Eden Studios returns, does this mean TDU3 or perhaps something else?![]() TDU3 or not TDU3? That is the question! In business some strange things can happen that can basically result in a complete orbit of circumstances, companies close down and then re-open as something new but then the new shuts and we find ourselves back with the previous starting afresh, almost like a resurrection of sorts. This looks like it could be the case with the now defunct Eden Games who as we all know made the fantastic Test Drive Unlimited (TDU) and the why why why?!! sequel of Test Drive Unlimited 2. Now though it looks like we have a new old new company in Eden Studios, if you follow the link you can see they are looking for staff to work on the “game development of a [sports] car game” and that a very familiar face shows itself in the domain registration details; none other than Eden Game co-founder and tduck owning Mr David Nadal. ![]() LINK TO EDEN GAMES WEBSITE So what does this mean? Does it mean a Test Drive Unlimited 3 is coming? Does it mean a game like TDU but not TDU is coming by those behind TDU and TDU 2? I don’t know to be honest and sure enough a number of the main people behind TDU now work at Ivory Tower on The Crew which is due later this year and is excitedly said to be “the spiritual successor to Test Drive Unlimited”. If the name doesn’t ring a bell then all you need to know that is even before TDU came this wonderful studio brought us games such as V-Rally (and it’s successors) and the incredibly good NFS: Porsche Unleashed, so they do know how to make a damn fine racing game when they put their minds to it. ![]() (Source: TurboDuck, Eden Games) |

Well, it's definitely more than just a rumor. We know Eden Games is getting prepared to develop a new racing game (whether it be TDU3 or a successor to it). "For the game development of a sports car game, EDEN GAMES is recruiting..." (Eden Games Website). And Eden Games released a statement much earlier saying that the reason TDU 2 wasn't as good as the developers wanted and anticipated was because Atari was giving them unrealistic deadlines. I'm sure now that Eden Games is independent, they'll be able to spend more time and work a lot more closely with their next game and make it the best car driving game franchise ever made EDIT: And hopefully they'll release a BETA before they launch the game so they will get some feedback from users and improve on it from there. I started playing TDU 2 today, haven't played in hella long. I forgot how fun this game is played for 3 hours straight with an Escalade. I'm actually not that excited about the Crew this year, being only multiplayer based and not that many vehicles to choose from. I hope they scrap the whole TDU b.s. and rework on the game's physics a bit more. It felt way too unreal to be enjoyable. They should also bring it in with a new name so people can forget the trauma of the previous TDU game and give it a new life of sorts. The only reason i like TDU is because of their expansive map to ride around in. |

I'm sure they will. TDU 2 used a very basic in house engine (Havok physics) and was not put together very well. I hope they use something more like the SnowDrop Engine (look up "the division" on Youtube). Somebody really needs to make a game with the same customizable features of The Crew, the soft body physics like in BeamNG, the large amount of cars and the dealers and the houses like TDU 2, the off-road physics close to SpinTires, and the realistic driving experience, similar to that of City Car Driving or even the original TDU 1. This would be the game everyone's been waiting for only it'll be heavy on your specs unless they find a way to increase performance with all those features. |

It is and I did some research: they say it takes 2 hours in a high speed sports car and 13 hours if you go the speed limits and stop at the lights. |

Who's got the Test Drive IP anyway? Las I heard it was being auctioned off for $1.5 million after Atari filed for bankrupcy, but I've never seen any official news about who bought it. |

TDU was put for auction in mid 2013 but i don't think anyone bought it. Maybe this racing game Eden speaks of is a TDU 3 afterall? Announcement of auction with prices: http://www.bloomberg.com/article/2013-05-29/at8nKJgr9h.w.html List of winners: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=631891 |

So basically you rephrased what I already said and provided 2 google results that confirm it but don't really answer my question. May I suggest a career in politics?

I did some digging in the United States Patent and Trademark Office. It seems Accolade, the original developer and publisher of the series, first applied for the trademark Test Drive in 1990 only to abandon it mid 1991. A new trademark for Test Drive was filed in 1996 by Accolade and is still alive today, with the last listed owner being ATARI, INC. CORPORATION DELAWARE 417 FIFTH AVE. NEW YORK NEW YORK 10016 (who acquired Accolade in 1999). So this basically proves that Atari still holds the rights for Test Drive video games. Moving on. If you'll remember back in 2012 there were reports of Atari shutting down Eden Games. Some websites claimed they have information from Atari reps that it won't be fully closed, but to my knowledge there hasn't been any official confirmation. Atari's 2011/2012 consolidated results clearly state that "Eden Games has been accounted for as “Discontinued Operations” under IFRS 5". According to the French commercial register there are 2 entries for EDEN GAMES. The first was registered in 1997 and also went by the alias of Eden Studios. This is the "old" Eden, but it doesn't say much about its current status. It does say however that the company hasn't filed any Financial status reports since 2012, and the last shareholder decision regarding the company was filled in 26/09/2012. This fits the idea that the studio was indeed closed for good. The second entry is for a new company registered in 30/04/2014. It is based in Lyon just like the old Eden Games, which may confirm that at least part of the team is made of ex-employees. So what do we make of all this? Well whoever they are, if they plan to make a TDU3 they will need to strike a deal with Atari for the trademark. And being a new company allegedly formed by ex-Eden/Atari developers, I don't think they have the financial resources to obtain this licence and develop such a massive game on their own. This means they would need backing from a major publisher. So who would be interested in dumping a load of cash into a newly-formed developer who's employees although have a lot of experience, are also My guess is that whatever it's called, it won't be on the scale of TDU1 or 2, it will be a smaller racing game. V-Rally 4?

I'm sure they will get backing from a big publisher, I mean, look at Ivory Tower, they hadn't created any games yet but they got backed by Ubisoft and developed The Crew so I'm sure that Eden will get a backer, because they'll need one. @Automotive Gaming: Mobile gaming is an entirely different market and is not nearly as profitable as the PC/Console gaming industry and nobody is going to sit on the couch and play a low quality TDU 2 all day on their smartphone, no offense. |

Yes, but you're missing the point. Ivory Tower devs came from TDU1 which was well received compared to TDU2. And Ubisoft created its own game with The Crew, it didn't have to buy or license a trademark. I'm not saying it's not possible, just that it's unlikely. We'll have to wait and see. |

What makes you think Ivory Tower is any different from Eden? What makes you think "The Crew" won't be TDU3 under a different name? Really, why would Ubisoft dump a lot of money into a brand that has suffered terribly with TDU2, when they can just create a new brand, advertise it a lot, and release it? The Crew is really similar to the TDU series (open world, play with friends, shit like that), Ivory Tower is also based in Lyon, France, and consists of many people from Eden... I say The Crew and Ivory Tower are both phoenixes risen from the ashes of TDU2 |

I don't understand where you're heading with all of this. Who said The Crew isn't TDU3?
Who said Ubi should have dumped money into the TDU brand? I said just the opposite. I hate to repeat myself, but here it goes: Ivory Tower devs came from TDU1. Read this interview with Ahmed Boukhelifa, TDU1 producer who quit Eden and founded of Ivory tower in 2007 along with other key members from Eden. He says he didn't want to make a sequel, he wanted to start from scratch, that was the idea from the beginning. Other Eden devs joind in 2008, long before TDU2:
And then there's the fact that they're getting help from Reflections (Driver) and other Ubisoft studios. IMO if Reflections has anything to do with the handling mode, the game will be 10 times better than TDU2. |
