PROLOGUE In the beginning, there were four worlds, each ruled by a different immortal beast: the asp, Arayo, the halcyon, Icuda, the basilisk, Rimm, and the wyvern, Kestrel. Each beast had their own ideas of how to rule, and each their own methods of obtaining the power to do so. Some relied on kindness and good to achieve their goals. Others chose to stand aside and let their worlds progress unimpeded. But there was one beast who was not afraid to use raw strength to put an end to anyone who defied him. The wyvern Kestrel was the most violent of the four Immortals. He called his world “Kormada,” a name meaning “forest planet” in the language of the Immortals, and it was well named. Before Kestrel seized control, every last inch of the planet was covered in dense rainforests. The current inhabitants of Kormada were well adapted to forest life, but the wyvern's interest in becoming a god would prove to be their downfall. Trees were a hindrance to the one who wanted to see all, and so he destroyed them, but so too did he destroy the ones he had intended to rule. Vexed by his own error, Kestrel devised a method by which to steal from his counterparts and create life on Kormada once again. From Arayo he stole the vision of a black beast of four legs and four hard hooves. From Icuda came the sight of a winged monstrosity with a flowing mane and tail. Lastly, from the basilisk Rimm was robbed the memory of a creature with a head so beautifully crafted that the wyvern could not turn it away. From these visions Kestrel created his own unique beings to fill the void of his recklessness: the Kormadian Equines. For a god without a liege is not a god at all. Under the wyvern's ever-watchful eye, the equines flourished and Kormada became theirs. As a testament to the planet's initial state, Kestrel allowed a select few of the original inhabitants to remain, but the equines—who would later call themselves Kormadians, as though they had been there all along—demanded they be kept at bay. Imperfect beings had no place among the equines. Kestrel, eager to fulfill the wishes of his subjects lest they believe him less than a god, made the decision to separate the supercontinent Avia into several smaller continents to keep the non-equines isolated from his creations. A series of violent earthquakes nearly ripped the planet to its core, for Kestrel was inexperienced and did not yet know the full extent of his abilities. This event would come to be called The Great Split. The death toll numbered in the millions, but the deed had been done. One continent had become four: The Northern and Southern Mainlands, the Offland, and the place that would become home to the non-equines—the Marredland. But Kestrel's act had resulted in some unanticipated developments among the equines who survived. Two alliances had formed. Those who were loyal to the wyvern called themselves the Lights. Those who were no longer loyal—mainly those whose herds had been killed in the Great Split, or who had become trapped in the Marredland with the non-equines—called themselves the Darks. Kestrel, weakened from the act of separating earth and rock, could only stand by and watch as his creations went to war. Here you go all...this is the basis for the Kormada book series I've been trying to write for years. Maybe it'll give you some ideas =P |
