Red & dangerous! Rawr!
He gave a short nod and pulled out a chair for her. There was some hot herbal tea simmering over the fire, and he poured some of it into Essylt's cup. He wasn't sure she could catch a cold, but better safe than sorry. 'Did you get what you went away for?' he asked.

‘Yes.’ She sat down on the chair but it felt too straight. She wanted to curl up. The pile of blankets seemed warmer, friendlier to snug into, so she moved herself there and leaned against the cool wall. ‘I think…’

'Will you tell me?' Morcant asked, turning in his chair so that he could look at her. 'You don't need to, if you're too tired. It can wait till tomorrow.'

‘I don’t think I can sleep,’ she answered tensely. ‘I promised I’d tell you…I..I need to find some courage for that.’

He brought the cup she'd left standing on the table towards her and sat down next to her. 'That's okay. Take your time,' he said as he held the herbal drink out towards her.

Essylt released the breath that seemed to trap itself below her midriff. She was afraid to even lower her eyes into the cup - what if she saw him dead again, and Rufus falling over, the whole settlement dying while she was high and above the earth in the shape of an owl? Which world she wanted to be part of? She took a sip, then another. It seemed to strengthen her. While he sat beside her, Essylt drank until there was nothing left to stall with. With fingers fumbling, she put down the cup. ‘I don’t think I’m…quite human.’
There. The words were out.

What did one say to that? Morcant pressed his lips together. Of course Essylt was different, her powers uncanny - but he'd never thought of her as something that wasn't human. 'How so?' he heard himself say while his mind was still trying to wrap itself around the concept.

She moistened her lips once, twice. ‘Do you…You know, the owl. The one you cannot see.’

'Yes, what of it? Did it tell you to go out tonight?'

‘No, I asked it to lead me.’ She looked down, on the untidy heap of blankets. How to explain this? How could she possibly describe man made from moonbeams and feathers, a creature that was both soft and stirring? Essylt shifted, arranged the blanket around her as though she were sitting like a baby bird in a nest. She felt him close to her, shoulder to shoulder, and thought about his hands. They had wanted to touch her so badly; she’d felt the need of him vibrating through her skin. ‘He has an origin. A…a man of sorts. His name is Udd Wyll. I met him once before, but I couldn’t tell you. I was frightened.’

'A man of sorts?' he repeated, feeling as though there was nothing she could say that would surprise him more. 'You mean... one of the Good Folk?'

‘Exactly like one.’ He voice had dropped to a whisper. She didn’t know why; perhaps she was afraid that Rufus was standing on the other side again, taking in every drop of information he could extract from them. ‘He looks human, Morcant, only so radiant and…soft. He has feathers like that of an owl and something that is a bill, but it only reached to half of his face. He told me things. Like who I am. We’re related. He made children once with a human girl. But it was long ago, I think.’

His mother had often told him stories about the Good Folk. When a girl from their settlement had disappeared, it was whispered that she'd run off with a Faerie lover. Later they discovered it had been something rather less romantic: the girl had been abducted and molested by Roman soldiers. Many of the elder women still gave preference to the initial rumour, saying that her lover from the Other world had abandoned her soon after her departure. Morcant passed a hand across his face. 'I see. So there is part of the Good Folk in you...'

She swallowed, braiding her hands in her lap. ‘It explains…what I can do. But…It would mean I am different from everyone. It’s distressing. He told me I musn’t hate myself.’

'If you give me one example of two people being exactly the same in every way, I will believe you're different from everyone else. And only then,' Morcant stated gruffly. 'It's not so different from having a talent in woodsculpting, or a knack at net-mending, Essylt.'

‘You’re fooling yourself,’ she said, an expression of bitterness crossing her face. ‘I’ve seen what I can accomplish when I get upset.’ She looked at him, searching his face. ‘You have seen it! On the hill…they were only three men, Morcant…He, Udd Wyll, he showed me my choice in the water. It was –’ But no. She wouldn’t tell him those images. Essylt remembered how he had responed after his fall in the river. So afraid that Romans would soon spill out to endanger her. ‘I saw myself flying away from you. He said I can decide to, to…cross the border.’

He pressed his lips together and scowled at the fire. Well, that was very clear. Her words left no doubt whatsoever. 'I see. So you will choose to be among them?' His voice sounded distant and cool, even to himself. 'That is good to know, I suppose.'

For a moment she just sat very still, not sure if she wasn’t somehow dreaming this whole thing. Had she said anything wrong? Oh Epona, was it because the blood that flowed through her? ‘I don’t know what I’ve...what I’ve done to you so suddenly.’

'Oh, you've done nothing. Apparently I have been fooling myself.' He glanced at her. 'I apologize for trying to make you feel better when you clearly don't want to be cheered up.'

‘Morcant!’ She jumped up, her heart thumping against her breast. For a fleeting, frightening moment she thought that they were being tricked; that perhaps the Fair Folk was twisting their conversation for their own cruel amusement. ‘If I’ve hurt you, I’m sorry! I really don’t…I don’t get this.’

It took him only two steps to be in front of her, and then he grabbed her shoulders. 'I couldn't care less what kind of blood runs through your veins,' he started in a quiet voice, 'I really don't. If you want to go, I will not stop you. But tell me why.'

She flinched back, but the fingers that dug into her shoulders made it hard. Her hands were still so unsteady; she wished she could put her in front of them and defend herself if he was going to hit her – his face looked like he might, it was even more distorted than yesterday. But even if he was going to, she couldn’t allow her hands to block him. Definitely not. It was too dangerous, she was too dangerous in moments like these. ‘I – I don’t know, Morcant,’ she managed instead. ‘I hardly understand these things…’

The look she gave him was so full of fragility and fright that for a moment, it made it impossible for him to think straight. No wonder she'd want to leave if he kept losing his temper, a little voice said in his mind. He tried to shake it off. He was not going to let her go. 'That makes two of us,' he said, trying to curb the conflicting feelings that fought inside him.

She shook her head, pulling her shoulders up though he was clenching them like a drowning man clutches something that helps keeping him afloat. She didn’t know what to say.

'I don't want you to go.' His voice still had a rough edge to it. He bent forward, one hand letting go of her shoulder to cup her face. Stroking the soft, cool skin with his fingertips, he pulled her against him. 'I really don't.'

Did he think she wanted to leave this world behind so much? Hadn’t she struggled hard enough to protect the ones that lived here, because she loved them? She swallowed, her face nearly pressed against his chest while she felt how he held her by her shoulder and face. There was still a lump in her throat, preventing her to speak.

He might as well be talking to the door, for all the reactions she was giving. It wounded him. What had he hoped, that she'd press herself against him and swear that she would never leave him? Bah, he was too old for childish wishes such as those. Her body was against his, though, and he could feel every curve through the fabric of her tunic. Morcant swallowed. She really had some of the Good Folk in her, he thought. What else could explain why he was willing to go through fire for her? But if she had put a spell on him, he found that he did not mind. As long as she was with him, her breasts pressing against his chest - then he wouldn't mind at all. If she left him, he'd go crazy.

Finally she managed to bring a hand up, putting it on his chest, close to her face. ‘Do you think I’m cruel?’
