'That's good to hear. I'm sure it keeps him out of mischief.' Though he wasn't sure whether that was a good or a bad thing. Rufus scratched his cheek. 'So will you allow me to bring you to Eiluned, or do you want to take care of it yourself?'

She sighed. ‘If it pleases you to escort me, I have no real objections.’ And if she had, what would it matter to him? Perhaps he’d stalk off and bother Morcant, framing him with uncomfortable questions instead.

'This way. Last I saw her, she was in the kitchens.' Rufus walked Essylt towards the kitchens. She wasn't saying much of anything. Not that he could blame her for it, but it was bothering him that she still hadn't told him anything that could be of any use.

She glanced around. There were many women in the kitchen, about five of them. All of them seemed busy. One was an elderly woman, her hair braided high on her head and wearing a plain, grey gown. ‘Is that her?’

He gave a short nod and stepped towards Eiluned before Essylt could've done so. 'My lady,' he said tersely, 'there's someone who would like to speak to you.'
The woman raised her eyebrows in a politely questioning way. 'I'm a little busy, my lord,' she answered.
'I've been told it's important.' Rufus drew up a smile, though he knew that Eiluned wasn't really susceptible to that sort of thing.

She felt her face flush mildly, but raised up her chin. ‘I won’t take much of your time. I just have a question.’ She looked at the woman’s face. She did seem kind, in a strict sort of way. ‘Actually, I wanted to ask the lord of this house, but I am told he is indisposed.’
‘He is,’ Eiluned agreed. ‘What question is this, child?’
Child? Essylt cleared her throat. Nobody except her parents had called her that; but then, Eiluned had no idea who she was. ‘I was hoping…well, wondering if Caer March had received any news from Two Lakes recently.’
There was a little silence, in which she felt Eiluned’s gaze travel up and down her person. It made her uncomfortable. ‘I do not believe we have. Why would you ask this?’
‘My family lives there,’ she replied quickly. ‘Is it really not possible for me to speak to lord Tudwrig?’
‘No,’ the woman said, her voice much sharper now. ‘Is there something we should know that is the cause for your worry?’
Essylt opened her mouth, then closed it again, shaking her head. ‘Just this feeling. I am sorry for bothering you.’

Rufus was perhaps a little disappointed that Essylt only really wanted to know if there had been any news from Two Lakes. 'We won't keep you from your work any longer,' he interposed smoothly, and put his hand on Essylt's shoulder again.

Essylt saw Eiluned’s face fall into a frown as soon as he touched her shoulder. ‘Thank you, my lord. The two of you are closely acquainted, then?’

'We go a while back,' was all Rufus said, his face carefully kept into his politician-expression.

‘I see. I regret that I had to disappoint you then.’ Eiluned gave a nod.
‘That’s…that’s alright,’ Essylt said. Perhaps this was even good news, cause for hope. If some terrible thing had happened to the chieftain of Two Lakes, others would hear about that. Father was most likely doing fine. She swallowed, turning around to leave the kitchen, though his hand was still feeling heavy on her shoulder, so close to her neck.

When they were out of earshot, Rufus bent over to speak in Essylt's ear: 'Any particular reason you're so anxious for news?'

Her muscles tightened a moment. His breath made the tiny hairs in her neck stand up. ‘There is.’ She didn’t look at him, but there was no reason to lie about this. He would not believe a negative reply and perhaps he could even help her out. Nothing came around that he did not know of, wasn’t that what he had said? ‘I’m afraid something might have happened.’

He wondered if it had something to do with the last images that had shown up in the water, the ones that had made her seem so distraught. 'Oh?' he inquired. 'Do tell.'

Essylt watched the corridor from the corner of her eye. It was deserted. ‘I believe it will be something with fire,’ she said with difficulty. ‘I have no idea how to interpret it. But it’s my brother I’m worrying about…He’s only an infant!’

Fire? Rufus rubbed his cheek thoughtfully. 'You've seen this in the water?' he asked after a glance over his shoulder to make sure they were alone.

If he could find a way to make her use that ability to his advantage, Rufus thought, a lot of his problems would be gone. Unfortunately, he didn't think she would without a little pressure. 'I see. I'm afraid there's not much you could do,' he started, 'but if you're really worried then perhaps there is something we can arrange.'

‘I already have.’ She looked up at him. 'But tell me what you have to offer, if that's what you were going to say.'

'I can spare men to dispatch to Two Lakes and stop this dreadful event from happening to the best of their abilities. There's enough water in your father's chieftaincy to put out the fire of ten burning caers.'

She thought about it, saying nothing. If it had not already happened, then maybe it could save lives. ‘And in return, you’d ask me…what?’

'Oh, there's nothing I can think of right off-hand. Let's just say a future favour,' Rufus said with a completely straight face. He had no illusions that she'd be so naieve to accept straightaway, but if she was really desperate then perhaps she would.

‘I don’t – well, I’ll consider it.’ She tried to smile; it was a bit watery and quickly slid off her face again.

'Don't take too long. The offer expires when the sun sets.' That was about how long he thought it would take him to find out enough of what was going on in the forest to decide how many men he needed here. And besides, making ultimatums had always served him well in the past.

She considered him. He looked a little like the time she had met him for the fist time, dressed in dark clothes. ‘Why?’

'Because I'm starting to loose sight on why I should keep extending a helping hand to you,' he said pleasantly. 'I'm not a heartless man, you know, but I'm a little hurt that you keep acting so cool and distant when I've tried to earn your friendship.'

And I thought I tried to explain to you that I did not desire your help! Essylt stared at him, not sure what to say that wouldn’t be an insult. Friendship – why would he need it when he had power over her? ‘I do consider the wellbeing of my friends important,’ she uttered after a while, curbing her voice so that it sounded quite calm. ‘I mean, you – do not seem to get on particularly well with them.’

'And I've promised you I'd leave them alone, didn't I?' Rufus shrugged. 'But I understand that you wouldn't like to be inbetween fires. No one does.' He spread his hands. 'Enough of that, though. I've been meaning to ask you how things were with our little mutual problem, and the solution thereof.'

‘Ah.’ She wrapped her arms around her own waist. ‘There’s nothing else I can tell you...’ She looked over at his face and felt a pang of genuine regret. Nobody liked to die. ‘Um. I’m sorry. It’s probably not what you wanted to hear. But if I can help it, I will.’

'That's good to hear,' he said perfunctorily, though he didn't like the sound of ifs and buts. Rufus looked over his shoulder again. Stick around here and try and wheedle some information out of her, or go back to sneaking around the caer? Usually he had a rather solidly outlined plan, but right now he didn't know what to do. It was a rather unsettling sort of experience. 'I assume you have more things to do than to stay here and talk with me,' he said then, deciding that he would let her make the choice - even though she wouldn't know.

‘No, not this time,’ she answered, feeling some self-mockery. She made a quiet little snort. Of course, if she said yes and went back home he might not pose any more uncomfortable questions on her. Morcant would prefer she would. But she’d gone up to the caer because she’d felt a little lonely. Any company would distract her.
