The familiar scent of the Homeless Grounds and its equines soon reached Liska's nostrils. She stirred uncomfortably but pressed onward, her watchful eyes glancing backwards towards her two dear children, Sayre and Lopa. The last time she had been here was years ago, and thinking about it now brought painful memories back to life in the Fjord mare's mind. Ever since she had heard of August's death, she and her children had been without a home or place to go. It had taken Liska a long time to get over the pain that came with his death, but she realized that she needed a place to settle down in and call home. And Lopa and Sayre did, too.

Before she knew it, she was stepping into the Homeless once again, wondering what would lie ahead. She turned her head around and smiled sweetly at her children. "We're here,"she said in a tender, motherly voice that she only used with them. It was still hard for Liska to believe that Lopa had grown so much so quickly; she was already three years old and ready to go find a stallion of her own. And Sayre was only a year behind her. Before long, he would be a full grown stallion looking for a land of his own.

The three equines made their way into the Homeless and sat down near a small pool of water. Lopa sighed softly and sat down on the soft grass, lowering her head to take a sip of the cool water. She and her mother were both tired after the long walk to get here, and needed the cool water to quench their thirst. Sayre, however, still seemed full of energy and wandered around curiously, but made sure not to stray too far.

The blood red stallion watched the little group for a distance away. The mare he recognized as a Fjord. He assumed that the two younger horses following her were her children. The other female looked to be nearly of age, but the youngest was a colt. Corr pinned his ears back. Maybe he didn't want to approach the little group after all. He turned his scarred face away and his body followed. He walked a few paces, weighing the pros and cons of approaching the group. The colt was older than his son, Bouron, but would it really be so bad to have another colt around for his son to bond with. Yes, yes it would. This colt was older and could possibly not be friendly.

The quarter horse had been abandoned by his own father and then beaten by his adoptive father. He had quarreled with stallions for years, nearly a decade, and yet he was still wanting to approach the group. The stallion shook his head. If he was rude he would be unwanted anyway. Corr gnashed his teeth and turned his 16.1 hand frame back toward the group. He had to stop being so judgmental of horses he had never known. He took a calming breath and made his way toward the group. He walked to them with an easy stride and stopped a comfortable distance away. He knew he was an imposing figure with the scar across his eye and the amount of muscle his body held naturally. "Hello there. How are all of you doing today. My name is Corr."

CAEL;;

It's a rather rare occurrence, Cael in the homeless grounds. He hates this place, the palpable desperation that surrounds it and the trumped up stallions who prowl it. But Griffin's Wash is empty, and he is lonely. All of his children are gone, all of his mares have left. In his old age, Cael perhaps thought that Lunex would take over his home, would raise his own herd and carry on with what Cael had done for so many years. But the boy is young yet and seems to have no desire to settle. Cael doesn't blame him. Herds are a painful thing, as the fawn-colored stallion has learned so well over the years.

It's the heat of the day, with Prime high in the sky when Cael finally notices a mare. It isn't because she is necessarily the most stunning creature he's ever seen (no, that will forever be Alex, when she was minutes older than him at birth and already perfect, ordering him around and planning their lives) but she has two young equines with her, most likely her children. It gives Cael pause, because it is only in the worst of circumstances are mare with foal would need to venture from the safety of her homeland.

He hesitates in approaching her, because it is clear there is already another interested, but he cannot overcome his curiosity--and concern, when he notes the younger is a colt. Many would turn out a yearling, simply since it is not of their blood. Or others would feel threatened; Cael only feels a longing to have tumbling foals at his hooves again. It is with this thought that he moves to the mare. Stopping a respectable distance away, Cael glances to the blood red stallion--noting that, as always, he towers over even this male. Sometimes he hates his height. 17 hh tends to be intimidating, and he isn't thin, by any means. He is solidly built--built for battle, for survival, his mother would say. It has caused problems before.

His voice is soft and when he finally speaks, it is to the colt. There's a smile on his face as he says, "Hello. Are you keeping an eye on your mother? I'd imagine she feels much better, knowing she has you at her side to watch for anything amiss." Then he turns to the mare and the younger but still three filly, and extends his muzzle in a polite greeting. "Hello. I'm Cael."

Looking upward with her mahogany brown eyes, Lopa watched a stallion in the distance suspiciously. She tended to think of everyone as suspicious, always assuming the worst. After a moment of watching the group, the red sorrel stallion turned away and walked for a moment before pausing. Lopa continued to sip her cool, refreshing water but kept an eye on the stallion. Maybe he would be the first one to approach them.
She watched, not sure whether to be pleased or alarmed, when the stallion growled, turned around, and began approaching them. She looked over at her mother, who was also watching with curious eyes. Sayre sat down behind his mother and watched over her shoulder.

Liska was surprised when to see a stallion approach them so quickly. She got to her deep brown hooves and put a smile to her lips. He seemed to tower over her small 13.1 hand high frame. She never was very fond of other horses because of her difficult childhood, but she had changed a bit. Living in August's herd and having two children with him was more than enough to change her perspective of other equines. The stallion introduced himself as Corr. "I am very well, thank you Corr. It is nice to meet you. I am Liska." Her voice held a hidden sadness and a slight nip of coldness. The last time she was here, she met August. It seemed to her that no one else could compete with him.
Lopa already wasn't sure about the stallion, but that was frequently her reaction to new equines. "My name is Lopa, and that back there is Sayre," she said in a voice that was obviously unsure. The scar on Corr's eye led her into thinking that he was a stallion who knew nothing other than battle. They would probably be thrust right into a fight the moment they went to his herd. She knew that she wasn't fully sane upstairs, but she didn't tend to mind it unless she had a breakdown in anger or depression. In that case, it was a completely different story.

Liska was further surprised to see a second stallion approach soon after Corr. He looked even taller than the first stallion, who already towered over the pale Fjord. Unlike Corr, this washed-out dunskin stallion had an overo pattern accompanied by socks and a large blaze covering only one of his eyes. He came up and instead of talking to Liska, he turned to the young Sayre first. Liska's initial instinct was to ward off anyone who would try to talk to her son without her permission, but she knew that he was just trying to be sociable, so she bottled up her instincts for the moment.
Sayre peeked out from behind his mother's shoulder when seeing that the new stallion was talking to him instead of his mother. He smiled at the question that Cael, as he introduced himself as, asked. "Mm-hmm!" was all that the young, dun colt could squeak. He then went back to his spot behind his mother, just half of his small head peeking out from behind her shoulder.

"We're pleased to have you here, as well, Cael. My name is Liska, and my daughter is Lopa. Behind me now is Sayre," said Liska in the same kind of voice she spoke to Corr with and then waited for them to speak again.

Corr's chocolate eyes watched this new stallion move into the group and resisted the urge to pin his ears back and take a chunk from the stallion's hide. His manners weren't exactly perfect after spending the greater part of his life on his own. He had lost sight of his mother around the age of the colt the new stallion was addressing because of another stallion's fury. The memory flashed through his mind of his mother leaving him with the stallion he was supposed to call father. The stallion had taken him in his teeth and thrown him in the dirt. The beating he had taken had left him scarred, scared and nearly dead.

The mare spoke and Corr turned his head to look at her with his good eye. He was aware that the scar over his right eye could be intimidating and lead horses to judge him quickly. When he spoke his voice was softer than he thought it would be, considering how on edge he was. It contained a sort of sweetness to it that was usually reserved for his personal mares. "It is nice to meet you as well, miss Liska." Before he could say more her daughter spoke, introducing herself and her younger brother. "It is nice to meet you and your brother as well, miss Lopa." He was definitely on his best behavior and he didn't even know why. As the attention turned to Cael, Corr's thoughts wandered to that reason. Valora. She was gone again and not to the foaling grounds this time. She had simply vanished into thin air. The red stallion realized that he couldn't think about that right now and turned to the task at hand. He wanted his herd to grow and to do that he needed to bring someone to it. His eyes skimmed over Lopa before turning back to Liska. He waited for her to speak to him again.

CAEL;;

He's bad at this, bad at contrived social situations, at the enforced etiquette he never learned that goes along with the Homeless. He's still trying to get over how tiny the trio are; his own children were bigger as weanlings, and here he is, talking to a mare he looms over. It makes him self-conscious--it can't be comfortable for the mare to have been so immediately flanked by two stallions who stand so tall over her. Cael fidgets nervously, but remains in place and listens, gaze intent and ears pricked forward, as the mare and her daughter introduce themselves. The colt answers him skittishly, and then is diving behind his mother. Cael laughs at the antics, brown eyes lighting with his happiness. It's been too long since he's had foals to interact with.

The stallion who first arrived is the first to break the momentary silence, and Cael is more than happy to. He feels out of place, trying to flirt a mare back to his herd; but Cael is lonely, and so here he is. As the other stallion speaks, Cael regards him curiously, ears pricked forward and a polite, empty look on his face. Humming quietly, Cael waits his turn and when he does speak, it is softly again. "Liska, Lopa, Sayre." He nods to each in turn, winking at the still-shy colt and smiling kindly to the mare. All manner of questions are plaguing him--why would this mare leave? Is her stallion dead, or has he kicked her out perhaps? What reason could she have for taking her children and going? But he does know enough of social niceties to bottle all of these away and instead murmur, "It's a pleasure to meet you all. As I said, my name is Cael, and I hail from Griffin's Wash." The taste of his new land is still foreign and bitter on his tongue; he misses Marquiessa's Cove fiercely, every minute of every day, but knows returning would only send him spiraling into the terrible memories contained within.

Realizing he never caught a name for the other male, Cael looks to him and speaks. Hoping his disdain doesn't show, he adds, "And it is good to meet you as well, I suppose. I didn't catch your name, stranger. "

ooc; blech sorry

Liska listened to both of the stallions speak, and she nodded respectively to each of them. Corr's voice was soft and gentle, as was Cael's. Not yet had she warmed up to either of the stallions, but at least they were not harsh to her or her offspring. If ever they were, they wouldn't be getting Liska's kind side anymore. When Cael spoke to Corr, she could hear the scorn in his voice, even though it sounded like he was trying to cover it. She didn't say anything about it, though.

Lopa did her best to keep a stoic, unexpressive look on, though inside, her stomach churned at being so close to the two strangers. The size of Cael and the scar over Corr's face worried her. Every word they said, Lopa stretched and twisted around until they meant something completely different. For all she knew, they were plotting something against the trio.
Sayre smiled shyly back at Cael, still hiding behind his mother. He liked the extra attention he got from the 17 hand high stallion, but he was often too shy as a foal to reply.

"It's very nice to have both of you here," Liska said quietly. "What brings you two to the Homeless today?" Her voice still carried the hint of sorrow and a bitter nip of cold, even though she tried to mask it. She knew well why she was here. Why did August have to die? Why couldn't they have just lived happily ever after, her and her family? The thoughts, however they weren't new, still pained her a great deal. Never before had she thought that she would be able to find someone that she loved. And when she did, he had to go and die, leaving her and her family without a home, leaving her empty inside. She knew that Lopa grieved right along beside her, but certainly not as much. And Sayre? Well, he was very young when his father died, so it never really resonated with him.
She swallowed her emotions for the moment and forced a smile to come back to her face, waiting the stallions' reply.

ooc: Sorry if the post is a little bit odd. Couldn't think straight. :P

Corr kept an eye on the stallion calling himself Cael. He wasn't openly staring of course. He knew that much. The more the stallion watched the more he decided that Cael might be quite a bit like him. A part of him wanted to keep the mean streak he reserved for stallions prominent, but another part wanted to hide it deep inside. It had only caused him trouble. His upbringing had, well never really happened. He had never had a role model like a father to watch. The stallion spoke to Corr and the stallion could hear the harshness in Cael's voice. Corr's ears momentarily pinned, but he pushed them forward again. When Corr spoke he tried to keep the bite from his voice. "I am called Corr. Other stallions can be hard to associate with these days, but I suppose it is nice to meet you too."

There was only a small gap of silence before Liska spoke to both he and Cael. The red stallion noted that there was a coldness in the mare's voice. She was not happy to be here, though no one was ever happy to be in the homeless it seemed. Some event had happened to the trio for them to be here at all. I'm here today looking for mares to add to my herd. I am also here looking for one of my mares who has been missing." He hoped that his voice didn't sound cold. If it did he hadn't meant it to. Valora's absence was getting to him once again. The stallion decided to turn the attention away from him self a little bit by looking at Cael exectantly.

ooc; Since this topic has been going on for a while and doesn't look like it's going to end soon, I have decided that the trio is going to go with Corr. :)
