to tell him. Should she get up, help him sit down? He looked aweful. More than that; he looked like a broken image of a mirror. |

'I would tell you we'll go tomorrow, but I don't know if I'll be feeling better.' He probably sounded as unhappy as he felt, he thought as he sat down. The memory of the dream he'd had about Briallen when he was somewhere inbetween beast and man was terrifying. He clearly remembered an urge to hurt her, and he couldn't look at her without feeling guilty. |

She was upset, he could feel it radiating from her. Tudwrig sighed and looked at the food on the table. He wasn't hungry at all. 'I hope your day was a good one,' he said, simply to have something to say. |

He could only look at her in horror. 'I thought it was a dream...' He buried his head in his hands and groaned. It was like a nightmare, this whole situation. Of course he couldn't have hoped to keep it secret forever, but there might have come a time when he could break it to her gently. Not like this, for sure. |

'I am sorry,' he managed eventually. 'It was never - I can't help it. That's not me, Briallen.' Tudwrig felt the need to stress that fact. 'It's something that takes over my body, my mind and I - I've hardly any control over it.' |
