WELL SWEET MOTHER TERESA ON THE HOOD OF A MERCEDES BENZ
|
![]() It has been a testing time for her. Sileo’s herd has grown immensely since the time she conceived, and although Lena normally never has trouble guiding the others around, she has found pregnancy tiring and it slowed her down. Nevertheless, she hid her disgruntled feelings as best she could and got on with her job. She half expected for one of the other mares to rise up against her, particularly since she has been so laden with foal and would not be able to fight, but none have done so. Apart from the influx of foals to the herd, it seems that everyone is happy as they are, for the time being. Although Lena knows her time will not last forever, she is not too old yet, and would like to continue to be Sileo’s second in command and bear him more foals until her body is too tired for it all. It is the life she has waited for, and she is going to enjoy every minute of it. She departed from Rich Water a few days ago, having felt her unborn child drop to the very back of her womb and instinctively knew her time was soon coming. She is glad she chose not to leave late, as she arrived in the Foaling Quarry a few hours ago and has much appreciated the very act of resting before the first contractions began. The pain is not unbearable, but has become more and more irritating as time has gone on. Her old paranoia of being half deaf is prominent, and although the red roan has chosen a spot almost never visited by other expectant mothers, she is still anxious for the foal to be born. She spends a lot of time getting up and down off the ground, and cannot concentrate on her surroundings with the increasing pain in her barrel. As she is unable to hear properly normally, this is all the more stressful. The final twenty minutes is the worst. Lena is confined to the ground, and spends most of it lying flat on her side trying to push the foal out. Her stomach is huge and swollen, flapping with each breath as her child gets ever close to arriving whilst her legs are stuck out at odd angles, spindly in comparison. Something soon gives, and the weight of the foal is relieved from her. Her stomach still bears that dull ache, but the worst is over. Lena barely has time to recover herself when she hears the faint squeaks of a newborn foal. She cranes her head round, her good ear strains to hear her child’s call. On impulse she clamours to her weary feet, hurrying round the mess that is her new foal. Foaling is not a tidy business, but after she has cleaned her child up, the outcome is wonderful. The tiny filly turns her golden head towards her mother, bleating furiously and strains with her gangly legs to stand. Already she sports a stockier frame, and like her father her coat is beautifully curled. Soon she is on her feet and nursing, the soft wickers from her mother giving her a soothing atmosphere. Lena is pleased. She does not care for continuing her line through colts, she has no desire to maintain her bloodline into Sileo’s favour, but a filly would be a lot of fun. It appears the family knack of throwing fillies continues. |
