![]() 1st. Try to find a picture of the wheel you want, by it's name or by the name of the car. If you're lucky enough to find a perfect side view picture just grab it, and remember, the bigger, the better. Profile pictures are also important so grab a couple of those. I got these of a Mercedes Benz C63 AMG Estate 2012 (just a montage) ![]() 2nd. (perfect side view pics) Open the photo in Photoshop (or any other editing tool) and cut the photo to the exact rim size. Getting some tire ain't a biggie but the rim must all be there. (in case the photo isn't exactly perfect you might have to deform a bit the selection to get the wheel). I did have to deform a tiny bit the selection in order to have the rim and after croping this is what I have: ![]() If you check the size it's exactly 595 x 591 px, so I'll just change the size to have a 595 x 595 image, making the wheel perfectly round, also had to rotate it a little bit to have it symmetrical. I like to work with dark backgrounds and so just painted it black and scaled down the wheel, like so (optional): ![]() 3rd. Fire up your Zmodeler and add the image at the Left view. ![]() You also might want to tick this on: ![]() 4th. Before you can start modeling you'll need to make some math, do decide how many segments (cross points) will the cylinder have. To know that you'll have to multiply the number of spokes untill you get an even number: 16x2=32 (usable) 16x3=48 (usable)... I want the best quality so I'm going with 48. After centering it with Exact Transform you can see that it fits perfectly so we good to go. ![]() 5th. In a Top or Front view delete the unecessary crap, like this: ![]() 6th. Scale it to the edge of the rim, Left view: ![]() 7th. Now here's why you need profile pictures. Extrude the cylinder and shape it as the profile picture, try to make it smooth and use the lights on the picture to guide you were to extrude. ![]() ![]() 8th. Now that the shape's done you can start making the spokes. Make a copy of the cylinder and create a Surface, doesn't matter how many polygons, and use it to model the spokes shape. Don't forget to select all of the cylinders polygons before attaching the surface so you can easily detach it later. Use reference verts for the spokes, just make half of the shape and detach it (or delete the cylinder's polygons. ![]() 9th. Duplicate and mirror the shape, attach and weld the verts together. Push it backwards and extrude it untill it shows trough the cylinder, rename the objects (should have 2 at least) and export to OBJ. Fire up Max. ![]() 10th. Select the spoke thingy and Bolean it with the cylinder, cut and export it to OBJ again. ![]() ![]() 11th. Back to ZM. Import it and duplicate the spoke. Grab a calculator and divide 360 (degrees) by the number of spokes 360/16=22,5 and that gives us the rotation angle. Attach both spokes and fill the gap between, use the cylinder's polygons as reference. If needed duplicate the cylinder and use it's verts to fill the gap. If done correctly should turn out like this. ![]() 12th. Duplicate and mirror it, then calculate, flip and attach both into 1 object.. Weld the verts and fill the gap again. Before anything select all polygons so you can later detach it. ![]() Now you can either exture the spokes in depth and leave it that way or (my way) bevel the edges so back to Max. 13th. Select the polygons and hit Bevel options, tweak at will and detach after you're done. Export back to ZM. ![]() 14th. Delete half of the objects, select all of the rim's polygon and attach the bevel to it. Weld them all together. After welding, with the polygons select Calculate the normals, wich should smooth the bevel. ![]() 15th. Duplicate, mirror, flip and calculate and then calculate again with polygons selected to smooth the bevel. Attach both together and weld the verts. Now detach the bevel from the spokes. ![]() 16th. Copy rotate and weld the necessary verts to make the wheel. ![]() 17th. Create another cylinder with the same segments as the rim's. Scale it to the inner part. ![]() 18th. Extrude the surface dettached from the bevel. Delete half of it and work the verts into position. ![]() 19th. Attach it to the bevel and weld the verts. Select the extrude polygons and calculate, making the bevel completely smooth from the spoke to the extrude. ![]() ![]() Duplicate, flip normals attach and weld verts, after that just duplicate enough to complete the rim. 20th. To make the bolt holes and other holes simply use Max's bolean technique. Good luck, this is the best I can explain and if properly used you can make a wheel entirely on Max. |

Just wanted to show how I make wheels, after so many requests.. could be done exaclty the same in max tho, and mixed with your tutorial I think it's possible to create some hot wheels. |
