'You don't want to be the cause of so many deaths, yet I don't see you actively searching for a solution to it either.' He cocked his head at her, eyebrows raised questioningly. 'Or are you, and are you just not telling me because you want me to think that I'll die, in hopes that I might run back home, hm?' |

‘It would be better if you went away,’ she said uneasily. He was getting uncomfortable close to the truth. ‘But I have more than one thing on my mind; you have given me very little reason to focus on coming to your aid.’ It didn’t sound as cold as she would have liked, but perhaps that was for the better. Despite not desiring death, he was still the same man as three days ago. |

'Ah. You disappoint me, Essylt,' he said coolly. 'Not enough reason, you say, yet up until three days ago I have offered to do everything within my power to make your life more bearable, since I know what it is like to be seperated from house and hearth - what it is like to be lonely. And that hasn't changed, either. It would be easy for me to tell the chieftain any number of things that would make him evict you and Morcant from this settlement. Yet I haven't, and you want to know why? Because I have taken a liking to you. I am aware that my behavior last time has given you cause for distrust, but where I kept every promise I made to you, you have done nothing to meet my one request to be honest with me. So tell me once more that I have given you no reason to come to my aid, please.' |

That was more like the harsher side she'd come to know so suddenly. Essylt had to wait a moment. ‘I have tried to be truthful,’ she whispered then. ‘This is what you got. I’m sorry.’ She stared from his face into the fire and back, clearing her throat. ‘I’ll try to think of a way for you then. But if you don’t want to leave this place, you’re making it hard for me. Unless I leave. Is that what you’re requesting?’ |

'No, I am only saying that I can't believe the only way around this is for either of us to leave. Perhaps if there is a way to stop your friends from swarming down the hill it won't happen, to name something I can think of,' he said dryly. |

‘Oh.’ She poked the fire again, making sparks reach for the air hole in the roof. ‘You think I’m affiliated to that whole group of warriors we saw? I haven’t seen them before.’ Well except for Elgued. |

'You might not be, but Morcant most certainly is. And since you are living with him in the same house, I daresay you're as good as affiliated with them.' Rufus crossed his arms. 'I'm not saying this is the way, merely suggesting that we look a little further than just you and me.' |

‘Maybe you’re right,’ she made herself say, though she was doubting it. If it were so easy, he should have no concerns about her safety; she’d just tell Morcant and Morcant would keep the brotherhood well away. ‘Udd Wyll told me that vision was not about what was going on. It was mostly about what sort of decision I was making. So I don’t even know if there is a way I can stop those things. Believe me,’ she added, ‘it hurts so much that I can barely breathe when I think about it too much.’ |

Because she wasn't a murderer. Rufus nodded, knowing that she was telling him the truth. 'And your Udd Wyll hasn't even given you a clue about this decision you have to make. That's slightly harsh, don't you agree? For a man - creature who tells you he loves you...' He spread his hands suggestively. |

'Tricks, stories and riddles to play with human lives? And yet you trust them more than you trust me.' Rufus got up, a haughty expression on his face. 'At least I was being clear in what I wanted. What next, will they give you a treasure map to find a lock of hair from a nymph you need to avert these course of events?' |

This was getting better by the second. Really, it was. '...Oh, he doesn't even know that many men might perish? So much for their goodness and fairness,' Rufus scorned. This was starting to irk him to such a degree that he would really like to have a word with this Udd Wyll, or any member of their meddling race. |

She shook her head. Her hand nearly pinched itself on the needle in her lap. ‘You don’t know what you’re speaking of. What happens there might have nothing to do with them; they do not share our world entirely, I thought you knew this.’ |

'I do know,' he answered shortly, grabbing her shoulders a little more forcefully than he normally would have done. 'If they don't share all of our world, nothing gives them the right to meddle in our lives. Nothing, Essylt. Flaunting their uncanny powers and claiming they are so much better than us doesn't mean they can press trials upon us at a whim. I am responsible for this Vale, because that infirmed weakling of a chieftain can't do it himself, and I will not have anything that disturbs the peace here.' |

They’re not claiming –. She wanted to say it, but couldn’t. Essylt had no idea what to think of this; it might be just that he was fearing for his own life, not thinking about the wellbeing of the settlement at all. ‘I am part of them too,’ she finally managed, quietly. ‘Maybe that’s due to their meddling according to you.’ |

'But no one else in this Vale is,' he snarled, letting go of her and taking a step back. He breathed deeply. It was a long time since he had lost his control like this. Many years, in fact. 'I'm sorry,' he said perfunctorily. 'I mean it, though. I will not stand for this. You best find a way to change these events, or I will be very put out.' Not to mention dead. |

‘Alright.’ She got up in a quick motion, dropping the needlework on the floor. Her cloak was by the door, hanging down from a spike that had already been there when she and Morcant had occupied the roundhouse. She whirled it on, stringing the cords tightly. |

It was still raining outside; he heard the drops dashing against the outer walls. Rufus let go of Essylt's shoulder after a look on the way her jaw was set. If she wanted to play it that way... 'Fine. I'm coming with you.' He too took his cloak. |

Essylt gave no reply. With the hood pulled deep over her eyes, she ventured outside. The cloth shielded her face against the lashing rain for a bit, but it a wrong notion to think that it would protect her all the way. She made for the end of the settlement with brisks steps, knowing that the Roman would have no problem keeping up with her anyway. The hill was a forlorn creature where wind crashed about freely. The slope was dripping, little streams of water and mud running down past her legs with speedy course. She had to halt by the Blowing Stone, leaning one hand against the surface, to catch her breath. |

Rufus looked around, half expecting and half hoping to see that strange moonlight creature called Udd Wyll. There was only rain as far as he could see, though. The wind sometimes blew through the holes of the stone, causing an eerie sort of music. There wasn't a single dry thread left on his body by now and it wasn't doing much good for his mood, either. |

When her breathing had quieted to a steadier pace, she straightened up, raising her eyes to the cloud-hung sky. The hood fell back, delivering her to the mercy of rain and wind but she didn’t move. The owl would know she was here, calling him to her. It only took a few heartbeats for him to dive from the sky as if he had been there all along. Maybe he had been hiding in the forest. His wings were dribbling drops on her face before she held up her arm. He only perched briefly. ‘Go,’ she said. ‘Find him.’ She was not such a fool to think that the Fair Folk could be summoned like servants. They were too free, entirely their own mind and plans. If he did not want her this time, the hill would simply remain unlit by moonlight. It was probably going to be a wait. Essylt stood straight and still. |

Just great. If that Udd Wyll showed up, Rufus had a few choice things to say to him. As it was, however, he probably would not show up - or only when they'd been standing in the rain for hours. He pressed his lips together and straightened his back. |

Good. He was perhaps a manipulative Roman politician who managed the world to his liking through his tongue, at least he did not complain like a small child. She waited long, listening to the rush of the water that fell from the sky. It was more bearable when she observed how it soaked her, when she let it wash over her, without counting the beads falling on her face. She must look like a plant on the hill, all dripping and swaying in the wind. Finally, something stirred in the sky. It was as though clouds thinned; a shimmer of silver fell down, very pale. Essylt looked at it with her lips parted, breathing what she did not dare to say aloud: ‘Please come.’ |

It was beyond him how the moon could shine in the middle of the day, but he had seen so many strange things since his arrival here that he didn't waste time at being surprised. Instead, he aimed his gaze at the patch of faint silvery, light. |

And then, at last, like a breath he moved forward. Essylt caught her own in her chest, swallowing. Perhaps it was because the clouds darkened the earth so much that he seemed more radiant than she remembered. ‘Annwyl un’ he said softly. She gingerly approached him; he spread his arms for her but when she drew near, he only took her shoulders and placed an airy kiss on her brow. ‘Why have you brought him to me?’ ‘To find answers,’ she murmured. ‘About my choice. It involves him.’ ‘Have him step back,’ he replied. She was shocked at how cold his voice sounded. |
