Papillon had heard that pregnancy did strange things to a mare's emotions, especially in the later stages when maternal instinct warred with the natural discomfort of heavy pregnancy. And perhaps her varied mood swings were worsened by her near constant worry and fear of being alone, but regardless, she felt like a stranger to herself these days. A stranger that adored being pregnant and eagerly awaited the birth of her first child, but one that was terrified of this needy, sucking creature that stole half of every bite she took and threatened her very life. She feared that she would give birth to something she was not prepared for, or worse, give birth to a healthy baby only to lose it to a late pregnancy or exposure or injury. What if she could not protect it by herself? After nearly a year of wandering and fierce disappointment, she was at a loss for what to do next. She could not remember the name of Relic's herd, nor its location, only his kind, sweet face and the gentle touch of his muzzle on her skin. She feared, in tandem with everything else, that he would resent her for staying away despite her frantic attempts to return to him. That their foal would grow up not knowing it's mother because she was incapable of living on her own. Her general fear amplified and anxiety that Papillon has never before felt. Her world generally exists in rosy and warm colors and this strange new world of icy blue terror is foreign territory to her; Papi does not know how to navigate a winter in the soul and she feels lost and adrift. Self-doubts magnify in this half life and she spends most days in a haze of fright. Only this day is different. This day she cannot put off any longer and she can feel something building in her body that makes her want to nest and burrow and hide. Thankfully, due to her lack of other choices, Papillon has made her way to the Quarry well in advance and does not need to hurry to find a proper spot. Thankfully, despite it's advanced and overdue state, her first birth is as smooth as one could make it. Her emotions well up and trip overthemselves in a flurry of happy, sad, scared tears that drip steadily down her face and congesting her nose even as she probes the tiny foal that she has breathed life into. He bleats, leans into her, soaks up the attention she has desired nothing more than to lavish upon him. He helps her with her fright, that and the exhaustion that follows his introduction, and she falls asleep that night happy for the first time in months. As her blue eyes shutter closed, she whispers something, moreso a contented and hopefull farewell to the dark times she has just passed through than anything, but come morning time, it has become his name. "Adieu." |
