WELL SWEET MOTHER TERESA ON THE HOOD OF A MERCEDES BENZ

you make me feel out of my element, like i'm walking on broken glass
The Arabian hybrid had rushed off to the Foaling quarry, desperate to get there before the foal was born. In true style, Avril had not judged the extra time it would take her to travel to the common grounds, now she was heavy with foal and unable to go very fast over long distances, and therefore had been running behind schedule. Luckily for her the foal had not arrived when she did in the Quarry, but as soon as she had found somewhere to settle and rest, the first few pangs had rippled through the mare’s swollen barrel. It was mid-spring, and blossom trees covered the mare’s hiding spot under cherry blossom. A stream was also near her, should she suddenly feel the need to drink. The mare snorted in discomfort, her nose turning to her belly several times to nudge at the pain.

Avril lay flat out on her back, with her ebony tail fanned out, her legs stuck out at awkward angles due to the size of her stomach. No better. She tried rolling, lying on her other side, standing and walking, but the pangs of discomfort just kept rolling on, now in faster and closer together tides. Soon the bay mare was forced to lay down, her legs shaking from both pain and nerves. The foal had dropped a while ago, and was now quickly on it’s way out. It seemed like a lot of waiting around, before the Arabian felt a sudden change into tempo and her body naturally seemed to know what to do. Allowing herself to go with her instincts, the mare laboured and strained until she felt something give, and the foal slipped from her. The bay female flung her head back down to the ground, her mahogany coat layered in sweat as she panted, trying to regain her breath. Never before had something been so painful.

After a moment, she recovered her breath, and slowly raised her head. Something pale and slimy basked by her hooves, squeaked from time to time as it blearily looked round itself, before craning it’s small neck towards her. Avril blinked, ears perking forwards in confusion. The foal itself looked healthy enough, except that it was the most brilliant white she had ever seen. Other than the occasional flecks of chestnut, which she found as she groomed the foal, it was completely alabaster. How two bay horses had produced something so pale was remarkable, although Avril began to worry. She hoped it’s red specklings had saved the foal from being a lethal white. The foal’s scent was feminine and luxurious. The mare sighed, inhaling the filly’s now clean mane, before she got slowly to her feet.

The filly, who Avril had prematurely dubbed Pearl, squawked and struggled, indignant that she be left behind. With much practise, she slowly got to her feet, taking her first wobbly steps over to her dam before she began to nurse. Although the bay mare was still a little worried, these first few steps were encouraging. She nuzzled the filly’s back once more, just content that the whole ordeal was over.
