3D Blueprint Tutorial

First of all, start by fitting up your blueprints.
Don't forget to lock them, to avoid to move them by accident.

Now, on the command panel, go to Create -> Shapes -> Splines -> Line.

Go to "Left View" and start drawing.
Draw a Line from the start point to the end point only.
Right Click, and convert it to "Editable Spline".

Scroll Down, and choose "Insert".
Click on the Spline where you want to insert a "Point" and place it where you want.
Repeat this until you get the shape you want.

Add As many points as you want.
Scroll Up and click "Vertex".
By clicking on a "point", move it if needed to accurate your line.

Go to "Top View".
As you can see, the line was draw on the left Plan.
Choose all points, and move them where they meant to be.

There you go.
Now repeat this until you get drawn all the lines you want/need.

Once done, just reset the pivots and mirror the lines to get a full shape (even if it's not really needed).
Now you have a 3D Blueprint and you can start your model.

8l uhh.. not trying to be unappreciative, but if you're using splines as blueprints, all you're doing is adding in a process that doesn't need to be there.. splines are for creating surfaces without having to poly model them..

using splines in this mannor defeats the purpose of using splines :/

You wrong bro.
Before using them, I thought like that as well. But, now, I don't do a model without using them. Once your 3D Blueprint's done, you don't need your planars no more. Once modeling, it becomes much easier to fit your polys, your model becomes much more accurate and you model much faster!

Now, as I said to Threep, if you want to Model Splines, or NURBS, I suggest you to use Maya, Rhino or Solid Works bro

you advise me? ..I'm trying real hard to be delicate with this matter bro - but I don't understand ..wtF would I want to model in Rhino, or Maya, or any other app for that matter, when Max is more than capable of doing the same shit and always has been

and considering the aforementioned, this "tutorial" is completely mislabeled - it should be named some like.. "how to create 3d blueprints with splines for poly modeling, which if you knew how to spline model, would be the model itself and not the 3d blueprint for it"

As I said, over and over again, Max NURBS are shitty to work with, that's why I said, "if you want to spline model, use Maya or Rhino".

I'm not been around saying "I'm spline modeling this, or that", so proove I did it, before saying it bro.

Now, stop acting like I'm frauding people. I did this tuto because, after I've done my spline cage for the Zenvo, you asked me to teach you to do it. So I was thinking you were talking about a spline cage.

Now, as I said to threep, If you want to use NURBS, and shit yourself to get a correct surface, having Rhino or Maya, doing the same shit but much more easily, go head!
You want a tuto (to prouve you I'm not frauding no one here and once again you attacking me without reason), You'll have it tomorrow bro! Count on it.

why the hell you think I was asking you to teach me SPLINE MODELING ffs.. I've been poly modeling in Max for almost a decade dude - so why exactly would I, or any one of the established modelers here need to use this tutorial? ..we don't, it's a waste of time - I mean seriously bro, why model a cage if not to create a surface from that cage.. a 3d blueprint? ..come on man :lol:

and I'm not trying to attack you, I'm just telln it like it is - and please, stop saying "you want to use nurbs" ..because like this so called tutorial, it makes no sense lol

nurbs = non-uniform rational basis spline

eg- nurbs are splines, splines are nurbs

I still wonder why you talk about nurbs when I talk about spline. NOT NURBS. Extrude a spline and see what happens:


You mix up two different things, pal.

See, thats why I asked for showing step 2: extruding those splines will just create the shape of the car. No NURBS used.

the purpose of Spline modelling is not just to create a 3d blueprint. using the Spline modifiers you are supposed to convert the spline cage into an object.
I was working on my 250R's fuel tank via spline cage following a tut on YT but the end result was disastrous.
These were the tuts i followed:



So yeah the title should be renamed to Spline 3d blueprint tutorial. Makes more sense then :)

I know how to create splines, and I can get a decent surface out of them.. but the results Slyde had been showing were just like "wow cool, those are some freakn awesome results for how little of time he's been doing it - I wanna learn how to spline model like that!" - and to find out it's just regular ol poly modeling.. it's like :fuckingfacepalm: :lol:

not exactly.. it's from Slyde uppn images of spline cages and surface models and dropping them in the same post - and being that nobody creates a spline cage as a modeling reference, and instead creates a spline cage for its intended purpose, which is to generate the model itself, Slyde's right, it was all in my head :suicide:

I can Spline Modeling, yes. I do Spline cages to support my Poly modeling, Yes. I prefer Spline modeling opun Poly Modeling, No. I said I use Spline modeling on my models, never. That's why I didn't understood you post!

I Spline Model (Surfaces) on Rhino, not on Max. That's why I "advised" you to use it instead. Max's surface are really hard to work with...

For Threep, you can extrude your splines, yes, but for what? Instead of that, you can just create CV curves and create a surface of them!



But, just tell me, is that what you want to learn (last PDF)? If yes, I'll do you a proper Tuto tomorrow, if not, I honestly don't see what you need bro...

that's all well and good bro.. if that helps you, that's fantastic - but as I said in messenger @Fb, I was simply under the impression that you've been spline modeling this whole time (since the Zenvo) and considering that nobody creates a spline cage for anything other than it's intended purpose (which is to create a surface from it), I misunderstood what you've been doing this whole time lol

and for the last time, no, nurbs surfaces is not what I'm looking to do :cstmrsrvc: lol
