Starling

Standing amid the Autumn colors, Starling seemed to fit right in. The brilliancy of the glow of her coat was magnified in the orange settings of the season. Being the simple mare she was, there was no flamboyant show to be seen. Starling didn’t prance around like many young mares her age, there was no showboating or pleas to catch the all too easy to catch attention of stallions seeking another pet. She wasn’t much fond of that crowd, so it would make sense her actions avoided mimicking what attracted them. Instead she settled comfortably by the pastoral, slow moving stream.

Blue eyes followed the movement of the stream, content in the company of the peaceful trickle. Obviously, she was here for a reason, as all other mares are. Perhaps that is the one thing she shared in common with the crowd she wasn’t fond of. In all honesty, Starling wouldn’t hastily follow away with the first eligible stallion that approached. She wanted a home, not just to pacify the social standards expected of a young mare. She was unsure herself what more she wanted from life, besides peace and quiet and the occasional company when she sought it out. The red roan was a friendly being, often mistaken as naive because of her sweet innocent stare. While young and beautiful, there was a special kind of flame to this one, it just wasn’t bent on burning those around her rather than offering a comforting warmth.

A E S O N.

It is funny, really, how I find myself ending up here. Over and over…and over and over again. Every single time, it seems like I leave cursing these borders and the desperation that fouls their reputation—nearly without fail, I promise to myself (and the whole of Kormada) that I will not return to such a dreary place ever again, that I will sequester myself and my mares in my hallowed grounds away from the darkness. And yet…here I am. Again. Trudging through the mass of motley groups that break off, intertwine, leech from each other, all in efforts of mingling and feeding the many dissimilar dreams that take root in a place like this.

Funny, isn’t it? Yeah, right.

Tossing my head in a display of irritability that is more of a show than anything, with the odd pattern of my mane waving back and forth at the crest of my neck, I continue forward. Perhaps it is the idea of getting to know a lady, in actually courting her for a few moments, before inviting her back to my home—or her accepting an invitation—is more appealing than offering such a personal request to a complete stranger. Even so, it is still only that—a few mere moments. Even I, a grumpy little hermit for a good part of my life, knows that there is more needed to truly know someone. But, I don’t make the rules, and this is what the fates have given us.

A game of trial and error, cat and mouse, whatever you’d like to call it. I can imagine whatever heavenly beings exist looking down on the rest of us mortals, laughing and jeering at our hasty promises and grave mistakes. Ugh, why, why so bitter?

It is a beautiful autumn day, after all. Caught in the middle of the season, the trees have changed their leaves, holding their colorful cloaks proudly in the last weeks before they fall and give way to frosty winter. I do enjoy and appreciate it, I really do, but instead of thrusting myself into the buzzing crowds, I wander alone (as is usual for me…ignoring the very purpose for this land, of course). I walk in the middle of a trickling stream—yes, right through the center of it—my dark hooves plodding through the shallow current as though the banks could act as barriers to ward off the rest of them.

Caught up in my mildly bitter mood and making a determined point to ignore my surroundings, it is only natural that I turn a corner and stumble across a mare. She is alone, much like myself. However, not like myself, she looks peaceful—obviously enjoying this fair autumn day and the beauty that it holds. And, being my oh-so graceful self, here I come parading in, sloshing through the crystal water like I own the place or something. Immediately I stop my racket once I notice her, but I already know that it is too late. I stare at her for a moment, trying to gather my scattered mind, before I finally compose myself somewhat and clear my throat.

“Uh, hello there,” I give her a half-hearted, embarrassed grin, “I’m sorry for…disturbing your…peace.” My ears splay to the side in my awkwardness, and I shuffle my weight, inwardly chastising myself before I glance around, trying to distract both her and myself from my graceful display. “It is a beautiful day,” I muse, my voice nearly lilting into a question as my gaze slowly, bashfully, returns to the red roaned mare.

I keep running into walls that I can't break down —
Let me out of this dream.
