The ocean seems to swallow him whole, every fiber, every stitch. These journeys seem to consume him, turn him into nothing but ocean salt and sea foam. He keeps her close, the pretty golden mare that he had stumbled upon in the homeless, like a crow with a new shiny trinket in his beak. He is there when the tide threatens to drown her, to steal her for itself. His lips find her withers and offer reassurance as their hooves meet the ocean floor. The sand stirs around their legs like volcanic ash all too eager to spew from its fiery mountain hole.

The ocean releases him reluctantly, only because it knows he will return - he cannot stay away. He licks the salt from his lips, water dripping from his whiskers to the ground where his hooves sink into the wet sand. He motions for Daphne to come stand beside him, because even this close to home there are dangers lurking.

“We can rest here awhile.” He says, looking back at the pretty golden mare before motioning towards a grove of shrubby trees. He leads her with sweeping strides through the salt grasses until shadows dapple their bodies. “I am glad you’re here.” He says in a voice not unlike the rush of ocean waves and the ragged whispers through the grasses.

Daphne

The mare hated the unpredictable seas. In the blink of an eye they could change from calm to a monstrosity, trying to drag her down into the murky deep. She always managed to pass through it fine, though this time the reassurance from Icarus made the journey much less frightening, though equally exhausting. Her heart raced when she felt her hooves finally touch the sandy ocean floor. They were so close to the shore, her legs using what little strength they had left to bring her there. The journey across the ocean had been a long one, When she finally pulled herself up out of the water, her legs quivered beneath her. But still she must push herself forward. She didn't want her new claimer to see her as weak. As a liability to his herd. Daphne moved beside Icarus, only to follow beside him into the brush. She wanted to badly to rest, and she was so happy that he was letting her.

Daphne's ears pricked forward as she heard him speak. No one had ever told her they were glad she was there. "Y-You are? Why?" She kept her voice to a whisper, though it wasn't hard considering she was already so soft spoken. She waited until they were cloaked in shadow before she bent her legs under her and lowered her body into the soft patch of grass Icarus had led her too. The nights were still cold, the warm weather still not fully moved in. The ocean water had been a bit cold, though now she was even colder with the soft breeze that blew against her wet coat. "No one has ever treated me so kindly...Or have been glad to have me around..." Daphne spoke more to herself this time, lowering her muzzle down into the grass a bit as she shivered ever so slightly. She could already feel that she would be happy with Icarus, and she hoped the he would be happy with her. Even if he didn't care for her in the way she so deeply had hoped to be cared for, at least she would be taken care of. And right now, that was enough for her.

Posted Image Even though there is still light in the sky, the twin moons peer from behind a sea of evening clouds, dregs of purple and red bleeding into the salty ocean. He sees all of this from the reflection in her bright, wide eyes, as he smiles down at her. She lay curled beside him, much like the scene the morning before in the Homeless. There is a shyness in her voice, a sense of naivety, of youth not yet blossomed. He presses his lips against her poll as if to hush her worried heart, to chase away her anxiety.

“Perhaps, no one has been worthy of your company.” He whispers into her alabaster mane before pulling away to look at her face. “I only hope that I am, Daphne.” He says in a voice like calm ocean waves and ancient, pock marked stone. He watches the colors shift and fade across her face, and he smiles at the beauty that lay coiled at his feet.

“Tell me, where are you from?” He asks gently.

Daphne

Daphne felt herself relax as Icarus lowered his lips to her poll. It was an affectionate motion she hadn't been expecting from the stallion. Or any stallion at this point in her life. She had assumed he had found her just as another mare for his herd. He was kind, yes, but she was sure he would have no form of love for her, and she had come to terms with that. Perhaps he was this kind to all of his mares? She would find out soon enough, but she tried not to dwell too much on the thought. The last thing she wanted was another disappointment and abandonment. "Oh...I'm not so sure. I don't see how my company is so...desirable..." Daphne let her eyes close for a moment before opening them halfway. "On the contrary...I hope that I am the one worthy of you"

The mare lifted her head and looked up to the stallion, smiling softly up at him, before looking away for a moment. She was glad to be close to him. His question sparked a bit of surprise in her. "Where am I from?" She tilted her head a bit as she thought, trying to remember what the land was called where she was born. She couldn't really remember. She had been so young when she and her mother had to leave, and not much older when her mother had died. "I am sorry...I can't remember. When I was very young me and my mother had to leave, though I cannot recall why. We wandered around for a year or so before she herself died. I then wandered as well, looking for a herd to take me in, but none would for more than a night or so. Then I was lucky enough to find a home for a short period of time in Ceder Helm, though the stallion who had claimed me there disappeared. I am not sure what happened to him, but I can only assume the worst. The other mare there as well had left before I..." Daphne's voice trailed off a bit as she looked away from the stallion. She tried to remain positive about her past, though it was a lonely one at that. She missed her mother dearly, and was still occasionally haunted by her death. She was too young to save her.
