Shalaya felt like she was an old hand at pregnancy by the time she finally dragged her swollen mass onto the sandy beaches of the Quarry. This may have been her first foal but she had talked Paisley through the birth of Ismay, and while carrying her own firstborn, has helped Sendiri with her own pregnancy. Her friend was hardly more than a filly herself, mentally anyway, and even though she was hardly six months along, it was fairly obvious but the vast size she was already reaching that she was carrying twins. Shay had hoped to give birth in spring, so that her foal would have time to adjust to life outside of the womb before winter hit, but it does not seem as though things will work out that way.

The weather still seems fairly warm, which is good considering that her child may not have the time it needs to grow up before winter hits. When the group first found out that Sendiri had conceived a foal with Gethin, their plans changed to wintering in the Marredland where it would be easier for both mare and foal before moving onto the Loftland in the early spring to deliver Paisley and Ismay, then later in the spring, if Sendiri could hold onto her twins that long, going back to the Quarry to deliver her babies. But once again, things had changed. With Sendiri so heavy they could not travel far without endangering both her and her foal. So while Shay gave birth, the others were scouting for a suitable spot in which to winter and then improving it so that it would be at least comfortable for the four adults, one yearling, and one newborn for the winter.

It felt strange to be separated from her adopted family. For years she had travelled alone, and then for more seasons with only Sendiri as company without it ever bothering her. Now, however, she felt bereft. Like a mother hen with her eggs stolen from under her. Only the excited and frightened kicking of her precious cargo helped soothe the lonely feeling and without quite thinking about it, she reaches around to rub soothingly at her baby's most oft targeted spot, right above her kidneys.

Soon instinct took over, and the overdue quality of this pregnancy sped things along. Within an hour she was flat on the ground, halfway through a process more painful than she could imagine. True to her nature, however, she worried more about how Sendiri would handle her birth. If one foal was this bad, how excruciating would twins be?

In the end, however, when her loudly painted daughter was slumbering at her hooves, she would not deny that it was worth it. Her daughter was precious and she could not believe how much such a tiny fragile creature could mean this much to her. With a gentle caress she christens her daughter Heidi and settles down to wait out the night.
