As an answer, he pulled the cord from underneath his tunic and showed it to her. 'Of course. Why?' |

He untied the knot in his neck and pressed it into her hands. 'What are you going to do? If I can ask,' he added. |

She picked up the string of braid that she had just finished when he’d come home. It was made from the spun wool, undyed as it was, but she had plaited it in a complicated pattern. It was how her mother had shown her sometime, telling her that tightening the knots would tighten the simple spell of protection. She had believed it some form of hearth magic, effective perhaps as plain charms or against the lesser intentions of the Good Folk. Now she wondered if her mother knew about Udd Wyll in some way. Had his blood run through her side of the family or her father’s? She’d never asked. The brittle oak leaf clung on bravely. She smiled at it. Within this braid she had woven a thread of the forget-me-not blue tunic, a supple straw from the roof of their dwelling and a lock of her own hair. Now she attached it to the leather throng, crouching behind where he was sitting. ‘I hope it will keep you safe forever.’ Gently, she brushed his hair to one side, tying the ropes together for him. |

Morcant looked down at the plait, not really knowing what to say to this. It felt warm against his skin, and he thought he could recognize Essylt's scent lingering around it. 'That's... Thank you,' he said. Her fingers in his neck tickled; a very nice sort of feeling. |

‘You told me you’d go through fire for me,’ she went on, her hands still resting somewhere between his neck and shoulders. ‘If there’s anything I can do to protect you against Marcus Lentulus, I will do that. Safe or dangerous. He’s preying on you, Morcant. On you and the brotherhood.’ |

He half-turned on his chair. 'On the brotherhood? He isn't even supposed to know of our existence,' he said with a frown. |

‘I don’t think he knows that there’s a brotherhood,’ she said softly. ‘But he’s seen Cuhelyn. Apparently there’s been reported sights of men roaming about the forest, just on the border.Don’t forget he must have heard part of your conversation before I could get him away from the house. He can put two and two together.’ |

'Hm. So he can.' Morcant bit on the inside of his cheek. That damned bastard son of a whore was casting his shadow over everything they did. He sighed and shook his head, putting one hand over Essylt's. 'I'll mind my steps,' he promised her. |

‘I hope you will.’ It had been occupying her all day, making her feel cold to the skin although the fire was blazing. ‘If he does something to you, I…’ |

She hoped he was right. Rufus was a clever man. Cruel too, she thought. The way he had interrogated her still made her feel weak. Had it been just a trick to get her talking, or had it been genuine? That hand beneath her dress on her calf, the way he had cupped her breasts while so casually talking… ‘You know he sees me as an opening to you.’ |

'Which is exactly why you should stay as far away from him as possible,' he said. His thumbs carressed the back of her hand. 'You look preoccupied. You shouldn't worry about me, Essylt. I'll manage, honest.' |

She nodded, smiling at his face. ‘Right then. Carry that charm. I am counting on some Fair Folk power to enhance it.’ |

'Wild horses couldn't pull it off me,' he said solemnly, then smiled back at Essylt. He wrapped his arms around her, carefully so. 'Thank you,' Morcant repeated, since he didn't know how else to put what he wanted to say. |

Her eyes fluttered, fluttered again. She could feel the lashes brush against her skin. Without kissing her, she felt submerged by the tide; it was dark like water from the beneath the surface, and quiet. Her body touched his and suddenly she was very aware of how much she wanted to feel him against her. ‘You…there’s no need to thank me.’ She withdrew, slightly trembling. With one hand, she touched his face. I will protect you even if it means that I have to sleep with Rufus, she thought. |

'But there is,' he said, wanting to finish that sentence until her hand on his cheek distracted him. Her fingers were soft against his skin, and he wanted to put his over hers and keeping them there. But she'd pulled away, even if it was only a little, and she trembled. 'I - think the stew might be ready,' he said. |

'Of course. It's getting cold.' She moved away from him, but found it was with some trouble. As she had been whole all day, she was not very hungry. She ate her own portion without much interest. Instead, her eyes just kept creeping to him. Why? Had this sudden concen suddenly ignited what had been gradually growing all along? |

His stew had disappeared within a matter of minutes, and the cut of fresh bread followed soon after. It wasn't very noticable when he sat, but his body had once again made it very clear what being close to Essylt, even for only such a short period of time, did to him. It was easier to ignore it now, though. He was grateful for it. 'I'll have a day off the day after tomorrow,' he said. |

'Once, from a distance. The man looked every bit as ill as he was made out to be.' Morcant scraped the last bits of juice from his bowl with a piece of bread. 'I heard he keeps to his rooms most of the time.' |

‘I see. And Marcus Lentulus controls him, doesn’t he?’ At least, that’s what she had understood from hi words. And if it was no real control yet, it would be soon. Scheming and plotting, he’d told her. And she believed him. |

Morcant stacked the two bowls, putting their spoons in the top one. 'I'd like that. You would, too. Getting out of the house, I mean.' If nothing else, he hated the Roman for making it nearly impossible for Essylt to go out. But he figured that in the caer, he at least wouldn't make any overt moves. |

They spent some time in silence. She hung up a framework on the poles of the roundhouse and made a brief start with the weaving of a new cloth, using the yarn she had spun. Sometimes she thought he was looking at her, but perhaps she was just imagining things. He was tired, of course. |

He looked at her fingers working with the yarn sometimes. Not too often, since he didn't know whether or not she'd be annoyed at it. The gods knew it irked him when people looked on his fingers. But they were delicate, hers, and they worked quickly and flawlessly. Finally, he couldn't bear faking non-interest in her work. 'What are you going to make?' he asked, pulling his chair closer to her. |

'No, we can't,' he agreed. 'But making all of it yourself would take a while, I imagine.' He didn't really know; couldn't remember how his mother had done it. 'We could spare a little of our money to buy some?' It'd give them a reason to go out on his day off, for one thing. |

‘We can do both?’ she asked and smiled. ‘I like the work. And if we buy clothes, this can be an extra blanket, or a cloak.’ She looked at the pale wool. ‘At home, I would use dyes, of course. I think I was fairly good at weaving and embroidering. I could make shapes and figures. Tell a story from the old days.’ |
