. . . let me out of this dream . . .

I wade from the white shores and into the salty water until I feel the briny water lick at the underside of my stomach, and I stand there. The rhythm of the waves pulls me back and forth, and I have to brace my hooves in the fine sand to keep myself from being pulled away completely. The horizon seems to beckon to me—or trying to beckon, at least. At one point in my life I might have heard its call, back when I was much younger and much more wary of the world, but not now.

I won’t try and lie to myself. It’s not like my life is grand, or that I have become a better individual, or even that I have accomplished anything magnificent. I am a simple character, simple-minded perhaps (some would probably argue that fact), and it reflects in what I have become. And guess what? I’m okay with that—I enjoy it, in fact.

You see, unlike many of the progeny of the three “Dark kings,” I am not power hungry, or care the slightest about governments, or am even all that Dark. I never have been, and I never will. There are not many in the world that know my name, and I like it like that—in fact, I think it’d be quite annoying to have other stallions pestering me about their petty politics. I care little about my father and his kind.

However, my sister and my herd—I am a goofball when it comes to them (in a good way, I hope). I’m not at all good with any of that touchy-feely stuff, but I hope they know that they are cared for, and protected. I sigh inwardly with these thoughts, lowering my head and blowing a long breath over the foamy surface. Suddenly pivoting (well, as suddenly as one can move while submerged in water), I head back towards the shore, releasing a rumbling call over the sands and through the woods.

i've not yet begun to defile myself.
The young maiden wanders the land quietly, neither seeking company nor turning it away. Briefly, she wonders after her family, or the ones who raised her. For a moment, the dusty black considers that they very well may be dead. She can't tell if that bothers her or not. She had no way to find Akita..or even the family that would have come from Vilarsei, the mare who had given birth to her. There was no way of knowing who she was related to, and that didn't really matter to the striped girl. She turns toward the coast where she thinks Aeson might be.

Before long, his call reaches her, informing the mare that she has assumed correctly. Perhaps he was calling a herd meeting. Part of this disconcerted her. She didn't like being in a large group and was much more suited and used to more solitary situations. She nickers to Aeson upon seeing his bay hide. "Aeson," she says calmly, making him aware that she has come. "Hello again." And Muse falls silent. She feels more comfortable that way. He sees her, and she has come as he wished. Was there need for more?

Thara hadnt left the borders of Weeping Towers since returning, but she had kept to herself until her wounds were completely healed. Some placed on her hide still showed shiny new skin but most of her new scars were covered in a mix of white and brown hairs that only seemed to add to her brindled appearance. She had been so afraid of being judged by her herdmates that she had only seen aeson since her return, and had made a point of avoiding other mares until she was mostly healed up. But when she heard Aeson call, her head jerked up and in his direction. She was never too far away from him, but she didnt want to look too needy. She waited about ten minutes before lunging into a canter, and it was only a matter of minutes before she could see him and a younger maiden, and all she could do was smile at him.

She nodded to the younger female and slowed to a walk till she was right next to him, and nuzzled his shoulder briefly. These little forms of physical contact and affection were what kept the damaged mare grounded and focused on the future. She was a changed mare. While she was still close to him she breathed in that familiar scent that made her feel so at home, so comfortable. A soft smile that only he could put on her face made a subtle appearance as she looked at him and finally spoke. "Hey, you! Sorry I've been scarce, but the scars are almost gone. Before I forget, I would really like to talk to you later." Her gaze lingered on his, and her soft voice was almost melodic before she turned to the youngling. "I'm sorry, I didnt mean to seem rude. My name is Thara, whats yours?" Her voice was just as soft as when she spoke to the younger female, realizing that this mare was probably around the same age bristol would be if Thara had kept her. Now her prospective conversation with Aeson made her all the more nervous as they waited for more herd members to arrive.

. . . let me out of this dream . . .

As I come to a slow halt on the white shoreline, I glance around—ears pricking as they rotate, my brown eyes cast about while I scan the forest that rises suddenly from the pearly sands. In all the years that have passed since I decided to become a herd stallion, I have never held a proper herd meeting. Can you believe that? I like to think that I’m not a total failure in this, but the facts seem to point otherwise. No matter though, I let it roll off my shoulders as I wait for the mares to heed my call (just hoping that they will acknowledge it as such).

Is it an instinct thing?

I purse my lips, standing comfortably with my weight distributed evenly across the fine sand. A little shiver shudders down my spine as a cold, winter-crisped breeze wafts from the ocean’s surface, freezing my wet skin and raking through the mess of my dark mane. The frosty season has seemed to arrive quickly, coating the Weeping Towers in a light, patchy dusting of snow that gradually grows a little deeper the further inland you travel. It is no match for the lofty winters of other continents, but it is still frigid.

Flicking the length of my tail about my muscled flanks, I catch movement up the beach—a dark shadow approaching, quiet and unsure in her step. I return her nicker when she draws near, my lips soft as I reach out to her to touch my muzzle to hers briefly. “Muse,” I smile warmly. She is a timid creature—reminds me very much of myself at times—and I am thoroughly pleased that she has decided to join me, despite her wariness around others. Perhaps her herd mates will help her.

Turning away from the dusty black mare, I see the white-streaked hide of Thara only strides away. I grin at her, the skin of my shoulder twitching beneath her touch, and I reach to press my muzzle gently against her neck. I’m terrible at any of this physical stuff, but she needs it, so I force myself out of my comfort zone. Way out.

However, I can’t help the sudden hardening of my features when she mentions her scars—my gaze skittering across the now-gray wounds that lace her body. I should have been there with her, I should have prevented the whole thing from happening. That’s what a good herd stallion, a good protector and provider, does right?

So caught up am I in my anger-guilt that I nearly miss what she follows with, the words only sinking in as she continues to address Muse. Before I forget, I would really like to talk to you later. Anxiousness strikes me first. Is something wrong? Did I do something wrong? What could she possibly want to talk about that is so important that she has to remind herself? I bite my lips before I press them into a hard line, my brow knitting together as I try to pick apart the complexity of a female’s mind. The cause is hopeless. So clearing my throat softly, I bow my head towards her. “Of course,” I murmur, trying to keep the tremble from my tone.

Shaking out my damp mane in an effort to distract myself, I broaden my attention to both mares. “We will see if any more of your herd mates arrive, but I will proceed for now,” I glance around once again, trying not to be worried that so many have hidden their faces. “Thank you for joining me,” I add, returning my gaze to Muse and Thara, smiling at them bashfully, grateful that they haven’t given up on me. “I have no pressing matters to discuss, but I wanted to check on you. With winter upon us, and the threats we have endured, I want to make sure you’re okay—if there's anything I can do,” I look to both of them expectantly, my ears pricked.
