If she wanted to go back to Two Lakes, he wouldn't let her go by herself. Maybe he'd have lost his work when they'd return here, but he didn't like working by Rufus' grace anyway. 'All right, so we're going back to Two Lakes to fetch your brother,' he said, more to himself.

His words suddenly made it more real. ‘It doesn’t mean we have to go now,’ she said weakly. Maybe the images said something about the future. Perhaps they were not real at all. ‘I’m sorry for waking you. Go to sleep, Morcant. You need to rise early.’

'Not before you've calmed down a bit,' he said quietly and touched a hand to her cheek.

She took some time to swallow. ‘I –’ well, she was not calm, that’d be a lie. ‘I know I can’t do much right now. We’re too far.’ She was silent again, then moved his hand to her waist. ‘Here. Just hold me, alright? Till I sleep.’

'Of course,' he said and shifted a little. If his body started to give him a bother again, at least she wouldn't notice in this position. But perhaps his mind was too preoccupied with trying to figure out why Rhywallon had figured so prominently in Essylt's dream... Well, he could hope for it, at least.

Fear often kept people from sleep. Essylt didn’t understand how she had managed to sleep again so quickly, but the scent of woodland and fire had enveloped her like a shield and it had made her dream without uncanny images. It was morning when she woke, and Morcant had already slipped from her side and left for the caer. Essylt tried to keep herself busy. She worked through her morning chores, tried to weave but found that it was too quiet; it couldn’t keep her minds off Carwyn. Then now was a good time to walk up to the caer. She had promised Morcant she’d do it and the walk would keep her distracted. She took a two loafs the flat breads, some cheese and some of the few dried fruits, wrapping them in a cloth.
It wasn’t raining today, but the sky was grey, like a thick carpet had been laid over it. She kept on walking steadily, finally reaching the courtyard. People were walking around, the workshops were occupied. Where would he be?

Morcant put the chisel down and took up two parts of what was going to become a small cabinet. It was looking better than his piss-poor attempt at an owl, that much was for sure. He started assembling the piece. When he was done, he wiped the sweat off his face with his forearm and dusted his hands off. His stomach was grumbling, and he wanted a bite to eat. Would Essylt come today? She was probably a little too preoccupied to come, he imagined. Well, no matter. The food they provided him with was good enough. Morcant stepped out of the workshop and looked at the sky. It looked as dreary as it had this morning.

Oh, there he was. Essylt smiled; he looked weary. ‘You,’ she said, hurrying to him. ‘I was looking for you. I brought you this.’ She held out the package.

'Oh!' Morcant said, a little taken aback by her sudden appearance. Then he smiled, taking the package from her hands. 'Thank you.' He could smell the scent of bread before he'd pulled the cloth away. His stomach grumbled suddenly. 'Let's go sit somewhere,' he suggested.

‘I wanted to get out of the house,’ she admitted. ‘But I did all my chores, so I can stay as long as you like.’ Actually, there was something she wanted to find out here. ‘But I don’t think your break will be that long.’

'Long enough to enjoy your food,' he answered with a grin and sat down on a bench in front of the workshop. It was similar to the one outside their house, but a little smaller. He put the package of food on his knees and opened it. The food disappeared rapidly.

She watched him eat. He was working so hard, she thought. Just to support her. He could be with the brotherhood – he didn’t need job at all. Wouldn’t it be better if she told him to go back to his friends, his brothers? And maybe she could live with them for a while. Would Gwyddien mind? She’d be safe, probably. Unless Rufus found out where they were, but without her input it might be hard to track them down. Essylt reached out a hand and ran her fingers briefly over his upper arm. ‘I’m going to have a look around while you get back to work.’

'Go ahead.' Morcant wiped his mouth and fingers with the cloth. 'If you stick around long enough, I might be able to walk home with you.'

‘Yes, maybe.’ She got up and walked around the courtyard to the entrance of the caer. There was a broad corridor here. Right led to the great hall. She looked about until she saw someone. ‘Is the chieftain around perhaps?’
‘Ah,’ the girl said. ‘Haven’t seen him today. You might need to ask Eiluned.’
‘Who’s that?’
‘She runs the household in stead of lady Briallen. She’s somewhere around. Excuse me.’
‘Thank you.’ Essylt stepped aside and the girl hurried past her with a basket full of breads in her arms. How would she even know what this Eiluned looked like? She left the hall and moved up a story. Most part of the caer would be open space, just like Two Lakes. She didn’t want to venture into the family quarters, that would be uncalled for. But she really did need to see the chieftain.

Rufus moved quietly through the caer. He wasn't in the mood for swaggering - and besides, the information he was looking for this time didn't involve stalking around as if the caer belonged to him. Though it wouldn't be very long before this place was, in fact, his. He was anxious to get more information on this mysterious group that Morcant and Cuhelyn seemed to belong to, but as of yet he was unlucky. It was really frustrating.

She had no idea where Eiluned was. The stillroom, someone told her, but when she came there, nobody was there. Well, perhaps the woman was really engaged in something important. Essylt understood enough of a large household to know what crises could arise. She satisfied herself in looking around. It was a small place, by and large. Not so grand as Two Lakes. It reminded her of a fortification. She moved up a story. Most rooms seemed fairly empty. Odd. Well, the chieftain might not have a large family. She reached a door with a heavy bar. Then this couldn’t be the private family quarters of the caer. Who would bar such a door?

He'd half decided to knock on Tudwrig's door until the man opened up on him, but when he rounded a corner he saw that he apparently wasn't the only one who had ideas. What was Essylt doing here? And why was there a large cross beam in front of the chieftain's door? Rufus licked his lips and walked up to the girl, quietly moving through the hall. 'Sneaking around, are we?'

She nearly jumped. That man – the last she desired to see now. Sneaking, indeed. She lowered her hand, which had shot up to her mouth in fright. ‘I’m not. Of course not. I just wanted to see the chieftain.’

'Well, he's indisposed. Something particular you wanted to ask of him?' Rufus cocked his head. She looked a little distraught, he thought.

‘Yes,’ she said prickly. How did he know so well? ‘But they told me I could ask this Eiluned. Only I can’t find her. Apparently this isn’t the right place to look for her, so I’ll just go downstairs again.’

Essylt looked at him warily for some moments. What was he doing here – did he need to speak to the chieftain himself? Why was the man always indisposed? Surely, hus wife saw him from time to time so why couldn’t they? ‘I suppose I could do that,’ she then said. ‘I only wanted to know whether he had received any message from Two Lakes lately.’

'She is very busy, with the lady Briallen's absence,' Rufus started, 'but if you really want to see her I might be able to arrange something.' And of course, he'd stick around to hear exactly what was so important. He smiled at her.

She was quiet for a moment, wondering why his smile was annoying her so much. She wasn’t a simple townswoman, was she? ‘Is it really necessary that you mediate between and this household so much?’ She pulled her shoulders back. ‘I understand how it keeps them busy, I’m from a chieftain’s caer myself, after all.’

Rufus put his fists on his hips and cocked his head, wondering what happened to her desire to be inconspicuous and invisible. 'I am sorry for trying to be kind,' he started with a half-bow. 'By all means, arrange things by yourself then.'

‘I…Didn’t mean to say you were unkind,’ Essylt muttered. She looked around. That heavy beam on the door caught her eye again. It gave her an uneasy lurch in her belly. Why would a door be so heavily bolted from the outside? As if it was meant to keep whatever was inside from getting away…No, that couldn’t be. Nobody held prisoners close to the private chambers of the family.

'Of course you didn't.' He followed her gaze to the closed door. Ever since the cross beam had been added to the already heavy bolt that kept the door closed, he'd been wondering. He had other things on his mind now, though. Rufus looked back at Essylt, smile still on his face. Then he put a hand on her shoulder to steer her away from the room. 'So how are your friends doing, hm?'

This again? She would still not betray them, even if she did know what was going on inside the brotherhood. Essylt lowered her gaze. ‘I think you’ll find that Morcant is working very hard on the job you’ve provided for him,’ she said softly.
