So I thought I might just post here every time I need help with science instead of flooding the chatbox with questions.

August 29th
Rounding off

2. A calculator display shows the result of a calculation to be 57230.357. If it is to be reported to 4 significant figures, it would be best recorded as ...

A. 5723
B. 57230
C. 5.723 x 10-4
D. 5.723 x 104

3. If a sample of a metal has a mass of 26.385 g and a volume of 5.82 cm3, its density is best recorded as ...

A. 4.5 g cm-3
B. 4.53 g cm-3
C. 4.534 g cm-3
D. 4.5335 g cm-3

5. Give the results of the following calculations to the appropriate degree of accuracy.

(a) 0.037 x 0.763
(b) 200.1257 / 7.2
(c) 3.76 x 105 - 276
(d) 0.00137 + 3.762 x 10-4
(e) 3 x 108 x 7.268

If you are going to post the answers to #5 please do like a spoiler toggle, because I want to try to do them without knowing the answers ;) Or you can wait with posting the answers until I have posted mine.

sig fig rules: (these are your life in any chem/bio/math-oriented science labs and you have to memorize them!)

  • every integer that is NOT 0 is significant. ALWAYS [ie, 1.23 has 3 sigfigs. BUT 1000000 has only 1]
  • zeroes BETWEEN two other NON ZERO integers are significant [ie, 0.0001 is ONE sig fig. BUT 0.1001 is 4 sigfigs]
  • zeroes that occur to the RIGHT of a decimal AND the END are significant [ie, .00001 is still one, but .1000 is 4]
  • any zeroes LEFT of the decimal in a number GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO than ten are significant
  • note that it helps (with 3 & 4) to place the number into SCIENTIFIC NOTATION and if you have to remove the zeroes to do so, they ARE NOT significant.

in a problem or calculation with more than one number, report your answer in the LOWEST number of sigfigs used in the problem. NEVER EVER round in the middle of problems; go all the way through or your answer will be wrong

if you ever need a crash course in chemistry or bio, message me. xD i've been tutoring forever, this is what i do

I think I did them correctly, but I'm a little rusty so let me know if you have any questions!

sorry for the double post, but here's a pretty good reference that has everything dealing with significant digits/figures:

NUMBER ONE:
for this, what is big is accuracy vs. precision. accuracy is like....hitting the bullseye, or as close as you can get to it where the 'center' in this analogy is your literature value. precision is how often it can be repeated with the same result. the numbers after your plus/minus sign are the standard error, or how different each answer from that trial was. therefore, the one with the SMALLEST standard error would be the most precise.

NUMBER TWO: see the explanation for the first question; it's the same concept. except here, you are looking for accuracy, or how close to the literature value the answers were.

NUMBER THREE: i honestly am a bit less sure on this one. systematic error is an error within the experiment, while random error is just, you know, crap happens. as there is little else given, i would not be certain on any answer. does your teacher look for 'more right' answers, where all are correct but one is best? if so: my answer is below.

NUMBER SIX: remember that systematic errors are issues within the experiment (which are not going to change with simple repetition) BUT since random error is just silly flukes within the results that are random and do not always occur the same, repetition will help with this.

answers part one

SO. for the second worksheet, the questions are similar and the above explanations should answer any questions. ill provide the answers, and if you need more just let me know!

answers two

I don't understand why the answer in 2 on the handout is B ... what are you looking for when you are searching for accuracy?
