'I've used those words, yes. I assume he is dead - it's nothing of importance, anyway.'

It would really be too ill-mannered to inquire further than this. Essylt nodded only, moistening her lips. It could still mean that he was a bastard son. It could also mean he’d been orphaned at an early age. He was right: it was of no importance to her.

'Why, are you curious to know how a man like me got into politics?' he asked.

‘But I don’t know what kind of man you are, nor if it matters within Roman affairs of state,’ Essylt said softly. ‘All I know of you is what you’ve chosen to show me.’

Rufus smiled. 'You're right there, Essylt. Now, I would tell you more, but that'd be a bit unwise in our current position,' he added softly.

‘What position?’ she asked, keeping her voice sweet-tempered. ‘You mean where you tell me what to do, or where I’m friends with Morcant?’

'The latter,' he said and stretched his legs out in front of him. 'It'd would greatly inconvenience me if he should get to know some things about my person. But I'm guessing you had that figured out too, hadn't you?'

Yes, she had. She brushed her hair back. ‘Have you guaranteed lord Tudwrig your good behavior as well?’ she inquired.

'Of course. I would not dream of putting a single foot out of line here.' A toe usually sufficed.

‘Wouldn’t you?’ she asked softly. ‘Not even dream?’ Because what she had gathered from Gwyddien, the man was a schemer. A brilliant politician whose shadow could loom over people as the shadow of a mountain drapes over the valley.

'If I have to dream about it, it'd mean it's not achievable. And I really don't like to waste my time on unachievable things, you see.'

‘…What does that mean?’ she asked, frowning. If he did not have to dream about defying Tudwrig, was it achievable for him? Had he already done so? Gods, that was exactly why the brotherhood had felt so unsettled at her mentioning his name. She straightened her back. Prodding around his aspirations was perhaps not something she should do.

'A lot,' he answered and smiled at her, wondering if she was starting to get nervous. 'Nothing you should worry about, though. I have every intention to be on my best behavior here.'

She tried to keep her face very still, betraying neither nerves nor curiosity. ‘Then what is your worst like?’

No. She probably didn’t. Her gaze faltered, falling back to the fireplace. If she told him no, he might talk about other things; things she didn’t want to hear because it wouldn’t serve Morcant in any way. But if she’d say she did, what abyss would open beneath her? Unless he’d still refuse – why would he spill his secrets to her, after all? Essylt bit softly on her lips. ‘I don’t know.’

Rufus shifted on the bench so that he could get a better look on Essylt. Everything he'd say to her would most likely find its way to Morcant's ears as well. In this case, it was in his advantage that the man'd know he was not to be messed with. He scratched his chin. 'Let's just say that you haven't seen me at my worst, and you probably will not either.'

‘I see.’ What else was there to say? Perhaps he had murdered, ravaged, schemed with the worst consequences imaginable. He had certainly frightened her with his interrogation and had no trouble believing that he could be far crueler. Essylt shifted back just a bit.

'Professional deformation, you see.' The smile was back. 'But enough of me. Have you decided whether or not you'll take my offer of sending some men to your father's chieftaincy?'

‘You give me very little time to think about this, and it’s difficult,’ she muttered, swallowing.

Rufus gave a shrug. 'Most people have even less time to make a decision like this, you know,' he said and leaned towards her. She certainly looked nervous, he thought. 'But if I'm honest, I don't really see the difficulty in this decision. Your father's caer is probably in danger, and I'm offering to send men to prevent any harm coming onto those who live their.'

‘The thing is…It’s so hard to make sense of these things. I told you this, didn’t I?’ She looked directly into his face. ‘All it really showed me was my brother. Alone. He…it’s possibly not some physical danger. I don’t know.’ She shook her head. ‘Anyway, I am thinking of going myself.’

'I am going to take Morcant with me,' she said. Would he honestly send his men to protect the both of them? Would Morcant accept that?

'If you think one man is enough to make the journey, I won't press my men upon you.' It was a bit of a pity, though. If he could somehow send men with the two of them, who knows how much he might find out...

‘I don’t know,’ she said again, more impatiently this time. ‘He helped me through that road before. But I appreciate your efforts,’ she added milder, smiling. ‘I don’t think you do it out of selfless reasons, but I’ll look over that for now.’

'Oh, but it's not completely selfish, either,' he assured her. His smile widened and he leaned back, his hands resting on the edge of the seat. One of them was so close he only had to move a finger to touch Essylt.

‘No? Then what is there that will not help you in some way?’ she asked lightly. ‘You say I don’t want to know your worst side; perhaps it couldn’t hurt if you tell me about your best.’

'Heh. At my best, I do everything within my power for the people - no matter whether they are citizens of Rome of of your people. I know it may be hard to believe, with all the chieftains and consuls and tribunes who only pretend to be interested in the life of the plebeians.' Rufus ran a hand through his hair. 'You asked what will not help me in some way? The fact that I'll be a couple of men short. But it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. I'd never forgive myself if you got waylaid on your way back home.'

‘My father is one chieftain who cared for his people,’ she said quietly. ‘Genuinely. Why do you think he consorted with your people when they came? But thank you.’ The corners of her mouth softened. ‘That’s nice of you.’
